This has nothing to do with a lack of intelligence. Mos Def has been a devout muslim since he was very young, so he feels threatened by having any kind of association with extreme radicalism. This is probably the case with most muslims in the US and the rest of the world.
I mean, he is quick and sharp. Just uneducated perhaps. I think this panel jumped all over him without listening to what he was saying. He was making a good point. What was the Taliban's specifically laid out motives. He wanted to know their plan, their next step. Not a bad thing to know, and none of the other panelists knew. The best they could conquer up was "restoring the caliphate and acquiring nuclear weapons". Okay? Well that's still pretty broad. Anything more specific? They couldn't come up with it and instead jumped on him and selectively misheard what he was saying. Show me where they want to go on the world stage, Mos Def said. No one could answer. It's a good question
Mos Def: “I’m strong enough to hold an unpopular idea.” Christopher Hitchens: “We’re just waiting to see evidence that you do that.” Bill Maher: “Awe, Chris.” When the exhibition gets called off by the ref because one contestant is clearly afraid to leave the ropes, in over their head, and the other begins going for the knockout.
The rapper asked a question. They answered him. The rapper said he’s strong enough to hold unpopular opinions. They asked him what those strong opinions were. Embarrassing.
Depends on what your objective is. If you're trying to better yourself and understand something, it's great debating with someone smart. It's only a problem if you're trying to _win_ ... And that's a bit of a problem when most experience people have with debates is all about winning at all costs, not _figuring out who is right_ . I don't know how prevalent that is, but most of the debate classes I've seen are only interested in techniques to defeat your opponent, rather than having a civilised debate about a particular topic. And of course, the vast majority of what we see on TV is exactly the same, with many not even having the basic decency to avoid contradicting themselves in the same debate :D You could see the difference here easily enough - when you disagree with something your "ally" says, you say it. You don't keep it to yourself to "strengthen your side", much less jump on the wagon. Disagreement is normal and healthy. People have different values and different information. You can change some of that, and be changed yourself. That's what debates are for. That's what used to make them entertaining - learning stuff. It's a shame the vast majority of debates bring their entertainment from having rude bigots, "idiots you disagree with" and useless "moderators".
I was at this taping. To say this was cringy and embarrassing is an understatement. “Mr Definitely” still makes me laugh to this day when I think about it. How Mos Def could yap for so long without saying anything at all is stupefying.
@@TheRealDebussyFarts while I appreciate the spot of humor, I would say I "almost" agree with that. I find some select lyricists to be engaging, clever and socially conscious in a manner I would consider artistic, but the vast majority of hip hop I've heard is not to my taste or enjoyment.
Mos Def: So what is the Taliban's manifesto and Al Qaeda's objectives? Panel: Gives details of Taliban's manifesto and Al Qaeda's objectives. Mos Def: Hey I don't trust the media or your opinion, I do my own research. So why did you ask?
Countries don't go to war over whether or not they have disagreements about how a government is treating some poor civilians, they go to war when a government is mistreating our rich civilians. Western "sympathies" the plight of people in the middle east is a thinly veiled attempt to destroy their political organization and culture in order to subvert its future competitors. Who cares if America is #1 if our civilians are happy and well protected. Every country has to tolerate America being the global hegemon for decades and everything has gotten worse. Clearly the game that they're playing isn't for our benefit.
He asked because he is a pretend muslim. Because of people like Malcolm X. He has twisted philosophies into punchlines and catchphrases. Like "I do my own research" "I'm an independent thinker" It's all virtue signaling and empty. Then he doesn't realize he is about to befriend a group of terrorists just to fit into a character he has built in his mind. The character he wishes he can be with all the correct virtues so he can liken himself to someone like X. Money can't buy common sense and logic.
I don't know squat about Mos Def, but he seemed as though he can thoughtfully think something through, but he failed to do any homework and realize he was paired with two well-known contemporary intellectuals, and kept arrogantly blurting his false bravado instead of having the humility to listen and learn. It was definitely irritating but I appreciated Rushdie's wisdom in just calmly answering his questions and trying to keep everything civil. And while I always love a good Hitch takedown, in this case I was disappointed that he let himself get annoyed and went for the jugular, as usual. He should have been bigger than that. It was like seeing Rocky Balboa in the ring with Squiggy.
He should have let Hitch go full Hitchslap. Mos Def needed his ego taken down enough pegs that after Hitch gave him stress diarrhea, Mos Def, now relieved of that shit he was so full of, could go to sleep that night in a matchbox.
Those who are “just asking a question” but are unwilling to examine any answer that doesn’t conform to their preconceived narrative are not asking a question at all.
Wtf is it with whoever invited Mos Def, they had to explain to him twice and on the 2nd time Salman was getting deeper and clearer and more interesting and we get the most unnecessary argument.
How DARE an intellectual coward like Maher say to Hitchens "oh, I'm sure that's just the scotch talking," when in fact Hitchens is cogently dismantling the groundless ramblings of "Mr. Def" with ease.

Lol why was Mos Def on this panel. This reminds me of the Dave Chapelle skit where they are asking what Ja Rule’s thoughts are on a global matter. Whats sad is that he is supposed to be one of the more intelligent rappers. I still think he is one of the more thoughtful ones but man is he incredibly ignorant, and while he says he doesn’t believe whatever he is told, all his beliefs are mainstream far left beliefs that he buys into. As far as Assata Shakur goes, Im sure there was a lot of shotty police work done in that investigation, not so sure it was racism though, more like the cops were mad some of their own were murdered. But there was evidence in that case that she killed them. It was either her or the other men she was with. All of whom were black. Those defending her admit it mustve been one of the men who committed the murders and she was unfairly blamed because of racism. I don’t see how its racist to put the blame one black person over the other. Thats some ridiculous logic
I think part of the problem is that he's looked at as very intelligent and given big ups for it and so he seems to actually slack on research etc and tries to coast off of his feelings being generally well received in other areas. Man takes his systemic racism beliefs and applies them to basically everything.
What I love so much about Hitchens is that no matter what, he will call out things that he disagrees with. You can see this in many of his appearances, people who are supposed to be “on his side” say something, and despite the fact that he may have been agreeing with them for the past 5 minutes, he won’t even slightly hesitate to call out what he disagrees with. Idiots like Bill Maher are the exact opposite of this, they will refrain from disagreeing with people on their side purely for the sake of making sure their side looks sturdier
bill Maher was racist by suggesting Hitchens was going to be beaten ump. Mom Def didn't come off violent at all but he does come across as completely uninformed which begs the question, "why is he even on the show?" that's the problem with this show.
And of course, the vast majority of what we see on TV is exactly the same, with many not even having the basic decency to avoid contradicting themselves in the same debate :D
You could see the difference here easily enough - when you disagree with something your "ally" says, you say it.
