Thank you for the detailed breakdown. Just to confirm my takeaways: (1) I need to have some Nepalese Rupees before flying out to pay for the visa on arrival. (2) The medical coverage period should be longer than the actual trip in the event of getting sick at the end of the trip. Thanks again!
Good afternoon, Mark! It's such a pleasure to hear from you; thank you so much for watching! ❤ You are very close. 1) You can pay for the visa on arrival in your home currency; they pretty much accept any common currency for that. For me, I paid in U.S.D., but there was a long list posted of all of the currencies that they accept. You'll just need cash as they won't accept credit or debit. I didn't see an ATM once I got to customs, so it's probably best to have cash before you arrive into the country. 2) For the medical coverage, you'll just want to purchase a plan that very clearly states that it will cover you at the altitude that you are trekking to. The policy I found did not give any kind of altitude limitations until they sent the 60 page policy packet after I had already started my trek and reached over the altitude they would cover, so they denied covering all of my medical expenses. Usually the policy period is sold by the month, but mine was sold per day. You have a great idea of covering yourself for a bit longer -- just in case you get stuck there, but what's really important is that your policy doesn't have a provision that denies coverage is you exceed a certain altitude. I really hope this helps, and thank you so much for being such a wonderful subscriber! 🤩
Really fascinating, as each of your videos have been. In 2001 it was a very cheap trek done solo. I had lots of time and walked in from Jiri. This really helped with acclimatization, and there were some cool places along the way. It got more expensive for sure as you went upside. Cheapest night was 70 Rupees for bed, a dhal bhat and a big flask of chang. What amazed me is that it's still a relatively cheap trek. Great advice on the travel insurance. I went on to teach in Cambodia for 12 years and skimping on insurance is highly inadvisable, especially in under-developed countries. Solo trekking rules. Congratulations on doing this one alone - it's a toughie.

Hi did you do the ebc trek without a guide after april 2023? I have read online that, starting from april of this year, the nepalese government requires trekkers to hire a guide. I was wondering if it would be possible to do EBC without a guide or a porter. Thanks
Hi there! Thank you so much for writing; it's such a pleasure to hear from you. There's a lot of confusion around this - and that's totally understandable; I think many people are seeing or hearing about just one piece of legislation; however, that one piece was misunderstood and is taken in consideration of other legislation. There's a Trek Card that can be purchased that allows trekkers to legally trek solo, and you have great timing in asking because this upcoming Thursday, I have a video Premiering titled, "How I Legally Trekked Solo" that explains all of the laws that I used, the procedures that I followed, and all of the details about the costs and considerations of going solo. If you are interested, here's that link: ua-cam.com/video/NRy0lKQ44gk/v-deo.html
Myself personally I would not travel anywhere without travel insurance, if you needed to get carted off the mountain by helicopter, that would of cost you a lot more than the policy. I am going with a guide in November and they will not take you without insurance that covers you for the height of base camp for a helicopter flight. I take insurance for every trip I make.
