    The Klingon ship didn't react until they had already taken damage from the Starfleet ship---did the Astraea use the planet's magnetic field to mask their approach?

      @@longWriter

      Yes
      Yes they did.
      😅
      So to be fair I intended a longer, more even battle but was on a deadline and am still learning to do this, and the initial drop out of warp and firing was conceived off as happening a bit faster. The explanation in my head is that the Astraea is a new fast response ship and the Klingons weren't expecting anyone to show up this quickly, so they were doing what Klingons do and getting distracted by attacking the planet (honestly quite likely a bunch of them beaming down to the planet) leading to them being careless and a slow response from the bridge crew.
      But the Astraea masking it's approach does sound very in keeping for Trek 😅

      @@accastillo6046 yes! I had that thought! Having just taken a battering on the dorsal shields, it makes perfect sense to turn like that, both for the explosion and in case the Klingons got any more shots off.
      But I *definitely* didn't realise that whilst colour grading, and definitely didn't originally put in because it looked cool. 😅
      (You could probably justify the immelman under the same logic of not wanting to leave the damaged dorsal facing the enemy actually.)
      Why neither ship uses their aft torpedoes is a question best left unanswered 😅

      Can't remember if this is what I settled on in the end with the stated stats, but certainly roughly this.
      In overall terms she's bigger than you'd expect (those nacelles came out huge!), but the volume is noticeably smaller - I affectionately refer to her as a Pocket Connie 🤣 - the idea is the same general capabilities in a smaller space frame, sacrificing endurance for speed
      The scaling was a faff though because I modelled the saucer using a reference image that seems to be quite inaccurate:
      www.deviantart.com/fennius/art/Scale-Errors-1031145578
      Sonic I scaled the bridge to be the same size as intended then the ship ended up *huge*. So I ended up scaling more towards the deck sizes/saucer thickness iirc, which means the bridge module is a lot smaller than the Connie's (though I guess the bridge itself could be similar, and there's just less padding around it)
      Still, scale errors are traditional in Trek 😅

      The Ravenna is basically taking the Connie and making it more compact, sacrificing range and endurance for speed. Mid range exploration, fast response, colony support - it's got the punch of a Connie in a smaller package, and most of the space outside the saucer is engines, cargo bays, and space for auxiliary craft if needed. Higher top speed, but lower cruising speed, and supports iirc 2/3s the crew for more internal and border missions rather than the long term, five years in deep space ones.
      The J'Gein class I've not done any stats for, but I'm envisioning it as reasonably comparable to a K'Tinga, geared more towards long range deep strikes.

      I then ported them to Blender to texture, and do the animation, it's way more powerful and I should really learn to model in it too 😅
      I then ported THOSE results over to Davinci Resolve to edit the video and do all the post processing effects and such (I didn't use the composition node sin blender, they can give very good results but slow down the render a LOT and I was definitely going to be putting it in davinci anyway)
      All of its free software and I basically went scrounging for UA-cam tutorials for things I was doing, or just poked buttons until it did a thing I wanted (I do not know what half the controls do 😅)

    Hey, great work! You did an amazing job synthesizing the new with the old style and feel. Some of the ship and camera movements had a couple moments of stiffness in my opinion- maybe add some "stability noise" to some shots to help take some of those animations from great to amazing, and emulate the feel like there is a real camera being used, because the shots you've created are quite beautiful, particularly exit from warp. The coloring and composition are top notch. Looking forward to seeing what you create next!

      There's definitely a few moments of jankiness there (that haunt my dreams 😅), the big fix would mostly be improving my ship and camera motion in blender and play around with the curves and...controls and...twiddly knobs that do things 😅
      For stability noise do you mean a camera shake? It's an interesting idea, is that something I'd want for mimicking those older ILM shots? Genuine question!
      They were all motion controlled and I thought tended to be pretty smooth (or are you suggesting a really small one thats not super visible but tricks the eye into being real? Rather than BSG style shaky cam 🤣)

    Nice animation. But where were the shields on both ships. Every shot and torpedo seemed to directly impact the hull.

    • @RingandRaven
      @RingandRaven  Місяць тому

      @@gameoverinsertcointocontin8102 I was going for TOS movie era style hull hugging effects rather than TNG style bubbles - so the orange energy crackle on the Klingon ship and the blue one on the Astraea are the shields. You just get bleedthrough from the torpedoes because they're that strong.
      To be strictly accurate this effect isn't meant to be shields in Wrath of Khan as the shields are down any time anyone gets hit, though they do have energised defence screens, whatever that means.
      But the same sort of effect is used in Search for Spock and most notably Undiscovered Country for ships on all sides. Torpedoes leave scorch marks and notable damage, alongside energy crackles when the shields block most but not all of the blast. Excelsior has more of a big light ripple effect and fully tanks the hit, but it's implicitly got newer stronger shields. When a torpedo *fully* punches through the shields you don't get the crackle and instead it rips straight through the hull, which is whats intended at the end of this one (that and setting off a core breach, hence the extra big boom).
      There's actually a bit of consistency in modern Trek where Disco and SNW are using hull hugging effects not dissimilar.

    • @RingandRaven
      @RingandRaven  Місяць тому

      @@gameoverinsertcointocontin8102 it's very subtle as it's mostly hidden under the explosion, but if you look closely when the Astraea is hit you'll see the hull is illuminated by a blue glow as well as the orange of the fireball. (Which fades away quickly, leaving only the crackling energy over the damaged section) if I was redoing it I'd probably make it more distinct

    @patrickradcliffe3837 6 днів тому

    You really should use story boards and plan out the ships combat maneuvers and camera angles those first seconds of the initial engagement where the Klingons just slowly move along while getting pounded by phaser fire is really unrealistic. Really like the design of the Feddie ship, the bow of the Klingon cruiser seems way out proportion I think half to three quarters of the size would be better. I know you were going for a command and control ship vibe here.

    • @RingandRaven
      @RingandRaven  6 днів тому +1

      @@patrickradcliffe3837 less a planning issue and more a time/editing one. The slowness is mostly an attempt to get that movie era sailing ship vibe, but I'll acknowledge I probably should have edited that opening shot a little tighter, or had the Klingon ship show more reaction at first - it was planned to, and was going to be a longer fight as well with the klingons managing more than just one torpedo, but I was on a deadline for submission and had to cut sections of intended, which in turn makes the pacing a little more uneven - it was supposed to build to the slightly faster pace of the last shots rather than jump to it.
      For the Klingon ship it's modelled off John Eaves concept art, actually seemingly from the TNG era but since it was never used I backdated it. Disagree a little on the proportions though, I think if the bow was smaller the back would be too big, if it was simply narrower then you lose the defining feature and it just becomes a K'Tinga. I do think the back sections proportions aren't quite perfect though, a smidge bulky there.
