- This episode captures the moment when all of the audio wiring is finally done! I then do a more complete walk through of the entire wiring/connectivity concept for the studio!
This place is going to be epic!! I hope the electronic gear is covered when the trades are in there. I recently moved practice spaces when the rooms weren't done and dust was over all my gear. Anyway, if ya ever need anyone for grunt work, i'm in mass and would love to just soak up and knowledge whilst grunting!
I’m a builder, my advice is avoid drywall completely, it’s got a sound and it’s not good. Better to use tongue and groove timber then use treatments to dull the room. Drywall sounds like cardboard. It’s so bad

When you say “finished tape machine recording” are you talking about just going through the tape machines preamps and back into the DAW?

Those little 500 series pultecs with the 2520s are great - totally different from the tube ones, but awesome. Also +100 on all the redco stuff! I love their modular approach to panels and boxes, and those little mult adapters are the shit - so convenient.
Excellent job so far and you’re showing how important it is to get the M&E and audio working perfectly before closing up any walls. 👏

My first thought too. Generally conversion from HDMi>SDI and Vice versa can float anywhere between a few frames and over a second depending on the converters. In one prompter rig at work where we have Hdmi feeding sdi and then reconvert to HDMI we see about 300ms reliably. and it gets worse if we introduce any routers and video switches.
Hey Eric! Love your video's and always been a big fan of your productions. I'm really inspired by your workflow of going mic pre>computer>eq/compression/tape etc>computer, capturing also the direct mic pre signals. I'm running a mainly analog studio called ''Far Out Sound'' and been doing a lot of hybrid recording/mixing these days, trying to get most of the sounds on the way in summed/eq'd/compressed to a MCI JH24, through the tape straight in the computer. Really makes mixing way easier! I had to turn down the repro levels of the MCI to not clip the converters, as i'm often slamming the shit out of the tapemachine's inputs. I wonder how you did that, or are you always going through extra line amps in between the tapemachine and the converters? Also, what is your opinion about using tape alot over and over again? I got a bunch of 2'' tapes, probably did at least more then 15 projects on each of them, and to my ears they keep on sounding good (as long as i calibrate the machine). Do you notice any degradation after using 2 inch tapes (tape in general) alot of times? Thanks man! Dig the video's dude! And building a barn studio, has also always been my dream. Is everything coming back out before walls go in? I’m super concerned about all the dust you are about to encounter, and even covered or wrapped, I’m concerned.

I wish there was a website dedicated to cable/cable snake trade. We all have the buckets of the dead and unused, we all have the snakes that just need one of the ends to terminate differently.
I think I look forward to this series more than any other UA-cam subscription...we've been using our facility in a limited way, but only the first phase has been finished (entrance, mechanical, washroom, breakroom, and control room...with a cavernous open space in the back where the vocal booths and main room will be built...I've put some cat6 in already thinking I was being "forward thinking" but now from watching your series of videos I'm realizing that I need to add a ton more connectivity...and thankfully I haven't buttoned up that area yet, so I can still get to everything in the walls...which is a huge relief! Thanks so much for being so willing to put all of this out here and it not being this "secret sauce" restricted thing! Now I'm getting really really excited to jump into the next two phases of our construction here!!!
This has to be the most epic studio build of all time. Really incredible to watch, and you have a million little things in there to learn from. Just a big thanks there.
Question 1 - the SSL Sigma Delta, do you anticipate using that a lot, and also, how do you like it, and what do you hear it do?
Question 2 - the tape machines in tracking, do you just run them and watch the tape length, then stop and rewind and start tracking again on the same tape?
It's interesting that you have a Scully machine. I don't know if you know this, but Bob Berliner, the guy who started Redco, was the local Scully guy in NY for years. And the Scully company was in Bridgeport, CT, very close to where Redco is now. I had a 1/2" Scully 2-tk for a while and Bob gave me a box of parts that kept me going for a long time.

Just curious why you would go from the pres in to the converters and then back out of the converters to the outboard gear instead of multing from the patchbay? (love the videos, thank you!!)

@@matthewbrabender1421 Yep. same question here, was also thinking that multing the preamp outs would be a good solution to avoid an AD/DA conversion and achieve a similar goal.
Hi Eric, RCA tube console - did you rebuild the power supply or replace it with something more modern? I'm told the massive boat anchor I have for my Collins tube mixer could be replaced with something a quarter of the size and weight. Any advice on that? thanks!
In your description of the patch bay routing you are evidently placing EQ before Compression which then feeds the tape machines. Is it best to handle dynamics after equalization or it just personal preference? My current setup puts Stereo Mic Pre's into Gates/Compression then into 2 Parametric EQ's and then to the PC sound card inputs but I will gladly change this if its not best practice. I appreciate any advice you can provide. Thanks!

I’m very much looking forward to learning more about the acoustic design of the control room and live room. Question? Why did you go with a more diy approach rather than hiring an acoustical studio designer to design it? Was it more that you wanted to tackle it yourself or financial? Basically why did you do it instead of getting someone like Northward Acoustics or someone like them build you one of their rooms?
I've been wondering about that SSL Sigma. Since it's now discontinued, are you worried that it will be unable to work or be serviced in the future? The plugins to control it are only a future Pro Tools or OS update away from potentially not working anymore and then there's the hardware aspect that could fail as well. It looks great and has every feature I could want but I don't want it to be a brick in a few short months lol
If I understood correctly, you will be driving tape with eq or compressor output gain? And DAW output fader if not using outboard?
Or was it that Sigma is somewhere in between those stages? Just wondering from recall standpoint..

The building is so good with it's big spaces. They say double sheet rock with a small space and dabs of that flexible adhesive is good to stop a lot of sound. Bass frequency is a lot more difficult. I am thinking why try to stop sound when you don't need to. Your floor can be deadened a bit with carpets if you need. Guess you know all what I can say. UK lad here of over 60

Love this! I consider you an incredibly confident record maker so I’m surprised at your interest in the safety net of the raw straight off the mic pre signals. Is this mainly a bonus from a latency free, pre-Tape monitoring signal for artists?
Is the lag on HDMI not too big for visual feedback during recording? We’re looking at an SDI system in our facility instead as that should be a lot faster.

Of all the mixes you’ve worked on, is there one in particular that still has the greatest emotional resonance with you? One that still moves you the most when listening back?
Do you have a central grounding strategy?
Is that an SSL Sigma in the rack? Is that something you've been using or something you plan on using?

Love your videos Eric, learning so much. Quick question, I don’t know the answer that’s why I’m asking, but would the sound quality be better if you split the signal out of the preamp and have one the second signal straight to eq/compressor/tape versus having a converted signal? Thanks
In one of his other videos he tested that by running a signal through conversion 20 or so times and he said he couldn’t hear a difference.
Maybe I’m missing something but: I’m I correct in understanding you will capture both the raw signal (after preamp) and hardware processed versions (after eq / comp) in Pro Tools? So essentially double the amount of tracks in your sessions?
Wouldn’t it make more sense to just record the raw signal and just monitor with hardware inserts engaged in Pro Tools? That way you can still get the sound / vibe while tracking and just commit to any hardware processing later.
I think he's trying to commit to a sound/analog chain while recording and in most cases have that be version that gets mixed further/is on the record, to save time from having to do that again later, and nail that sound on the day of recording. But there's a backup in case anything goes wrong. I think his workflow is he wants analog outboard in the final album tracks and wants to capture that on the day of recording, but have a backup in case something turns later that needs to go again through the outboard chain.
