Southern California International Gateway (SCIG) Overview

  • Southern California residents are looking for relief from traffic, pollution and a sluggish economy. Through this process, we learn the roads to good jobs, less traffic and better air quality are all connected.
    This is why BNSF Railway Company is proposing to build the Southern California International Gateway (SCIG). Trucks moving goods on the I-710 freeway travel 24 miles from the Ports of LA and Long Beach to downtown rail yards. With SCIG, we can move these goods off our freeways and onto rail, shortening the truck trip from 24 to 4 miles and connecting Southern California to good jobs, less traffic and cleaner air.

    In Jolly Olde Virginia the state has constructed an "Inland Port" some 200 miles from the major container ship terminals. Among other things, it's a customs clearing facility. The facility is only so-so successful but it does have connections to Interstate highways and railroads heading north and south.

    I read the warehouses in the LA area are over 95% of capacity. Chicago isn’t keeping up and products are backing up all the way to Asia

    Port area transportation needs to evolve, and this is not such a stretch. The SoCal Industrial Real Estate Blog notes that at present, the land is generally used for cross docking (cargo transfer from one mode of transportation to another mode, such as from a container to a trailer. ), warehousing, and container and/or trailer maintenance servicing and storage.
