NIKE, ADIDAS AND PUMA FOR THIS FOOTBALL BOOT LIE!

- When you buy new football boots, you probably consider a bunch of different things, many of those decisions being influenced by the information provided by the big brands who actually make the boots. Given that playing on both natural and artificial grass is such a common thing these days, than it would only make sense to have a pair of boots that is suited for use on both playing surfaces, which why FG/AG stud patterns became a thing.
However, what you likely never considered is how safe is an FG/AG stud pattern, especially when being used on artificial grass? Considering that the "FG/AG" branding came out of nowhere and the stud pattern with this label didn't seem to be much different from the "FG" stud patterns that they replaced, I question whether or not "FG/AG" is actually a true multi-surface stud pattern! Are big brands putting you at a higher risk of injury with FG/AG boots? Let's discuss.

Slowly but surely the boot wall becomes more decorated, glad things are getting back to the norm 👏🏽
When you finally get the water out of your ear

Expose them, Jethro
Is John gonna write a book called “unsafe play on surfaces?
This is super important, thank you Josh. This video will definitely save some people from ACL tears
Illarramendi, you still avoiding my question about the low cut variation of the puma one 5.1 that only pros wear just because I call you Illarramendi
Finally you bring this to people’s attention in a proper video
The issue with to much traction also applies on natural surface. Everyone says that the Mercurials offer the best traction, although they require a pitch in a perfect condition in order for them to work. The truth is, specially in lower leagues, pitches tend to be harder and in worse condition (at least in Europe).
For me personally, the Mercurials are way to aggressiv for the "usual" pitch conditions. I suffered minor injuries because of them (twisted ankles). Since I have switched back to boots with a traditional, conical stud pattern, I feel a lot safer and suffer way less injuries!
that's probably because you live in a hot country. here in Ireland where i live it's always wet so you would need a lot more traction here since it is always wet.
yea, using FG on artificial turf greatly increases ankle twisting potential and after a a few 5-a-side games, you'll notice your hips hurt a lot the following day! ive talked to my friends about this and bladed studs cause the most hip pain.
For artificial turf i use a lowest grade grade mercurial from 2018 that were called MG (multi-ground) with hollow conical studs that are shorter in length and it reduced the hip pain a LOT.
green donn are you quite built by any chance? I play every week using fg on a 4g pitch and have never had any hip issues or ankle problems but I’m light and fast
Wish I knew this when I was 16 and had to stop playing football for a couple of years due to constant ankle injuries which I didn’t know why they were happening 😫 we had AG pitch at school and the teachers at the time thought as long as they weren’t bladed it was fine but the length and shape are also factors. Just not worth the risk
Very helpful video man! This kind of info is very important for those who have knees and ankles injuries..
I’ve used that Adidas stud pattern on AG and it’s a definite no! My knees and ankles are generally sore the next day. On longer artificial grass it can grip hard. Stuck to the Nike AG in my opinion, by far the best for the surface.
Thanks for talking about this subject! I busted my left acl using an Adidas FG on artificial the first time I wore them (I have always played on natural). The injury happened when my foot got stuck on the field. 15 months after a reconstruction of the ligament, I went back to the field with a mercurial vapor 11 AG and it fills way better despite the fact that I have used only Adidas for the last 20 years. If you play on artificial, it's a no brainer to play with any Nike having AG outsole.!!
Adidas makes AG outsoles as well. We just don't get them at all in the USA. :( Both Nike and Adidas need to up their AG game here
@@wtfx5757 You're right :) I just don't like the AG outsole of Adidas because it has too many cleats and somehow the shoes look cheap compared to the FG version. I bought my Nike from the UK for the mercurial 11 and customized the mercurial 13 through Nike Canada....
