Aug. 5, 2019 | Sidney Madden -- Back in January, Dreamville, one of rap's most formidable artist-run labels, invited a broad selection of hip-hop artists and creators to Atlanta to create the label's third compilation album, Revenge of the Dreamers III - and with Bas being one of Dreamville's most reliable wordsmiths, he was, naturally, part of that momentous camp.
But, as he was smack dab in the middle of recording his verses for ROTD3, the rapper had to hop on a plane to Washington D.C. - he had a performance date he just couldn't pass up.
"Let's get it!," Bas exclaimed, after walking straight off the plane and into his Tiny Desk concert. With only a brisk run-through with his band and back-up vocalist, Mereba, the Paris-born, Queens-bred MC delivered an energetic and comical set to an office full of fiends (Bas' endearing term for his fans, which doubles as a clothing line.)
"My new neighbor's mad cool. So shout out to Peggy," Bas joked mid-set, clarifying that the lyrics in his song "Barack Obama Special," about hating his neighbors, were written in the past. "Peggy be picking up my mail when I'm on tour."
Just like his lyrically impressive and sometimes dance-inducing Tiny Desk - peep his headbanging and seated sambas throughout - Bas always balances his bravado with a relatable sense of humility. The songs performed provide a sample of his third studio album, Milky Way, a project that charts his story through the music industry thus far, taking stock of his strides and setbacks along with way. "It's all in the timing / I had to get low, I had to get low," he sings on the chorus of "Tribe."

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

It's sad that people don't see that Dreamville is bigger than just J.Cole
and some people say Cole is the only one with talent in dreamville.... crazy man
@@herb5078 who is saying that lol
@@MyPimpinAfro14 For real. I don't know who tf said either of those things
I’m sure they're aware now. J Cole made sure of that this year.
Yeah who said that ???
Mereba’s voice sounds like when you wear white linen on a hot summer day and you get a good breeze that blows through and refreshes your whole soul. Don’t sleep on sis!
she would kill her set so much man, fr fr. i wonder when she is going to be there tho, her level of artistry hits different as a whole

This unplugged version of Tribe is so smooth & sweet. Tiny Desk killed it again
"Barack Obama Special" has always been one of my faves on Milky Way, but this performance gave me a new appreciation for Purge 🧡🧡🧡

Waking up to a fresh tiny desk with none other than BAS? Am i dreaming?
No you are dreamvilling!!
Ron Gilmore is unreal on the keys🤯
We appreciate you
@WordLsBond the fact that he’s produced a handful of some of the best tracks throughout this stretch of dreamvilles timeline, and still gets overshadowed, blows my mind
It’s sad how real musicians don’t got recognition, look at Terrace Martin
He’s ridiculous on keys bro
I honestly was blown away even at the rendition of Mario Cart and now I want to hear the rest of it.
Mereba 👀. She must be signed to Dreamville on the low
Sean Eboss definitely part of the family 👌🏻

I really appreciate that the names of all the musicians are put in the description now regardless of if there was a point where they were introduced in the video or not.
IF YALL DONT KNOW ABOUT MEREBA LISTEN TO HER SONG SANDSTORM FT. JID
Absolutely beautiful. Gives you Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway vibes.
@@December_baby04 thank you for listening to it :)

Why doesn't this have way more views. Seriously one of the best tiny desks
Big Krit, Bas, and Mac Miller are definitely my favorite tiny desks. I’ve been waiting for this.
I wish intimate shows like this were still around.
You must not have seen the Anderson .Paak episode...
The Anderson Paak and this one are my favorites for sure
Also the The Roots performance, one you cant just ignore
faith H Anderson Paak has the best tiny desk
This set is only 4 tracks too. Incredible. I want more lol.
considering how good his last project was (Milky Way) I’m really looking forward to Spilled Milk

Stop lying, no one expected this
Olivetson Safeway he actually posted a picture of him performing at tiny desk on his IG a couple months ago...soo he was waiting for this.
Dont wanna lie, TRIBE was so melodious. Wow ,that was so phenomenal.
I love this rendition of Tribe. Thanks Bas & crew.
Good start to the day! Blessings n respect Bas! Nuff love from JAMAICA 🇯🇲
The groove on that second song is straight fire
BAS I LOVE YOU SO MUCH so proud you made it to tiny desk - I hope this gets you the recognition you deserve, keep making music your albums have carried me through some hard times 🙏

