    This older guy I became acquainted with back in the 70's was an elk hunter, that was his passion. He told me he hunted deer to prepare for elk season, had only bagged 3 deer in his life, they were all B&C. Clyde was his name, said the best way to hunt elk was to live with them from day one to the time you had yours in your rig, I thought he meant to do what you do now and hunt daylight to dark, wrong, he actually lived in the hunting area for a few days with the elk all around, if they moved at night he got up and moved with them. The man smelled like an elk so he didn't disturb them, he ate cold food when he got hungry, drank from water holes, even out of tracks that had water. I hunted the same areas he hunted and would cross him once in a while, we helped each other pack out more than once. I managed to get an elk yearly for 9 years using his method, Clyde passed away in his truck with a large bull in the back in 1988. I quit hunting elk in 1991 and deer in 1996. Love watching Randy and his adventures and wish I was still able to get out and do that, COPD has taken that away now along with cancer, but it is still great to watch these hunts.

      9 years is a heck of an accomplishment, but just a footnote to your awesome memories. All the best.

      You're absolutely right, most of the elk or mule deer hunters I watch on UA-cam hunt all day come to camp 🏕 at night cook a meal in their tent get the smell of food on them then go out the next mornin with the smell of vittles on their camos and expect to get up close and personal with the game , yes some do but in most cases they don't. Great lesson you learned. Prayin for your health

      Awesome story but it’s not possible for a human to smell like an elk. No matter what you do your going to smell like ASS in two days and your smell will just get worse and worse. Gotta use the wind properly

    The Jemez is my back yard very tough hunting in the burns, but lots of big elk. Wife got one a few years back in a deep canyon. Lots of very hard work we got him out. You made the right choice bailing on the first bull.

    Randy is an artist. He paints a picture through his words, wit and infectious personality. How could you not enjoy sharing a campfire with him -- matchstick blow downs excluded.

    "You okay shootin him the bed" "Me too". Thats the most Randy thing after years of listening to Elk Talk I've heard except for all his marriage advice! Love it!

    I never hunted, never even known anyone personally that has hunted. Now that I'm old enough, I wish so badly that I could meet an older gentleman that I could just go hunting with. Don't have to shoot anything, don't have to have any of the meat. I just want to learn from someone that's done it, successfully, for a long time. Seems some people that grew up going out hunting with their dads/grandpas don't realize how incredibly lucky they are. There is so much to learn/acquire, skill, wisdom, and gear, makes it difficult starting from absolute 0.

      I'm an adult onset hunter myself. I've had very few people to learn from, mostly learned from just getting out there, messing up, and doing it. But you're right, those who grew up with it definitely have an advantage in some ways over those who came to it later. If you're ever in or around Idaho during hunting season, while I'm not an older gentlemen with a long streak of success, you'd be welcome to go out with me.

  • @daryl2204
    @daryl2204 Рік тому

    My dad used to employ the rock rolling technique on mule deer, of course he missed every shot at the bucks as they hightailed it out of the canyon.. this Wyoming hunter doesn’t do that 😊

    I have a pretty good idea which unit this is. For whatever reason in that area the hunters have no manners or respect. Had a guide that hunts up there shoot into a canyon in my direction trying to get elk to move. Its ridiculous. Great hunt though!
