She's bigger than she looks, that saucer is most of the size of a Connie's, but yes it's a mid range explorer/fast response ship that's more compact than a Connie (honestly a bit like how the Miranda seems small but is bigger than people think in a direct comparison, I think possibly calced as having more internal volume even! )
The Klingon ship pulling an Immelmann turn was pretty cool. The Astraea turning her ventral shield to absorb the ship's explosion was a nice touch. Well Done.

Having just taken a battering on the dorsal shields, it makes perfect sense to turn like that, both for the explosion and in case the Klingons got any more shots off. But I *definitely* didn't realise that whilst colour grading, and definitely didn't originally put in because it looked cool. 😅 (You could probably justify the immelman under the same logic of not wanting to leave the damaged dorsal facing the enemy actually.) Why neither ship uses their aft torpedoes is a question best left unanswered 😅

I'm currently planning out a kitbash of a post TOS/Pre-TMP starship and didn't want to do a standard secondary hull. This half hull is exactly what I was looking for!! Thanks for the idea!

The half hull idea came about as I was doing initial layout of shapes and it didn't have any secondary at all at first - I wanted something close in to keep the sleeker profile and it suddenly popped into my head. I figure it's a more primitive version of the sort of ideas that eventually go into shops like Excelsior

In overall terms she's bigger than you'd expect (those nacelles came out huge!), but the volume is noticeably smaller - I affectionately refer to her as a Pocket Connie 🤣 - the idea is the same general capabilities in a smaller space frame, sacrificing endurance for speed The scaling was a faff though because I modelled the saucer using a reference image that seems to be quite inaccurate: www.deviantart.com/fennius/art/Scale-Errors-1031145578 Sonic I scaled the bridge to be the same size as intended then the ship ended up *huge*. So I ended up scaling more towards the deck sizes/saucer thickness iirc, which means the bridge module is a lot smaller than the Connie's (though I guess the bridge itself could be similar, and there's just less padding around it) Still, scale errors are traditional in Trek 😅

I loved it! I am always happy to see Klingons go boom. I have been a huge Romulan fan since the 70's. Could you make a film with them please? I would love to see some non-canon Romulan ships instead of the Bird-of-Prey. FASA had alot of cool designs, perhaps you could draw from them?
@@tb7771 I do actually want to do a Romulan ship, always liked them more than the klingons too! Had a couple of ideas for simple models but not made anything decent yet. Not a personal fan of the FASA aesthetic though. So eventually it's in the to do list! Howard Day has a short snippets with some movie era Romulans on his channel though, it's the level I aspire to!
Love the Warp effect. And That drop out of Warp was great! I hate modern Trek where the ships just "blip into existence" in a split second when drop out from warp. Your Warp version has a lot more majesty and dignity. That transition out of warp was absolutely great. I watched it numerous times. I enjoyed how you slowed down the ship quickly, but not TOO quickly. And you took a few seconds to transition from warp to normal speed. You treated the ships like large ships. You didn't treat them like jet Fighters (like modern Trek). Everything has weight in your version. Great job.

I was tempted to have it accelerate a little faster after the dropout, because of the urgency, but the slightly slower one gives more sense of mass. And I *hate* the blip/snap looks they're using these days for warp, it's just...utterly lacking in character

There's hard limits to what I know how to do in Blender but layering stuff up in post has worked pretty well (even if I see every glaring error 😅) I think I pulled the music from ....four different Trek movies? Just clicking through UA-cam playlists until I found pieces I thought matched the scenes (some bits extremely well, like the pull back shot from the klingon's that reveals the incoming Astraea - that ones all one piece, I just matched the moment it changed to the good guy theme to the Astraea's appearance and it worked quite well 😅 )
@@michaelcristel3060 they're supposed to be fusion engines iirc but I swear to god those things are magic 🤣 TBF I do want to reserve the big fancy glows for those moments of distinct acceleration. It keeps the general feel of the movies if they're not having huge flares all the time, I want to visually reserve it for special moments, and also it's a post VFX that I'm tracking in (by hand because I'm not very familiar with how to do it yet 😅)
The way I've heard it is that the impulse engines are magic reactionless machines while the glowing red parts are just the exhausts of the fusion reactors that power them. Should still flare at high thrust either way, though.

Higher top speed, but lower cruising speed, and supports iirc 2/3s the crew for more internal and border missions rather than the long term, five years in deep space ones. The J'Gein class I've not done any stats for, but I'm envisioning it as reasonably comparable to a K'Tinga, geared more towards long range deep strikes.
The Klingon ship didn't react until they had already taken damage from the Starfleet ship---did the Astraea use the planet's magnetic field to mask their approach?
@@longWriter .> Yes Yes they did. 😅 So to be fair I intended a longer, more even battle but was on a deadline and am still learning to do this, and the initial drop out of warp and firing was conceived off as happening a bit faster. The explanation in my head is that the Astraea is a new fast response ship and the Klingons weren't expecting anyone to show up this quickly, so they were doing what Klingons do and getting distracted by attacking the planet (honestly quite likely a bunch of them beaming down to the planet) leading to them being careless and a slow response from the bridge crew. But the Astraea masking it's approach does sound very in keeping for Trek 😅
@@jamezxh so being weird I modelled the ships in Wings 3D - it's not the most powerful but it's got an intuitive user interface I learned years ago, and I call it a comfort modeller I can just pick up and go. I then ported them to Blender to texture, and do the animation, it's way more powerful and I should really learn to model in it too 😅 I then ported THOSE results over to Davinci Resolve to edit the video and do all the post processing effects and such (I didn't use the composition node sin blender, they can give very good results but slow down the render a LOT and I was definitely going to be putting it in davinci anyway) All of its free software and I basically went scrounging for UA-cam tutorials for things I was doing, or just poked buttons until it did a thing I wanted (I do not know what half the controls do 😅)
@@thegooddoctor6719 oh god those jerky moments kill my soul 😭😅 and most of them would be super easy fixes if I went back into blender and re-rendered specific elements - the most obvious with the Astraea is harder to fix because of camera constraints, it would need fully redoing the motion and keyframing of the whole scene and it was doing my head in 🤣. But I was originally working to a November 1st deadline, and while I've more time now that got extended, I've also got stuff coming up and reached that point where you just need to finish a project and let the flaws stand or you drive yourself insane 🤣 (he said after pausing to retract explosions at 1:30 am because she spotted they weren't quite right just before he was going to upload😅) Thank you so much though!
That was pretty solid, I love how you nailed the TMP VFX. Only thing I have to point out is the camera movement, which could be smoother. But that's something I'm struggling with myself, so don't take this personally, I know how hard it is. Really nice work

Love the video, but you made it too easy for the Federation ship to win. If you do another video, the Klingon ship has to put up more of a fight! It really helps with tension and suspense.