This vid cought me asking what actually the saffest stud pattern to be used in term to decrease the risk of injury while playing.. Back in the day I like to play in triangle shaped stud pattern like you would find in the previous Adidas F50 and end up pooping my knee while turning.. 😅.. I used to play in natural grass surface being not to wet nor dry.. Now, I rather choose to use boots with shorter rounded stud as many says it was more safe but I end up find myself getting lack of enough traction on ground but so far not cought in any injury no more.. So Josh, any advice on my stud choice in the future? Or any boots that you would recommend? Cheers👍
Hey jojo, can you review the latest indoor top end mercurial and tiempo pls? Thanks
I play in the uk, pretty much sg all season 😂
The Deku Tree same here 😂👌💪
I live in Ireland but its the same
I got the X 17+ Purespeed to wear playing on turf this winter after watching all your videos on them.
Hey Josh!
Is there a way to prevent lace bite in the predator 18.1? I've seen some other players tie their laces behind the collar instead of on top of it, do you think that helps?
I'd day the the hypervenoms 2 are basically fg ag. They work great on both playing surfaces.
Yup, it depends on which stud pattern and stud shape it is. The Tiempo FG stud pattern works just as well on AG.
I used AG nemeziz on turf and at the end of my session the studs looked like they had little pieces rubbing off so i stopped wearing them on turf
I remember ronaldo wore Sg superflys in an international game for Portugal that was played on an AG pitch, have no clue why he would risk injury like that.
Could you do an episode comparing first take down footballs from major companies (select, Nike, adidas, etc.)
Nike wearer here. I’ve the mercurial vapor 12 & 13 club lowest of range boot but it’s still great on artificial (good mix of round and chevron) so I’m glad I chose right.
Nike tiempo’s work really good on AG. Specially the new eddition.
I still have the 4s and they have a really good stud pattern. I havent had any problems on Ag
I always play on AG pitches. I found fg/ag studs on puma ultras too long. I actually think turf boots are my safest style. No stud pressure. On rainy days an AG boot with short studs works better than turf of course
Agree with the Puma comments. Studs are way too long for AG. I did get stud pressure on AG with these. Great video. As always, wish we had more AG options....
Even Nike's ag-pro stud pattern is too aggressive on my ankles w/ the 2 heel chevron blades.
R its safe??because ive planning to buy mercurial 13 AG PRO
2:00 whoa Josh is a magician
Hey Josh,
I totally agree with you. That's my story for the everybody; I played with Adidas predators 08 FG about 7 years on AG pitch. At that time Iwas injured both my ankles. Now I understand the problem. FG boots are grip too much on the pitch and for this reason your foot locked on the pitch. At that time your body moves without your foot and foot sprain or rupture injuries occurred. By the way now I play with vapor12 AG boots but I don't know why these boots made extra pain on my knees. Also I am very disappointed about blisters that mercurial upper surface made.
I wear Puma Ones FG/AG on AG and have never had any issues. The studs are round and shorter than most boots.
I wear Vapor 13 FG on AG surfaces and I’ve had too much stress on my ankles I’ve had to buy AG stud pattern cleats
Jimothy is so humble for telling the truth of stud patterns
I use FG boots on AG biggest mistake ever, I sprained my ankle 😖
So Mr. Jevinus I found a pair of puma evopower 1.3 in the tricks colorway from the euro 2016 for $65, would you recommend
From personal experience, I have just recently tore my ACL and Meniscus from wearing an FG/AG boot on artificial grass. The stud pattern was far too aggressive for the artificial grass, and my boot got stuck in the ground at full speed causing my knee to cave in. I am definately getting an AG specific boot when I can play again so I have less of a risk of reinjuring myself.
Ulysis Slagle What is the name of your FG/AG boots ?
@@ulrichmendes7790 It was the Predator 18.1 Leather.
@@UlysisSlagle Snapped mine using the Nike Mercurial Superfly 6 Elite AG Pro. Injured myself on Earth Pitch, boot got stuck too. It's worst thing imaginable, stay clear of that boot!
About pros playing with FG boots on artificial grass, here in Brasil the Athletico Paranaense has an artificial pitch, and they wet the field before and in the half time of every match, it seems very, very slipery, the players fall a lot, the ball is very fast, the club says their field is the most modern artificial grass there is. Maybe this professionals grounds with AG are a lot different from the ones we can play in, and it's safaty for 'em, it doesn't make any sense pros put their bodies in such danger.
