The Kegelstatt Trio, K. 498, is a piano trio for clarinet, viola and piano in E-flat major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Composed in 1786, 125 years before this work by Bruch.

Just whoa! Fun fact, the first time that this piece of art was released on an album was back in 1975 performed by Mr. Rudolf Irmisch. The album was never issued to the public though. Richard Gilbert, who ran the Grenadilla Records, got the tapes from an eastern European source and pressed about 1000 copies. He sent a few advance copies to subscribers, reviewers and libraries, but then he couldn't clear the copyright permissions and had to destroy the entire run. There might be somewhere less than an about 100 copies in existence. So glad and grateful that this is here right now so a larger group of people can experience this masterpiece without the need to pay a crazy amount of money for it. Thank you so much for this!
I'm beginning to think Max Bruch is the 19th century Gustav Holst, in the sense that he is too well known for just one work, when there are so many other masterpieces that deserve to be equally popular.
Viola is closest to the human tonal range in the orchestra and the clarinet is as well in the winds. No wonder they compliment and flow together so well!

The maturity of Brahms orchestration and blending of solo voices is incredible. Wonderful rendition as well. Carefully listening to this reveals new subtleties each time I listen. Don't just listen to this one as background music...really listen and you will be given a gift.
After the introduction, the main theme (from bars 17 to 28 or from 1:07 to 1:56) of the 1st movement, is more than just a paraphrase of Edvard Grieg's Solveig's Song from the Peer Gynt suite. I am in love with this concerto... What a shame it's not a Bb clarinet... I'm a clarinetist and tried to study the viola but it was too tricky... Anyway one of my dreams is to play this one day with a fellow viola player :) (along with Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances)

I will continue to listen to Bruch, may be he can be one of my favorites like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Scarlatti. By the way, the two soloists were superb as well. Thanks for uploading.
it's truly unfortunate that this work also has the scrolling sheet music posted. I REALLY enjoy listening to it while reading or studying, and with the sheet music, I can't read or study anything but the sheet music while listening to the music. There MUST be a conspiracy theory I can make here... :)
bckm54 I feel it. As much as I want to study for Form and Analysis, I'm too busy analyzing the music on the screen for this piece. I'm currently learning Bruch Romanze for Viola so this popped up in my Playlist. I have a friend that is a great clarinetist, definitely will bring this piece up to him.
How patronising the comment by Paul Bunyan is. It's by no means a little piece, and in its own way, very original (not least on the choice of instruments). Stravinsky's own neoclassical period, which was very extended, is one piece of evidence to back up the point that Bartje makes.
Bruch was already outdated when he landed his only real hit: The 1st Violinconcerto. He refused to go further than Mendelssohn did in harmony 20 years before him. Not to say that his music isn't nicely crafted, it is just outdone by his contemporaries. Just consider: His last work, the Octett for Strings was written in the same year as Bartok wrote "The miraculous Mandarin". They sound like they are 100 years apart.
Why, Max? When you were such a great composer, why steal from Grieg? I know composers of all genres of music at all times has done this, but it's still disappointing, and this one is very blatant.
who cares, it is a gorgeous and very original piece. Show me anyone else who chose this combination, let alone brought off to such good effect. I love Grieg, by the way, especially his violin sonata in G.

Similar to the Brahms trio.... the interplay between clarinet, cello, and piano is outstanding especially in the slow movement

Mozart may have been the 1st to do that in his Trio, K.498, though the colours of the orchestra add so much to the Bruch.

So nice to hear this with clarinet rather than violin, the usual substitute. Bruch, as usual, crafted the piece wonderfully.
This is fabulous. I've never really exposed myself to the lesser-known artists of the Romantic period, but this is proof that I should.
True, Bruch's major works, at least, are often performed. That said, I never heard of this concerto before....BRAVI!
