If McDowell did not have those issues, this would have been a 1-2 race between McDowell, and Byron, would have been great to see. And honestly, if not for the mistake and car issue, I believe McDowell would’ve had two in a row. He had no trouble holding off Byron in stage one.
As an Australian it seems the qualifying for Road tracks gives you a huge indication on who’s gonna to do well, ovals not as much, but McDowell qualified well close to poll and same for Bryon. This track is awesome it’s got everything you want

This was the most F1 ish racetrack... I'll be honest ... im not a NASCAR GUY... always was an F1 indycar and IMSA fan... but this year has totally convinced me to get into this. 😅
I'm the same, once it became horrendously clear that red bull have ruined the new regulations in f1 for the next however many years i started looking elsewhere and the yanks have been knocking it out of the park this year! My dream scenario for next year is the giz going full time in NASCAR and schooling a few folk and an Arrows McLaren winning the Indy title 😂

My brother in Christ the main layout would be the biggest snoozer of the season. Also a safety hazard too because of the downhill braking zone with a wall just outside of it

Also just feels strange not to be using the whole track on which is arguably one of the top five American circuits (Sebring will always be top for me). Congrats to Byron, he drove a great race. Shame for McDowell, though. He's got the speed, and the team definitely has the setup, but they gave this one away.
They call that takinga dive in boxing. I quit rooting Mc Sowell. You gotta know your going through 5 peoples pits. Denny does it different, he self wrecks.
Outside the curbs the track is much less maintained, so there's still a natural penalty for running out there, even if it's paved. During qualifying Hamlin got airborne because the outside asphalt on the exit of turn 1 is so bumpy. Contrast that with when Nascar runs at COTA, where there's immaculate pavement on every runoff, and there's always controversy about whether some drivers are under more scrutiny through the esses than others. The real solution is to use transponders to enforce track limits in those corners that aren't self-policing, but it seems like Indycar is the only series that likes doing that. (including at COTA if they ever return to the track)

The track will clean up pretty quick with cars driving over it, which likely means that the penalty of going wide isn't really much of a penalty

It’s a great track to go to if you’re sitting in the 90 or by a giant screen to show the race otherwise to be there live you see the cars go by every 90 seconds for 90 times. You can’t see the race at all just the one part of the track you sit at. And a lot of the stands minus the frontstretch are bought for corporate employees for whatever business buys them so it’s hard to find good seats. I’ve been going there all my life and one year just decided the best seat in the house is on my couch.

That I do like to talk about. Skip Barber in Alabama is next level gorgeous! The museum is incredible. I guess I prefer my race tracks unpolished one might say.
McDowell had pace all race but got plagued by dumb mistakes like that pitbox after stage one before that catastrophic failure in the final stage. Congrats to Byron in the 24, he was where he needed to be.
William Byron finishes 14th at the Indy Road Course after the adversity of failing Qualifying Inspection and was the only HMS car to finish outside the Top 10 Fast Forward 1 week he obliterates the competition at the Glen and was the only HMS car to finish inside the Top 10 (Really inside the Top 20)
This race has always been been too short! It needs to be at least 100 laps, but I'd say 110 would be the sweet spot. I attend every year and I remember years when the race would start at 1 and we would be leaving by 3:30. That's pretty short for a NASCAR race, especially for the cost to attend a race weekend!
Please, do something about the sound, I can't spend my time adjusting the volume while watching, it sounds so amateurish... Still, thx for these highlights !

I don’t know for sure, but I live in the area. And a HUGE amount of Canadians come down for the race. Some of the most populated areas of Canada are only a 4 to 5 1/2 hour drive to the track.

@@brokensmilephotothat's because on the tracks they enforce them on, the cars are traveling at nearly 200mph and nobody wants a dead driver or fans or both. Road course average speeds are relatively low. Nobody wants a repeat of F1s trip to Austria this year where the track limits violations were more exciting than the actual race.
Like fr those runoff areas were built to contain cars on the real racing line. Pushing the racing line 50ft into the runoff area makes those corners that much more dangerous as there's that much less runoff to contain cars going at higher speeds that the track is designed for. Once again NASCAR proves safety is not top priority.
NASCAR nonsense in a nutshell: you're allowed to go 50 feet off track all day just fine, but can't drive through even 3.01 pit boxes without a penalty 🙄🙄

Also, if I may add, JD Mcduffie lost his life in the Carosel and this was at the time where there was no Bus Stop Chicane, so this allows the cars to slow down without having to Slow down going into the Carosel 👍

The chicane does slow them down some before having to make that sharp turn going into the carousel
