British Airwave were rightfully “The Worlds Favorite Airline”. I worked for BA Sales in Dallas Texas. Sir Colin came to an award dinner in Fallas this year. We had the Southwest of the USA that covered everything west of Texas. So Houston, DFW, Phoenix and SAN Diego. All flights were to LGW on the ex BCal DC 10’s. The service was exceptional. BA were the first to introduce the Lie Flat Beds in Business Class. The rest of the worlds was stunned in to following.
On my honeymoon I flew from DFW to LGW with a connection to Zürich. I will never forget the stewardess asking me for my headset as we were landing. I asked.......”What already? Ask the captain to go round again so I can finish the movie.” These days we just want to get off the plane.

I was so shocked when I heard that BA loved the DC-10 and wished they got some in the 70's. Rather than just being a by-product of a takeover, the DC-10 was one of the best jetliners BA ever had.

Shame BA messed up. They were such a good airline under King/Marshall. Now they’re run by Spanish and Irish men who turned them into a budget airline.

I hope things improve for the airline and next year's profits will be better

I suspect that a major part of the problems the airline faced at the time and the relative better performance of the comparison airlines shown was down to a different staff philosophy. Perhaps, whereas the other airlines were maybe more flexible with their attitudes towards their staff, who were therefore readier to absorb changes in operating procedures, unfortunately, British Airways always seemed to adopt more 'stick' than 'carrot'. As a result it became harder for the airline to successfully introduce the necessary range of changes required to raise the profit margin.

Was economy select the same seat pitch & width as regular economy? Same 9 abreast?

@Visionist. Hi - the seating was the same in terms of number of seats abreast but the seat pitch was better by a couple of inches with an enhanced cabin service too.

I would further argue that euro traveller business class is what economy was in the 1980's.

Ah ‘The famous saying to become a millionaire in airlines, you have to first be a billionaire and buy an airlines.’ We are all playing a losing game with Arab countries. They chose which airlines succeed and who doesn’t by controlling the cost to operate and give themselves favourable prices for fuel.
