Harley-Davidson's Unusual 2023 Roll-Out of the CVO's Hit Different

  • During Harley-Davidson's official model launch in January they only unveiled one CVO for the 2023 lineup. Typically we see 3-4 CVOs every year and so there was huge void left. Fast-forward to June and H-D drops a teaser for what will be one of the biggest single-year advancements in CVO history. The touring chassis CVO's, Road Glide and Street Glide, have a completely redesigned body style along with a beefed up 121 CI Milwaukee-Eight engine.
Matt and Nick dive into 2023 CVOs and dissect the roll out of these new bikes. They also explore what exactly makes CVOs so special and other ideas that Harley-Davidson could leverage.

I'm still on a '14 Ultra and very happy with those Rushmore upgrades that are now 10 years old. The CVO's look great, but I'm riding the 14 until she dies!

I traded my 13 ultra limited for this bike. I had it for over ten yrs and did a lot of miles on it. When I saw that paint and basically the whole package I could not help myself. I’m crazy about this bike, it’s gorgeous!!! I just wish I could adapt to the electronics quicker. It will come.

In previous model years, CVO's would come in to my local area dealerships and immediately have "hold" or "sold" signs on them. Never saw one sit on the showroom - ever. This year, my local dealership has had 5-6 new CVO's sitting, for months and months. Interesting times

Yea, production is always a big factor along with demand of course. I feel this year they tried to cram a full model year worth of product into 5 months of selling time. We've had some dark platinum CVOS available to sell that weren't pre-sold in the last few weeks. On the other hand, I've had customers waiting 5 months for whiskey neat Street Glides that are still waiting.

I test drove the new 2023 CVO's in Milwaukee at the 120th. Loved the effortless power of the 121 vvt and I'm looking forward to buying one. The 2023 colors are holding me up. I need a mako shark fade or darker solid color to pull the trigger. Thank you Matt for making all of your videos. I look forward to watching them.

I’ve never personally expected a motor to be the bigger thing in a CVO. I’ve always thought it was all the loaded aesthetic features leaving want for nothing.

I tossed up between the new 2023 CVO and a new 2022 Orange CVO with the larger front wheel a month ago, in the end a chose the 2022 CVO. I just liked the 21” front wheel look and the colour just popped, it still had the traction control, and I got it for a really good price.
The new 2023 bike is good I’m sure, but there’s more to consider then that’s it’s the latest tech, you’ll never keep up with tech anyway.

Excellent vlog Matt and Nick. I like the in-depth commenting. I'm glad the motor company keeps pushing the boundaries and listens to their customers. I've never had a CVO but ride with three friends that have them in a variety of years. My interest has been reliable and cool (to me) transportation locally and across country with my 94 FXR, 07 FLTR (with over 195K on the original drivetrain), and 14 FLSTC. Keep the great content coming especially the trips.

I own a 2006 FXSTSI (my pride and joy) and a 2022 FLHR. I had never ridden an M8 powered bike until I bought my 22 FLHR this past May. The difference in the technology from the TC88 on a Softail to the M8 on a Touring model is insane. I can only imagine the leap from the 107 M8 to the 23 CVOs. I have been a fan of the CVO line since they were called Screaming Eagle bikes. As a Springer enthusiast, I've thought about buying a 2009 FXSTSSE3, but just never did it. If the 24 CVO line has a better paint scheme (it doesn't have to be wild), I will seriously consider buying a 24 CVO. I had never seen a Coast Glide before this video. Your Coast Glide III is one of the best looking motorcycles I've ever seen. Keep up the awesome work on the bikes and the videos.

That Street Glide is the business. I've never been a fan of the road glide fairing, the new CVO didn't change my mind, still prefer the street glide. I went to get a street glide this last summer but saw an 88 FXRS first and it stole my heart. I'll get the street glide when they do an ST with the inverted forks and that new fairing. I'm not big on stereos on a bike. I have my helmet comms setup, but I'd love a Street glide with a single seat, inverted forks and that new fairing. That combo would just be sexy

Bought a new FLTRXSE in Dark Platinum at the beginning of November. Coming off of a 2017 FLTRXS the one thing I can say is it is a night and day difference. The new platform handles way better in the corners because of the new front end, you notice it is indeed lighter meaning it’s a lot of fun to toss around corners and do low speed maneuvering , and the tech just makes even the previous year seem extremely outdated by comparison. Even if most don’t like the Dark Platinum color the rest of the improvements makes up for it and you actually feel like the price you pay is justifiable compared to previous years where that was debatable.

Good vlog Matt, I'm a little disappointed with the '23 CVO Street and Road Glide paint sets. I have a '22 CVO SG purchased new, last year (my second one) and every color scheme offered for the '22 CVO's was a home run!! I even had a hard time deciding which color scheme to choose from, lol! I appreciate the new suspension, bigger motor and high tech fairing designs but i believe, that HD is moving away from jaw dropping great looks and classic style because of their competition and for the younger demographic. My opinion, for what its worth.