This sounded incredible. The band was awesome and Bas seems like a chill dude, he killed it. Kudos.
Bas with a live band is on a whole new level
Just smiled through this whole thing, Bas has such wonderful music
This is still on my top 5 NPR Performances. Love Bas!
Never heard of Bas before...this was dope...Purge's melody got me. Thanks NPR TD!
Dammit NPR, I was just about to go to sleep.
One of the best NPR TinyDesk Concerts. This dude's album is out of this world.
Bas is sooo underrated, great guy and great music
I never clicked on something so fast in my life. Feel like playing Mac's concert next
Wish he done Clouds..
I am soooo blissed out because of this music, these people ahhhh....
I've been listening to Tribe all summer, so glad to have this Tiny Desk version
waiting for Cole now. Also kendrick
edit: also knxwledge.
Cole and Kendrick are most definitely not gonna do one
@@zainsohail01 Cole is a possibility. Kendrick however...
@@jeremiahlopez6708 yea I cant even picture Kendrick doing one
Zain S Kendrick worked with Thundercat, Robert glasper and bilal who have all done tiny desk concerts. He also probably has way more experience with live bands and orchestras than J Cole.
Why do you would say he wouldn’t do a tiny desk?
Maximus russo cole always performs with band
MAN imagine if he performed MATCHES and RICOCHET my god
Was about to comment the same thing
Thapelo Mofokeng that would have been unreal tbvhb
If he had the hics with him Jesus 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'd be crying 😂
Deadass saw this guy live.. Still one of the greatest nights of my life
NPR never disappointing! Ugghh!!! Bring all these amazing artists to the light and they just shine!! All pure talent.
imagine being the one in charge with inviting artists to perform at the Tiny ass desk concert!!!!
They need to just change the name now to "Tiny A$$ Desk" at this point.
Lizzo did THAT! 😂❤️😂
Ikr!!!
Their musicianship is phenomenal
That brought me to tears after an emotional week, the vibes were needed, Bas always delivers.
Bas is the realest for shouting out his band over and over- they craaaaank
Absolute fire. Bas is a problem. Cole's a genius for putting him on the squad.
Saw Bas live last night and I urge you all to go when he hits your city. Super nice dude as well as being a great live act. Lute also went off on his warm up set.
Dreamville please send Ari to Auckland next!
Hard to go back to listening to normal music after running through like 5 of these Tiny desk performances. Music just hits different with the instruments live
“That’s how you feel” pure happiness, love from Kenya
shoutout to Peggy getting the mail for Bas! lol that was classic
Everyone talking about how it's so late and they were about to sleep and I'm sitting here at 3pm like (._.)

The whole band is amazing here. what a great concert.
NPR never fails to deliver. I love BAS !!
One of the best tiny desk performances. Love Bas and the Fiends!
Tribe just always puts me in a good mood. Anywhere I hear this song, it makes me want to just groove with my eyes closed, hair out, and w/ a huge grin on my face. Not caring about who’s around or who’s watching. Beautiful set Bas!
That Mario joint Ron was playing was so pleasant, oh man.
GOOD SHIT NPR, man you guys are lowkey getting some pretty big names recently. Thank you so much for this!!!!! you guys rock
High-key
Here’s NPR showing me a new artist I’ve never heard before and make me feel like I already love them
Loving all the hiphop appreciation lately thank you it feels to know that the type of music I grew up listening to is more accepted and shared than back in the day!
One of the dopest MC's on Dreamville
I don't even listen to Purge any other way anymore! These folks sound better than the ablum 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯🔥💯🔥
I have been WAITING for this.
This is fire wow... Bas been around a minute, finally getting the recognition he deserves.
This album sounds really good from front to back. There’s so much replay value, too bad lots of people slept on it last year due to so many great releases. Mereba’s vocals are so smooth!
If you haven’t seen BAS live , don’t die before you do. ITS AMAZING
Bas will always be my fav artist!
Shoutout for bas keeping jazz alive best thing I've seen in a while!