The stadium is called "Arena da Baixada" for the one curious about it.
which situation do you get injured when having to much traction
I train on an artifical ground and play on a normal grass ground, what I choose? (I play with Nike mercurial)
Thank you very much. I got injured and was out for half of the season
Hey Josh!
Is there any leather boot for my size (EU 37.5, US 5) and for artificial grass? It can be of any brand and price, but help me find it please, i'm desperate.
Thanks a lot!
I have predator 19+ but the traction on FG is too weak, which I often changed back to my Magista (1) during games...
Would the stud pattern on predator 19.1 or 19+ be ok on artificial grass because it does not provide the best traction on natural grass?
I think any stud pattern that uses straight edges on the studs has the potential to cling to the playing surface, which is exactly what you don't want.
But football boots can be expansive to buy two pair of boots. Because with my team we train and play games on both grass and on artifical grass. What shoes do I buy then, would be cool if you answered this.
Puma have the mg stud pattern version and that’s really popular in China
Hi jim Bob I am after some of the dream speeds for ag and are they worth the money
Hey Josh, great video. I think it's an element of boots people overlook, but could help avoid injuries tremendously. I am recovering from an ACL tear - I usually stick to my Nike Magista Opus FG (fantastic boots) which have the conical studs, but am very keen to switch to the Adidas Predator 18.1 (black/gold) FG boot which have the more angular studs, but not too triangular. Would you recommend giving the Predators a try (they shouldn't grip too much, right?) or stick to the Magistas. I play touch rugby on real, FG grass.
That skit at the beginning deserves millions of likes
My torn ACL totalt agrees with you. A dry 5th gen field and a toe stud that caught as i reached for a ball and there you go.
This helped me alot I'm looking a boot too wear on AG and FG because training is done on AG but need a boot for games on firm I would like a boot that isn't too expensive but don't want a cheap boot any ideas what are the best boots for the average price ie £70-£130 type price
Wear Copas with round studs. Blades got me two fractured ankles in 2years
Thats exactly what happened to me. i was about to start playing for 1st division team and we had pre season friendly game. FG shoes on Artificial grass, knee twisted and career after that was gone. so its better to lose a little bit of traxion and save your legs.
Ive worn Adidas nemeziz 18.1 FG/Ag on AG pitch and doesnt work well on my feet reduce my performance at all
Can you do a video comparing weight between FG and AG stud patterns?
I’ve worn fg boots on artificial grass twice a week for the past three years and have never experienced any major injury’s
James Curran Same pal possibly even longer!
I literally have a pair of cleats that I wear on every field
He doesn’t suggest that you 100% get an injury. Feel lucky. I broke my shin during turning because my foot had too much grip. So yeah. 8 Months no football bro that‘s really long man.
Are firm ground cleats on ag surfaces only risky when you play a game ? Because I’m sure you’ve done play tests with fg boots on ag surfaces.
Funny timing, I switched from the copa 18.1 with the all conical studs to the predator 18.1 with the triangular studs and blew my ACL/LCL the 2nd time I've used them from too much grip :(
Hey Josh can you please make a video on the difference between pebax and tpu soleplate and the pros and cons of each
wore my fg vapor 13's on astroturf and done my ankle from the studs being too long for the surface
Will nemeziz 19+ work for ag?
Hey Joshua, which boots do think are more durable for playing on AG, the X 19+ FG or the Vapor 13 elite AG pro?
The AG-Pro Vapor for sure.
Totally agree, waited for 2 months to get AG boots...
Is it okay to wear Turf boots on ag grass?
right after i injured my knee on AG with the lotto stadio 45
I personally play in both surfaces. Can AG boots also be usted in FG surfaces and still have good traction
Where can you find ag vapor 13’s?
This question came to me this morning in the shower. Now I come on UA-cam and I see this. Thanks, Josh.
It depends how you play. I play with fg/ag boots all the time and I bearly get injured.
whats the difference between AG and Astro turf?