Good conversation y’all. I was able finally test ride one of the new CVOs. It was ok, but wasn’t impressive. I’m a RG rider and think the new fairing is too gaudy. The headlight, turn signal combo is way too big and looks out of place. But that’s just my opinion. When you mentioned the price difference between the new CVOs and the anniversary model….you are basically lying to the people. The new CVOs are dealer marked up over $50k, i checked in multiple states around me and they are all the same. MSRP is a joke conversation. Dealer greed, more than likely. I do like the new infotainment screen. The different ride modes are ok. I think the rain mode would be beneficial more so over the sport mode which i found no use for. Cheers y’all and keep the rubber side down.

I love the 120th Limited CVO. I looked at one here at my local dealer in Indiana. It’s a beautiful machine. If someone is buying a CVO simply for status and exclusivity then they’re buying it for the wrong reasons. They should do their own build if they want a one off bike. The pissing contest is juvenile.

I totally agree with giving bikes other than street glides and road glides the “special” and CVO treatment. There are so many damn street glides and road glides out there, give the CVO and special treatment a break on them for a year or two. I feel like things such as ride modes, locking bags on baggers, and LED lighting all around on every bike, should not be exclusive to high end bikes. Those should come on all bikes from the factory in this age. High end paint and finishes I think should be exclusive. Digital gauges should be offered in all sizes for those who want that functionality. Supersize the RevMax and put it in some softail/touring models. When a primary competitor is doing these things at similar price points or even for a little less, no excuse for these things to not come on more/all bikes.

I had just bought a 2018 Street Glide standard in Matte Grey and traded it for a 2018 CVO Street Glide in Gunship Grey, not sure it was worth the double amount I paid 😳 Shoulda kept the standard and added some upgrades. Same suspension, similar engine and the Boom II stereo ended up being a goat rope. I think $40k is too much for any motorcycle. My 2020 BMW M240i was the same price and there’s a lot more to it than a bike. Just my opinion after owning it for a few years. Great video Matt and Nick.

The appearance of the 110 in 2016/2017 Softails were the phasing out of the TC engine before the M8 (I own the 2016 TC103 High Output Ultra Limited, just before MY17 Touring 107 M8). Same for the 103 High Output upgrade in the Heritage Classic 2016/2017 by the way. The euro 4 emissions were coming up, last opportunity to sell these upgrades with TC engines.
So, the 2022 Softail 117 M8 trickle down (so only for 1 year), up from basically previous CVO114 (all euro5 downgrade already per 2020) was kind of predicting some thing new for 2023 ....... so the 121, 2024 euro5+ ready by the way, so ....... VVT trickle down in 2024 < 121CI ? just maybe for fuel consumption, the M8's could be still OK there.
The 117 (per CVO2018 > std114, upgrade because the first Softails M8 got the 114 then) not just had 3 CI more (2.6%), it also has a different camshaft for 15% (!) more power at negligible torque increase, still very smooth though, the 114 (CVO 2017) vs std107 (CI +6.5%) did not have that.
I have the 2019 CVO Limited 117, last euro4 (the only chrome version of that year, great gurgle sound from the air filter when giving "a bit" of throttle ......), and have no problems with the 117 trickle "down" (not before 2022, so I had my joy), because they went in a sportier chassis anyway (Softail ST), or did not have the CVO amenities (Touring ST).
    Thanks for your discussion ✌.

As a long term customer who has been through the progression as a consumer, starting with a used sportster 20 years ago. Five HDs later I am up to '21 SG special that I bought new. I see the Limited series as a better value, when compared to a CVO model. CVO riders have seemed less aggressive in their riding, but that seems to be changing. For me, the used CVO market is a new niche that allows me to step into the nexus which you have been referring to as they move down to a price point I can live with. I see the new '23 CVO as an opportunity 3-5 years from now. Thanks for a good video and I look forward to more of this kind of content. One thing I noticed you guys didn’t talk about was the new air intake that really is a throw back to the early 80’s. I do not like that intake at all. I get that a big engine needs a lot of air but that thing covers the entire motor. That engine is absolutely beautiful and to hide it like that is a terrible idea. If I were to buy one the first thing I’d do is change it. Great video.

Bought a new Streetglide CVO in 2019 primarily because of the upgraded sound system and larger engine. After a year I poured money into upgrading the sound system (sounded good in the showroom but crappy on the road) and the suspension (stock suspension was crap). I would have saved a lot of money buying a stock Streetglide and modifying the sound system and suspension. I still like the bike (special paint is what makes it unique now) but if I did it again I wouldn’t spend the big bucks on the CVO. I’d customize or wait for the unique features to trickle down.

I traded my 2021 CVO Limited (Bronze Armor) for a 2023 CVO RG (121VVT Dark Platinum). Yes, I was VERY pissed I paid premium for my 117 CVO when they released the other bikes with the same engine. I hear what you’re saying about the Pan America but that’s apples and oranges. As a CVO owner it IS about exclusivity for me. Paying the premium price should come with some perks.
Great topic guys! Thanks for the video.

