My mom was definitely not a gardener but she had hens and chicks throughout her yard. We lived in Missouri which has a very harsh winter and lots of snow, and those succulents came back year after year and were so beautiful. Amazing little plant. Thank you for the video!
My mother gave me my first hen and chicks and she bloomed this year about 30 flowers and the hen herself is bigger than my head! I will miss her. Thank you for teaching me so much!

Lol. I understand.. my house is currently overrun by hens and chick and lithops.. now the hens and chicks can go outside, if he wants me to move my lithops then he can sleep outside 😉.. (he actually never complains about my plants, he is amazing)
Luckily we live in florida so we don't get much cold spells for too long. My kalanchoes are turning red tipped which looks amazing and my other cold hardy ones are starting to change their color as well. Thanks for sharing! I love all different succulents. Im always adding to my 50+ plant collection of just succulents. Not to mention the house plants, herbs and vegetables I grown in and around the garden. Its such a great feeling to garden with so many plants. I can't wait to be homesteading most of my own food soon, along with donating a lot of the produce I'm growing to shelters.

Great video. A friend in Ohio wanted to do a desert themed garden. This was quite an unconventional garden for northeast ohio, but I was intrigued by the challenge. He already had some prickly pears growing well, so they provided the established anchor for the garden design. I did get sempervivums and stonecrop sedums to add some variety. But I also think yuccas might be a good fit for this theme that can survive and thrive here.

You can do it! Just start with one thing at a time. If you haven't already, I'd highly recommend starting with my free Succulents for Beginners course. It covers the essentials (the goal being to prevent overwhelm). You can sign up for that here:

Once you start it'll be easy just start with one plant and the next thing you know youll live in a green house. And do not give up, we lose a lot in the beginning, at least I did, because I started with lithops and those are not easy. Talk about a confidence smasher. But start with anything else except for lithops😉
Here in Brazil in the city where I live, the winter time is quite cold and this year my succulents have mold for the first time! And I was looking for succulents that can tolerated better the cold weather! Thanks for the explanation!
Need to build a cover for rain . Your soil is holding to much water. Rollers semps are a little tougher. Golbofoliom

Would love to get some paddle cactus to try outside next year!
Mine spread out so much I would have loved to give some away. I started with a single paddle at a site where they tore down a building and of course, the surrounding landscaping. I takes a little courage, but if you see a neighbor's yard with a bunch of cacti, ring the bell and ask if you may have a leaf (or paddle).

i'm not sure what type of supervivum i have but i can say it's green with red tips and the chicks grow from below on a long stem. i'm guessing it's the first one you talked about. i use to have these in the shade in a concrete birdbath. i've never put them away for the winter because i didn't know much about gardening. my thumb was not anywhere near green. Anyway, we cut down a fruit tree that was infested with wasps and my husband covered the cut tree with a tarp to get the wasps off. My memory issues caused me to forget that my hen and chicks were next to the tree and consequently got covered as well. This spring while i was doing spring yard clean up, i moved the tarp and saw the concrete birdbath upside down (likely from heavy snow). i turned it over and there were a ton of healthy beautiful hen and chicks growing. i panicked, picked them up and put them in a container on a table outside. Well.... it rained for days and they got soaked and started getting slimey near their bottom leaves. they were in such a tight ball, all i could think of doing with cutting their stems to separate them, dry them for a couple days and then repot them. I brought a couple in my house and tried to be creative with them and now they are opening wayyyy up and losing their "rose" shape. They are in a west facing window.. perhaps they are these cold hardy kind and are too hot?? i'm afraid they are going to die..
Sempervivum don't do well indoors, so placing them outside, on a porch or deck, would be better for them.

This makes me so happy, but also so scared to leave my babies out all winter. We are in the high desert of Nevada, in Zone 6b. My poor husband cringes when the cool fall nights start giving way to freezing temperatures in which I haul all my frost tender plants into various locations in our home to overwinter.

I've been looking everywhere on the internet about bear paw succulent care but definitely not very helpful information :(

Thank you so much! Just saw your reply. Think I have Dea now . I’ll have to double check . I went on a buying spree and got way too many. I couldn’t help it . 🤣. Got most planted already in pots . But I have about 20 more to get potted . I have a bunch that are in biodegradable pots . They need planted too . But the weather here suddenly got really cold . I may just leave them in those pots , huddled together in 10x20 trays . Then pot in summer . Do you think that’s a good idea ? I want to remove the nursery soil ( probably peat ) off before potting and I don’t want to stress them that way with the freezing night temps .
I'm very curious as to whether they withstand the Scottish weather, constantly cold but we do get sunshine sometime 😆
They might do really well there! We have some UK growers that have had success with them.

I love sempervivums! This is my first winter and I’ve spent so much money on my newfound hobby, I want to take good are of my babies. I’m in an apartment so I don’t have a garden or backyard- but I did buy a grow light for other plants and leaf propagation. So would time under a grow light help or hurt sempervivum?
Most sempervivums do best when grown outdoors. If you are growing it indoor you will want to use a grow light, however for best results outdoor is most suitable.

