    Hi Debra I must be doing something right as I grow most of these in my garden in Victoria Australia!! Aeonium haworthii was the first succulent I grew as a child and its still growing strong!

      Me too! It grew in my parents' garden in big rounded mounds. At age 5 or 6 I hid a half-eaten can of chocolate frosting in an Aeonium haworthii shrub so my mother wouldn't find it. LOL

      It doesn't kill the plants, just weakens them. They usually bounce back.

    Hi Debra, where do you live? I am in Murrieta and given the extreme heat throughout the summer make growing many of these plants a challenge. I really have no shade, no trees, just lots of sun. I have great success with euphorbias, pedilanthus, barrel cacti, aloe, prickly pear cactus. I see on your website you mention mild conditions and not dessert heat is needed for many plants which of course I dont have here in Murrieta. I have owned at least half of the crassula and echeveria shown on your website yet they in a short time don't look good, either the leaves dry up or get soft and I just cant seem to make them happy be it in a pot or in the ground. I cant seem to get plants such as echeveria ,aeonium to flourish. Those are the plants with so much color and variety that my landscape needs yet along with my other plants they must need much less water or less sun because when set in the same soil, same water drip amount, and exposed to the sun all day as the others, do not respond the same. Can you please suggest what I need to do or which plants to buy that will add color and variety and wont be so frustrating to gage their water needs. Many of my plants are just green and until they bloom they dont have much color variation. I water when the soil is hard and dry (i check before I do so with my finger or a moisture sensor)then after watering them they become mushy the next day (telling me that its too much water) so what do they want? Trying to keep them from burning is a huge challenge and even in the shade the air is very warm and they seem to just look dry, tired, unhealthy and again even a little water and they turn to mush. Is it possible to get these plants to thrive where I live and if so what am I doing wrong? Could you list for me 10 plants (even if they arent the ones I mentioned) that will easily acclimate to my existing landscape, are readily available for purchase nearby and should easily thrive in my specific microclimate? Thank you, Debra!!

      Hi BB, you need far more help than I can give you in a brief reply here, but the good news is many of your questions are answered in my books, videos and website. Basically, your climate is the same as mine, but the difference is shade. Before you do anything else, PLANT TREES.

    Why do the fronds of the bottle palms sometimes have that beautiful, fountain-like appearance and then sometimes they just fold over? I have two in GIGANTIC pots in my yard, about 20 ft apart, so same exposure to sun, wind, etc, but only one has the fronds bending to the point they crease and then sometimes break off. This happens all over the crown, not just at the bottom.

    • @QueenofSucculents
      @QueenofSucculents  3 роки тому

      When you say "fronds" do you mean the leaves or the sprays of flowers?

    • @janetyamashige9573
      @janetyamashige9573 3 роки тому

      Thank you kindly for replying! I mean the leaves. they grow out from the stalk (trunk?) but instead of going up & outward (good example at 4:12) , they grow straight out and then it's like the leaves are too heavy to continue and at about halfway they flop over. Also, it wasn't always like this, this has just happened in the past couple of years. My gardener has no clue what's causing it.
