Fifteen Minutes in the Forest: Making Charcoal and Biochar

I have multiple 55-gallon barrels that I use to make biochar. One small correction @4:00, for NC hardwood biochar at least, is that biochar is about 95.5% carbon. I know this because a few years ago I sent a sample off to the NC DA&CS lab (the AG lab) in Raleigh to get an analysis of my carbon before I inoculated the batch. Calcium makes up 2.93% of the material, with Mg, K, Al making up 0.46%, 0.34%, 0.32% respectively. The remainder is trace elements (P, Fe, S, Na, Mn, Zn, Cu, B in that order). The pH was 8.58.

Nice. I’ve made over 7000 gallons of biochar using “waste” wood off of my 6 acre property. I’d like to see some research/info on using it as a lime replacement on pasture (where I’ve spread most of it).

@@virginiaforestlandowneredu309 My white clover is doing much better, going from maybe 5% of the stand to 50%+, but I’ve also added light applications of NPK to “charge” the biochar, probably 30-15-15 lbs per acre over the past 2 years. Far below the recommended 0-60-60 lbs recommended by my soil test (for legume/grass pasture). I’m going to sample again this fall. Might do two tests, one at the 6 inches deep I usually do, and one 1-2 inches deep where the biochar is probably having more of an effect. I’ve also noticed white clover seems to respond favorably to compaction. So some of stand change may be due to the beef cow I was grazing on my pasture. I am located in the foothills of NC and am interested in having university studies performed on my property. Let me know if you are interested and I will get in touch.
