im doing a auto into m46 is there any difference compared to what you are doing here?

I know automatic cars have a higher gear ratio in the back compared to the manual cars. What does the rpm sit at with the swap on the highway compared to before?

Don’t remember for sure but I think at 70mph it’s about 3200rpm manual in 5th vs auto 2800rpm

I have an 1977 244 and are going to make it manual And are going to put in one m45 are there and differensens?

M45 is only a 4 speed and essentially the same transmission just minus the 5th gear housing. It’s my understanding that you’ll need a m45 driveshaft and you may want a 5th if you do a lot of highway driving

would this be about the same for an AW70 to M46? It's in a 1984 240 wagon.

Yeah same, but you don’t have the crank position sensor or sensor holes on the flywheel to worry about. Going to an m46 you will need to wire up the overdrive relay though, info for that can be had on the forums

What about the correct rear axle?

The auto gears are shorter so it makes the car a bit peppier leaving it with the auto ring and pinion (higher revs on the highway though). I don’t mind this trade off. I have a factory m47 car now on 28” tires and would love to have the shorter auto ratio

@@BudgetBuildBureau - You might not like it after you short shift 1st gear a few hundred times. Correct me if I'm wrong, the lower rear end kicks the revs up about 600 RPM in 5th, at highway speed. That doesn't sound like much until you have to live with it every day. Years ago, I poped a 4-gear and 4-cylinder engine into a 260 auto. Back then, autos came with a taller rear (lower numerically). It was OK, but I was slipping the clutch a lot to get off the line. Finally, I installed the rear-end Volvo wanted in the first place. The car was much more drivable. I'll be keeping an eye out for your posts. I have a '93 auto wagon I might convert.

@@Ricopolico I’ve had 4 240 wagons now 3 of them I swapped (2 m47, 1 m46) and the factory m47. I prefer the short rear end on everyone of them. That being said I’ve always had larger than factory tires on them so that makes up a bit of the difference.

@@BudgetBuildBureau - I've got so many tires on stock rims (14"), I gotta keep it stock. Thanks for the info.
