    Everyone needs to realize that drag dramatically increases between 55 and 70, much less 80! 26 mpg at 80 is pretty darn good for a pickup, which is as aerodynamic as a brick.

    At 27 minutes in, when the fuel economy dropped, it was probably in regen mode. 26 mpg at 80 mph is awesome in a pickup truck. 80 mph it is sitting right on its 369 ft. pound torque peak. Thing probably never has to shift down. Nice!

    Took a 300 mile trip this weekend. A little bit of city driving (maybe 15 miles) and I averaged 33.3 MPG. It's quiet and smooth which made for a nice drive. Got Llumar tint all around (including AB80 on the windshield) so I'm all set for the Florida heat.

    Just found your channel and like your style. Relaxed and not trying to impress anyone. living in Seattle the start to your challenge gave me that "right at home" feeling with the heavy traffic.
    Looking forward to watching more of your material. Excellent work reporting the accident too! The ending just blew my mind, I scarfed down 3 tacos while I was watching this and at the end of your video you say "Lets go get some tacos!"

    Hi Bryan .... fun to go on another road trip with your cameras .... as I don't really know much about Texas and its highways, although years ago we drove from Colorado to South Padre Island. I distinctly remember all the amazing purple flowers blooming in May at that time. Two quick thoughts; (1) I always bring my own windshield cleaner and scour pad for bugs on windshield.... this works out great on road trips. Nice to see all the surrounding beauty instead of bug splatter..plus its good to get out and stretch the legs on long trips.(2) Never used OnStar..but seems stupid to add another layer between you and 911 operator...looks like it would be best to simply dial 911 yourself. We're heading out on a fall road trip to Santa Fe tomorrow with the Audi Q5 TDi ... still love this car. cheers and keep up the good work. BW

      Enjoy your road trip! I use P21 windshield washer boost on my personal cars, followed by Stoner's Invisible Glass. A scour pad and elbow grease is not necessary. Enjoy your trip!

    Absolutely right about the step rails on this truck. If you are 5 ft tall or less, the step rails might help you. But average height people will struggle to get in over them without using them, or use them and have to come way down from them to sit down. It's a bit ridiculous. If you're 6 ft+ tall you can just slide in without them.

    I was really interested in this truck when it first came out and considered selling my '07 f150 for it. I loved my Rangers in the past but the size and mileage of my f150 is impractical for everyday driving. Instead I got '16 Chevy Spark. The price is peanuts, it drives great, and I average 41mpg. When you need a truck the F150 is better qualified in just about every way and the other 90% of the time the spark is saving me $ ($27K extra play money), fun to drive, parks anywhere. Yes, I get stuck with two insured cars and two plates a year but when a car breaks down in the family its nice to have a spare vehicle.

    • @TheMrbeasely
      @TheMrbeasely 8 років тому

      The F150 is better qualified in just about every way and the other 90% of the time..."? First, what does that even mean? In every way and also 90% of the time? Lots of facts there. Hmm. the Chevy Colorado won Motor Trend truck of the year in 2015 and 2016... "Chevy Colorado" must have been a typo in those issues and they meant to write "Ford F150".

    • @spyder000069
      @spyder000069 8 років тому

      That means that for a good portion of the people that are truck owners only need the utility of a truck a small portion of the time. When I get groceries I don't need the truck. I don't need it to take my family out to dinner. I don't need it to get back and forth to work. For many the every day tasks don't require a truck. This of course excludes farmers, people of the construction trade and such. However, I still needed a truck to tow my offroad vehicle, my trailer with the family dirt bikes, my trailer with my tractor, getting landscaping materials, and such. So while you need the utility its tough to pay for the mileage/maintenance penalty as an everyday driver. I am sorry but winning the truck of the year means nothing in this comparison which is based on use. As a owner of many trucks in my lifetime my real life experience is this. You can put more in the bed of the f150. I can put 6 people in my f150 which has come in handy many times. Towing is much safer with the larger truck. I have towed my trailer and offroad rig with a midsize pickup and I can tell you even with double axle brakes the pucker factory when someone pulls out in front of you is more than double in a smaller truck. The larger truck is much more stable towing in windy conditions. I had to pull my wife out a ditch in the winter and a smaller lighter truck would not have done it but the wider track and heavier weight (with about 600lbs of added sand in the bed) pulled her suv out. I have pulled out bushes roots and all without making a mess of the yard. Pulled the UPS guy out of the snow drifts. The point being when you need a truck to do work then size, weight, and capacity matter. However, a midsize truck I only see as a convenience for parking. The mileage between them and the full size in gas engines is not enough to offset the loss in utility. Getting better gas mileage in a diesel also doesn't do it because of the additional initial investment in the diesel upgrade. So where does this vehicle make sense? I am glad it has been released as I believe diesel engines in the mainstream market do need to be explored. The efficiency can be there. However for me there is not enough value and utility in this truck to entice me to switch yet.

    I thoroughly enjoyed this review! As I am seriously considering the Chevy Colorado Diesel Z71 as my next vehicle, this review was very helpful. I would like to know what your total average speed for the trip was as you seemed a little disappointed by the 25.8 mpg average and yet, I find that pretty darn good for a medium truck with which seemed to be a 75-80 mph average highway speed for the duration of your trip (except for traffic and accident). I live in a state where the fastest posted speed limit is 65 mph. Do you think the faster speed impacted your mpg negatively?