Do you expect them to NOT give the 121 to the rest of the line going forward? They have literally always moved the cvo engines down to the rest of the model lines. 103, 110, 114, 117, why would you expect that to change now?

    • @TH3G0ODGUY
      @TH3G0ODGUY 6 місяців тому +1

For me its apples and oranges as well, but the analogy needs to be continued further out. I don't care if my apple isn't as easy to peel as my orange, because I eat the skin or cut the apple anyways. This seems like a very heated debate about whether granny smiths are easier to peel than a red delicious, while I'm just wondering why you didnt buy the orange if "peelability" was so important. It seems especially confusing to me when we find out that the difference in how easy one apple is to peel vs another apple is 5-15%. I think I may have gone too far with the apples and oranges 🤣
Its like going into a rolls royce dealership and being upset about which model has which engine, its why the joke is that they always just say that the engine is "adequate" for the job. So long as it has enough power, I care more about it being smooth, having the right character and sound, and with a HD because I can see the engine, I want the engine to look gorgeous. But caring about the displacement seems, I don't know, just kinda low down the list of priorities. Its going to be a slightly quicker 800 pound cruiser. The difference will be less significant than many other changes on the bike.
I think CVO's should have amazing engines, and I don't see a good argument for why they wouldnt have the largest displacement engines HD makes. I think thats good and fine, I just have a hard time being worked up about it because to me its just a number, and its far from the most important thing about the engine to me, let alone the bike. Thanks for watching!

@@Axle-7 I totally expect the motor size to trickle down. But, what they’ve done in the past is move the “needle” at the same time to keep the CVO ahead. What happened when I bought my 21 CVO is they released the same engine on the non-CVO models in the same year. I don’t think that was cool. That’s what frustrated me.

@MattLaidlaw I think 2019 is the last cvo that looked like a cvo to me. In my opinion, you're paying for that more custom look. The single or basic two tones don't differentiate from a base model in my opinion. One of my favorite cvos are probably the 2013 and 2014 cvo road kings. I like the color schemes on those bikes alot, but don't particularly expect another cvo road king anytime soon

I disagree to a degree. The CVO paint schemes have been awesome up until the 23 CVO Road Glide and Street Glide, which are underwhelming. The 23 CVO Road Glide and Street Glide almost feel like they were either rushed out to market and didn't have time for better paint schemes, or they did it this way in order to wow people with the paint schemes on the 24 CVOs.

The new Model year Launch in mid/late january is for a Lot of european customer to late. Our riding season Starts in April. If you ordered in the past years a new Harley, your Delivery Date was often at the end of the season in October or even later. Many Biker switched to BMW or Triumph or other brands.
I and many others spend there Money now, before Christmas or in this year. Tax reasons, available Money and to make shure the new toy ist in late march in the Garage is a reason, that makes it Harder for 🇪🇺 Harley Davidson Sales. I liked the HD September Model Year Preview a Lot more.

Overall, I REALLY LIKE these changes on the newer CVO’s with the new fairings and so forth. There are a few small things which I believe need to be tweaked, but it won’t matter to me because I don’t have that kind of money to lay out on a new bike. I will need to hope some of those improvements make it to the “regular grand touring” models.

My only critique about the newer style touring bikes is the lower fairing delete. I own 2 bikes now, got rid of the two sportsters, just got too old, for lack of a better explanation. I'm going north of 50+ in age. Now I think I'm staying with my Road Glide Ultra, it has those nice lower fairings to keep my knees and toes nice and dry! Also the price totally turns me off. I remember saying in the early 80s "I'm not paying $10,000!" Well I can say that I've had my lion's share of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The Road Glide I own is absolutely perfect for me. So, I guess I'll be fading out soon riding non-stop. It is what it is.
Keep the faith young brothers! Motorcycles are forever, we ain't! Keep the ugly side up!

Now it’s a ridiculously expensive motorcycle that is set up with most the upgrades one would do. The paint schemes are passive compared to what used to be available in the catalog. I kinda liked it the old way.

Sorry, but I don't buy the BS about being happy with the 117 CVO and in the same year the new gen CVOs are out. We all know the reason why the new models were released in the same year - the impact of the leaked photos. The new CVO design is so popular in my MC that folks are now selling their last gen CVOs and those in the market for a tourer are waiting before upgrading. I also find it interesting that in 2023, on a premium product like a CVO, you still have to 'manually' adjust preload and ride modes changes don't automatically/simultaneously change suspension settings to match and no review by anyone on YT has mentioned this. The HD ride mode set-up is so archaic compared to the truly premium EU brands (except for the Pan America - where HD got it right).

I don’t like the new CVOs compared to the older models. I’ve owned 2 CVOs, a 16 and an 18. Both beautiful bikes in my opinion. I hate the Indian looking headlight on the new RG and the color choices weren’t the best. In my opinion the CVOs should look like factory custom bikes. Big motors, big brakes and beautiful paint all blacked out trim or all chromed out, customer choice. The only thing I liked was the new front upside down forks. I passed on a new 23.
