A forest's understory condition provides benefits for wildlife food and cover as well as the environment for the regeneration of the next overstory canopy including species richness. Indicators of too much or too little of certain plants or species can indicate that something is out of balance.

Very unusual to see an "uneven aged" forest, but that one was pretty close w mature yellow poplar, beech, and white oak with large gaps from mortality etc. and some small and medium aged trees growing next to the old ones.

How do you explain the medium sized trees whose bark was blackened, but not burned, when the area was subjected to a controlled burn? Did some trees die and others survive, or was the fire extinguished before the trees fully caught fire?