Hey Juan, another great video, and very interesting topic!
For playing on artificial grass, are the oval and rounded studs on the Nemeziz 19.1 FG/AG better than the bladed/triangular studs found on the other 19.1 FG/AG models from Adidas (e.g., X 19.1)?
In general, I find Adidas' recent AG studs somewhat slippery in wet conditions (e.g., Predator 19.1). Is the traction on the Nemeziz 19.1 FG/AG significantly more agressive than
Nike's AG-PRO studs (e.g., Vapor 12 pro)?
Hope you have time to reply! Maybe even dicuss this on the Boot Nerds channel?
Best regards from Norway!
I think the Nemeziz stud pattern is the most suitable for use on AG out of all of the FG/AG options from Adidas. AG-Pro is still a better "true" AG stud pattern however.
Thanks for replying@@Soccerreviewsforyou!
Would you, personally, entirely avoide using FG/AG variations on artifical grass when it comes to team practice and playing matches?
Whats your opinion on the Predator Accuracy MG soleplate?
I’ve got two teenage daughters (17yrs and 16yrs) playing high level soccer who are in need of high quality AG cleats. One actually tore all 2yrs ago where FG cleats on artificial turf, so we’re uber sensitive to buying the right cleats. What is the best stuff you recommend in the AG category that we can purchase here in the US from you?
Unfortunately, availability of AG stud patterns in the US isn't very good at the moment. There are a bunch of options available here soccerreviewsforyou.com/ag-boot-deals/
In Brazil no one plays with those type of soleplate . Only the small ones.
Josh would you say old school Mizuno morelias are safe on AG? I find them ok but the studs are slightly longer than the copa mundials
I definitely think they are.
adidas also has for the copa 19.1 an AG only stud pattern option for some colorways, what do u think about them?
They're great for use on AG.
Hey josh I recently purchased tiempo legend pro 7 but they keep giving me heel blisters and suggestions?
Grip socks.
Can relate. Broke my shin while turning without an opponent near me
is it safe to use hg boots on ag and fg?
i have been training on poor turf for around 4 years, however i just bought the new tiempos. Would u recommend me buying a pair of ag boots ?
If the turf is poor and compacted from heavy use, the only thing safe and not prone to cause injury would be turf soles. If the field is in decent condition and the «grass» is up then go AG
I have achilles tendonitis which destroyed my college rugby career and years of playing time in amateur leagues afterward. I totally believe that I got the injury from wearing FG on artificial grass. Unfortunately back then AG studs weren't popular nor widely available for purchase from where I play rugby. Now I play in AG boots and with less aggressive style (more walking, less spriting lol) the tension on my achilles and calf are significantly reduced, even though the pain is still there and probably will accompany me for the rest of my life.
Same, I was wearing f50 adizeros, I got stuck trying to avoid a tackle heard a crack and messed up my talus which then caused my tibia to shift now I have achilles tendonitis this was 10 years ago I am now 36. I couldn't walk properly for 3 or 4 years. Good days and bad days still with tendonitis also lost 30% of my flexibility in my ankle. The injury messed up my entire right side of my body it also messed with me mentally seeing so many docs. I still play competitive soccer though, have to take pills before playing though. Although I prefer the x 18's and 19's that I have because of the heel cushion (helps prevent movement in that back of the heel) I went back to my copa mundials with a trusox combo. This combo seems to work best for my injury while playing on ag.
Great video Nestor Araujo
I only wear nike AG, including on grass unless its very wet
How about mizuna nebula? Is that the same thing as X when we playing kn AG grass?
Not for me, because it has more studs and there are rounded. And, the comfort and flexibility of the rebula sole plate...are amazing . (I cutted a little but the studs, and are better for me)
I like AG stud on FG. Slippery is good. I hate when my boots grab on the grass making me feel unnatural.
@@camron4255 play for fun once a week. No training.
Jehosaphat, I was wondering if you thought that electronically controlled laces could ever be used in football boots?
Hi everyone ;). I am Fausto, from Spain.