Hi, I’m new to succulent growing. I leave in zone 8b. Recently I took all my plants indoors along with the the hens and chicks. I just watched your video and I feel like putting those sempervivums outdoors. Please give me some advice how to put them back. (And I’ve covered patio so it won’t get much rain or snow)
You can just move it outside and it will be fine. They can tolerate really low temperatures and even be covered with snow and be fine :)
So beautiful, I hope someone could give me succulents because here in our place succulents were too expensive and only few were selling. And I can't also afford online, Im still a student and Im not rich. I really want to collect succulents cause I feel at peace when im around with them.
I have a hard time raising Hens and Chicks plant. Maybe they grow better outside.
The nerd dark for a month or so. It's a nap for them.Then put under light little at a time👍

What do you do with full time inside hens and chicks that will mimic the needed cold weather dorm period you mentioned? Should I put them outside for a northern (Ohio) winter?
Succulents that are grown indoors won't reach a true dormancy. Sempervivums are cold hardy, and grow best outdoors. When they're grown indoors, they tend to stretch and don't thrive.

I live on the coast of Massachusetts. We get a lot of humidity and rainfall is variable. Should I keep my succulents indoors?
If your succulents are cold-hardy and are in well-draining soil, you can keep them outdoors. :)
This is great information, thank you! I just bought a house in the pacific nw (so lots of rain) do these same plants all do well in a rainy environment? Also, If I'm wanting to plant a succulent garden in my front flower box can I do that now that its fall, or should I wait until spring to plant? Thank you, I've definitely subscribed!
You can plant now and it should be fine 😊
As far as rain goes, these don't generally like a lot of water. Make sure they are in a really well draining soil and avoid watering if you know rain is coming up. They could be super low maintenance because the rain will do all the work 😊
If they are in the ground, try creating a mound of soil rather than having them on a flat area. Just pile up a lot of soil and cover with succulents. The hill/mound will help water flow away from the roots and help with "drainage".
Just keep an eye out for signs of rot and make sure they stay as dry a possible through the winter.

@@jenniferlynch4420 yes! I would love to do that. We're hoping to have a guide to different climates. The plants you can grow well really varies from place to place.
I agree. We get so much rain. Over here in Portland Oregon. The rain is almost constant. Is it ok to plant now? Also should I cover some times to cut back from the rain?
@@leslielove3819 Planting now should be fine. Just try to keep things dry for a day or two after planting and make sure you're using a reeeeeally well draining soil. After that, you'll just have to keep an eye on things. Since you likely have fairly high humidity most days, you probably won't need to water very frequently.
Do cold hardy succulents use the same type of fertilizer? Also if I want to grow these on my covered porch (we have an apartment) how often should I water them?
Yes, you can use the same type of fertilizer for cold hardy succulents. Water whenever the soil is completely dry.
What’s the chubby , stacked , colorful sedum species that is up against the sempervivum to the bottom left ? Thank you ! I’m hooked on cold hardy succulents. Especially sempervivum. But I’d love some chubby sedums . Also . Does sedum dasyphyllum lose its leaves in winter ? I’m scared to leave mine outside right now because it’s become so gorgeous . Can you tell us the time stamp you saw thee Sedum at? That will help us ID it for you 😊
Sedum dasyphyllum is a Zone 7a (Minimum 0° F | -17.8° C) . It doesn't lose leaves, but if it gets too cold it can die. Learn more here:

Always received great information on succulents through your channel. Please answer my Querrey I had purchased Dwarf Aeonium online, when I received them they were looking sad i thought it's travel stressed I potted them in gritty mix they didn't recover I checked it's roots they weren't healthy at all so i chopped all it's stems and potted into sphagnum moss &Cocopeat mixture even after three weeks they're still stressed with no sign of new roots. How do i make them root? And make them happy. Recently I ve Temperature ranging 23°c in day and at night it's around 19°c . What would you suggest?
Roots can take some time to grow. The best thing to do is to plant them in well-draining soil (learn more about that here: succulentsandsunshine.com/yt-mainsoil ), water whenever the soil is completely dry, and continue on as you have done.
The temperature range they are in is great! If you're growing indoors, be sure they're under a grow light. Aeoniums are summer dormant, so if you are in the Southern Hemisphere, they may be dormant and not growing at the moment.

My hand and chick's doesn't have baby yet ,but its going taller and it cover the bottoms , its not getting flat, what would I do?
The leaves will actually flatten when they aren't getting enough sunlight. So you don't want it to flatten out. You can read more about the hens and chicks sempervivum here:

There are some Opuntias that can survive Zone 5 or Zone 6 temperatures :)

You'd want to check the individual varieties and see what their lowest rated temperatures are as it can differ. My understanding is Sempervivum hueffelii are the most cold tolerant.

I don't get it, succulent were originally from dessert but it dies due to our heat climate..