    • @DieselDrives
      @DieselDrives  8 років тому

      +Jan Dmytrach Thanks for watching. I also drove the GMC Canyon, which rode differently due to the longer bed. The long bed might have given the GMC a fuel economy advantage. I am not sure about average speed because that's one thing the trip computer did not display on both trucks. However, the fuel economy would be better at the 65 mph speed limit because the truck's sweet spot (in either bed configuration) is somewhere around 70 mph. In an 80 mph zone, 70 mph on cruise is just too slow for me, as some big rigs are limited electronically to 70 mph. When you cruise at 70 mph in an 80 zone, you'll burn more fuel to pass trucks if you don't pass swiftly. If you are in a 65 zone, you'll fare better mpgs overall. Both trucks have passing power, but not at the entire speed range. Passing a truck from 60+ mph causing speed is easier than from 35+ mph cruising speed. Keeping momentum and doing your own pace is key to high mpgs in a diesel. Thanks for watching!

    good video. fuel economy really has me considering this truck. one ? at the end you put over 22 gallons but capacity is 21 gallons. did it hold more since you filled it to the top of the filler neck?

    • @DieselDrives
      @DieselDrives  8 років тому

      +Jason Brown Thanks for watching and good question. I fill to the top of the filler neck before and after each trip so that there is a sight on the fuel level, rather than using the fuel pump shut off valve it vehicle fuel level sensor because results may vary. With sight, you and I know the tank is full. Of course, fuel economy numbers will be different because the computer can't calculate anything beyond a full tank, so whatever the fuel filler neck capacity is will not be reflected in the computer's calculations.

    I wonder if the Z71 package may have lowered the MPG. I know when I put AT tires on my 4x4 the increased weight of the tires made a big difference. went from 15mpg to about 12mpg around town. and HWY went from 18 to 15.
    also was surprised the shorter wheelbase drive better, usually the longer the wheelbase the better.
    again could be that z71. softer shocks I think
    anyway great review as always.

      I am right there with you! Got a 2012 TDI, that's located out of state (Military) and keeping it registered is unbelievably difficult. I've been considering a mid-size truck as a replacement, but mileage and range generally sucks. I love the range on the TDI and would hate to lose that in a future vehicle... so this Colorado is what I'm looking at when I let VW buy the TDI back in a few weeks.

      +Caleb Hill The two midsize diesel GM trucks I drove were $42k. There is still the BMW 328d and the new Jaguar XE diesel are available and start around $39-$42k. MPGs are comparable to the VW and you don't need a truck to get a diesel. There is also the Jaguar F-Pace SUV which is available with a diesel starting at about $42k.

  • @williamdavidson539
    @williamdavidson539 8 років тому

    Biggest thing decreasing MPG was going 80 mpg. That's a lot of air resistance. My Silverado after many mods can get 28 instant MPG at 55 MPH but at 80 it only gets 16 you have to realize where the top gearing is and the fact that once you reach your top cruising gear at approx 45MPH for most vehicles you loose MPG as you accelerate. That is why hyper milers don't go over 45.

    • @DieselDrives
      @DieselDrives  8 років тому

      +William Davidson I think the standard bed size creates resistance. I had better results in the long bed GMC Canyon.

    • @williamdavidson539
      @williamdavidson539 8 років тому +1

      +Diesel Review it is very possible the longer bed creates better aerodynamics in some way especially if you drove both at similar speeds for similar times. Another difference would come from how much traffic and construction you encountered. The Canyon and Colorado both seem to be great vehicles and I would love to have either vehicle but I would like to see a review of speeds around 55-70 to see what kind of difference there is from the review you did. I enjoyed your review very much and I have to give mad props to you for stopping for that accident we are a rare breed not a lot of people stop.

    • @williamdavidson539
      @williamdavidson539 8 років тому

      +William Davidson also could not find where you said how hot it was outside in the other review it is possible since it was April (at least that is when you posted the video) the air conditioner did not have to run as hard in the Canyon. Way to many factors play into fuel economy to give a definitive answer. I have seen videos of people getting 20MPG and 40MPH in the Colorado it all comes down to the driver, road conditions, weather, speed, model, and accessories used. Keep these reviews coming!!!

    When running empty you can drop your tailgate to increase fuel efficiency or get a cap for the bed. The tailgate is like a big sail dragging you back at highway speeds. Running around at city speed doesn't matter but the faster you go the more the tailgate influences your mileage. This is why you see some trucks with a net instead of a tailgate.

    Crazy question: what would you buy to to a 7000 boat & trailer? Choice is between 2017 Audi Q7 and chevy Colorado diesel. I have a Q7 on order. Thanks!

    • @DieselDrives
      @DieselDrives  7 років тому

      +Jack Martin That is a crazy question! I like Sea Bass and I've never had catfish. You can't go wrong with the supercharged V6 in the Q7. The Colorado Duramax diesel does have 369 lb-ft of torque, so it will be slower and smaller than a Q7. However, I did have a 2017 Colorado V6 over Christmas and I'd call that the Audi of trucks. The only problem with the Colorado and Canyon trucks is that they are foiled by speed bumps. You can't beat them for resale value, either.

    Of course your gas mileage is going to go down when cruising at 80 mph...Drive the same route at 70 mph and you'll notice an increase in your gas mileage. At higher speeds your vehicle encounters more wind resistance and the tires encounter more rolling resistance.

      +opjoipopikopp[pl[p[ It was filled to the brim, so that means the tank capacity does not include the volumes between the top of the fuel tank to the fuel filler neck.

    No manual transmission option, i won't buy it.

      The automatic is strong and smooth. I'd imagine a manual would make it difficult to tow a 7,700Lb load effectively.

      +Diesel Review I've used both and I still prefer a manual because of the ability to apply full power without the transmission downshifting on you. I do agree with you though that the automatic transmission is probably just as good as the manual in practice I just personally prefer a manual and Towing.

      Comes on the base model, but you only get it with the in-line 4 engine.

      The trucks have a manual mode on the shifter you can use.

      +heavy379 Yeah, auto wipers and headlights are nothing special these days. I was cranky and waiting for my coffee, so that's as real as it gets.
