  • Although important progress has been made in the last two decades in reducing the maternal and newborn mortality rates, there are still gaps and inequities in terms of access to and quality of care. What saves the lives of mothers and babies, and prevents and treats maternal injuries, such as obstetric fistula? Access to skilled care, like that provided by our partners, Fistula Foundation and One Heart Worldwide.
Fistula Foundation is the global leader in fistula treatment, providing more surgeries to more women than any other organization, including the U.S. government and United Nations. Rise's grant supports training of Community Health Volunteers and patient ambassadors, and radio advertising to spread awareness of fistula and fistula treatment options to enable the referral and treatment of women at two partner facilities in Tanzania.
One Heart Worldwide works to save the lives and promote the wellbeing of mothers and their newborns in underserved areas of rural Nepal. Rise's support of this project expands the Simulation-Based Mentorship Program for maternal and newborn health (MNH) providers, resulting in a stronger and more equitable health system for women and, ultimately, a reduction in adverse outcomes for mothers and their newborns.
Our guest speakers were Hannah Garone, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Fistula Foundation, and David Murphy, CEO of One Heart Worldwide. Hannah's background includes building community partnerships and recruiting with an AmeriCorps organization focused on education equity, and teaching both locally and internationally. David has a long history working at domestic and international NGOs, including the International Rescue Committee in the Middle East, Africa, and U.S.