I have different brands of football boots, Adidas, nike, mizuno (copa 19.1, mizuno morelia neo, rebula v1, nike tiempo legend 7 ag, adidas 17.1 ag, and 18.1 fg...) and with different sole plate versions, (all with rounded studs) and the best I did in all the sole plates...it is to "cut" a little bit (or more depends on the lartge of the studs) the studs and it is working very very well . There are some reasons to this;
1. I am living in Valencia, and we have "warm weather" all the year..and only rains a few days.
2. The maintenance and quality of some AG stadiums are so bad...and there are some old ...
3. For me, it is better to have less grip than too much grip, because it causes to me, pain on ankles and knees and "overloaded muscles"
4. I play more quiet doing this
About my best results..for me, the AG plate of Adidas (17.1,18.1,19.1 are the same)..it is the best for each different situations (and I "cutted2 a little bit the studs too)...and the Mizunos sole plates are so comfortable and flexible. Nike AG sole plate has most grip of the otther brands and runs good too in better conditions in AG surfaces.
And..I think that is all :P
Thanks Josh for your videos!!
Josh, I wore my fg/ag Future on turf and the stud broke, can I still use it when I play on natural grass?
1 year later... yes I’m missing a stud on each of my boots from playing on turf with fg boots. I use them all the time on grass and haven’t noticed any problems.
Josh, would I be better off wearing a AG Nike Vapor 13 coming from a knee injury? (Bakers Cyst) Or should I stick to FG
If I was in that situation, I'd go for the AG-Pro version.
@@Soccerreviewsforyou wicked! appreciate the help mate. I had the same taught I'll get those Vapor 13 elite in AG-Pro
What about my fg magistas? Are they safe?
Hi mate do you still have those cleat skins I want them can you ship it for me pls I want them so bad I live in saudi arabia
For real, FG on even the worst, worn-out artificial pitches are usually fine. Seriously. I shifted from FG to AG on artificial just because it helped my ball striking better but the difference between them isn't really that much.
2 of my mates have done their acl with the same old school adidas ag/fg on hard pitch. Coincidence?
i did too wearing a pair of magista obra II last year, but fortunally now i'm playing again weairng a pair of puma future 19.2 MG
i wish nike, adidas etc boots adds some small marbles on ag studs
The maintenance of most artificial turf has not been done very well. Even the nike's AG studs are sometimes too long. Nike named those AG-"Pro" for a reason, AG-R (released years ago and is now replaced by AG-Pro on high-end lines) would be the best choice on most artificial turf.
Tianyi Zhang I bought some AG-R vapor 10s on eBay they’re dope , I’d like to see an AG-R & AG-Pro comparison vid tbh 🤔
Where can I buy AG boots?
Too bad it is almost impossible to find Nike AG boots. Odd, since a huge portion of HS and club pitches are now AG.
Is an AG stud pattern better that a turf shoe on turf
Lol
What about wearing MG boots on AG fields (performance and risk of injury)
Would the old school Copa mundial be ok to wear on artificial grass?
Yes, totally safe.
Having wrong boots for the surface was major reason why I tore my ACL. People should really take this seriously
i got an acl injury because of this. im still only recovering. my foot got stuck while i tried to pivot
@Philip H vapour silencio 360
@@manuemmanuele1217 Same i blew mine out with the same stud pattern
I got an ankle injury, wearing puma future because they were too clingy. Adidas Copa 18.1 gives me the same clingy feel on the AG surface (their studs are all conical but they are too long). I wear either Mizuno Morelia Neo 2 MIJ or ASICS ultrezza AI on artificial glass. They never give me that clingy feel on the AG surface. I definitely feel safer with those Japanese brands boots.
I think that the large and number of the sutds are makes the difference...(on AG are better short sutds) and so important..how is the maintenance of the AG surface where you plays.
@@faustogutierrez5480 The surface I usually play is fairly new and so in a good condition (i.e., relatively deep and soft). Ultrezza has shorter than normal studs. Both Morelia Neo II and Ultrezza are officially approved by Mizuno and Asics respectively for the AG surface.
