  • Singapore is celebrating its 55th National Day soon. In the spirit of this coming National Day, meet Cantonese speaking Aunty Rose with her legendary language skills.
She is able to speak at least 2 other Chinese dialects, on top of mastering Tamil too, as her mother tongue. This skill was common for her generation, but becoming extinct amongst the younger Singaporeans.

The whole block knew her and she knows everyone. The gate was seldom lock as there are some ladies always going and coming to visit. Leadership......
Our dear leadership took 30 years to foster the Singaporean identity. Then a new batch of leaders decided it was a good idea to bring on as MANY foreigners as possible so that the Singaporean identity ended up becoming diluted. Now, there exists a bunch of people, living on our beloved island, who have no idea what being Singaporean means. Many of them don't WANT to even know. If we get lucky, MAYBE we can teach their kids this Singaporean identity. All this because some leaders decided it was a good idea to open the floodgates to foreigners......

I come from that era. In those days our kampung was peaceful and gotong royong. We co-celebrate each other’s new years and anytime we kids could eat in our neighbour’s house. No halal issues. Teng nang, gweilo, keling kia, bengali, etc, were not derogatory terms. We were mostly uneducated and had no bad feelings.
These days, its these nonsense western “political correctness” ideas thats dividing people into categories. Our asian culture is better than that. Western culture breeds individualism while our asian culture cultivates sense of community and family. That is why China is ahead economically and socially and this pandemic is more controlled in asian society and mostly eradicated in China except for new cases imported from abroad. My 2 cents!

Upon hearing Singaporean’s speak their accent (voice) seems to contain a noticeable mixture of a variety of Asian languages. I suppose there are pros and cons about it since policies instated by some countries make learning certain dialects compulsory so that majority of the populace could understand each other. But because of this certain regional dialects may gradually fade away if they are simply not spoken frequently or used by the locals.

This is how we should be. This is also what Singapore is all about. Unlike these days, every little things is racist. Of all things we learn this racist bullshit from Americans and Europeans. My salute to this Auntie Rose, our good old days. Hope the younger generation watch this and appreciate it.
