@@legoleviathan6411 *Duke. Regardless of gender the British Monarch is always referred to as the Duke of Normandy, just like she is also the "Lord" of Man.
An interesting fact about Northern Ireland, the International Olympic Committee recognizes Northern Ireland athletes as competitors from Ireland. The United Kingdom does not sponsor an Olympic committe, however, athletes from England, Scotland and Wales compete as Great Britain. To make it even more confusing, FIFA, the international governing body of World Cup Soccer, recognizes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as independent nations and each competes individually in international soccer tournaments, with the exception of the Olympics, where England, Scotland and Wales must merge soccer athletes to form a Great Britain team and soccer players from Northern Ireland compete with the Olympic soccer team from Ireland.
a little problem: Xinjiang is not the only autonomous territory in China… and in fact, there are 5 province-level autonomous territories, which includes Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Tibet, Guangxi, Ningxia. all of those territories are governed by the locals from the primary local ethnic group, for instance, xinjiang is indeed governed by Uyghurs, tibet by Tibetans, Mongolia by the Mongolians, Guangxi by the Zhuang population, and Ningxia by the Hui population (which is basically sinisized muslims) however, the idea behind autonomy in those territories are based on including those minority population into the local and central government. other than that, it is just a province: it executes policies from beijing, it does not have local armed forces, it shares the same market and currency, population moving across provinces are not limited unlike hongkong.
in the Chinese political hierarchy, the CCP Secretary (or the party chief of Chinese Communist Party) is the highest ranking official in each of those autonomous regions. So, they may have an ethnic minority holding the position of the region chairman, but the ultimate authority is still in the hands of the party leaders, who are always Han Chinese and only serve the interests of Beijing. I'd be skeptical to say that these regions are governed by their own people.
@@Bohemian0522 first, the vid mentioned Xinjiang, thus it would be lame and incorrect to not mention other regions also, i did mention they function like a province and execute orders from Beijing, so their is no need for your skeptical thoughts… however, it is still worth mentioning that ccp actually has a large number of ethnic minorities in its membership, and within the poliburo… gosh why you guys cared for ethnic minorities so much… you guys probably never even talked to them…
indeed, Macau is among the most interesting out there, having been one of the earliest European colonies in East Asia. It's long history deserves its own section in the video.
There are also some entities that are "kind of" autonomous regions : - the Sahrawi People's Democratic Republic (a slice of desert) - the Palestinian authority - the northern Cyprus Turkish Republic - Artsakh/Nagorno Karabakh - Transdnistria - South Ossetia - Abkhazia - LPR/DPR
Actually its the opposite. If you are actually autonomous, your internal affairs are your own. But puppet autonomous regions are a convenient way to suppress, as people in autonomous regions cannot take part in the political discourse of the central government. This makes Xinjiang for example not actually autonomous, as the central government DOES intervene (killing and incarcerating people), but Jersey for example is self governing, therefore actually autonomous.
you know, those countries who call themselves "people's republic", or "democratic people's republic", are often the worst offenders of human rights and freedom. How ironic, the more it want to emphasise it being autonomous or democratic, the less they actually are.
Thank you for mentioning China's Human RIghts violations in Xinjiang, which is supposed to be the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, where China is working hard now to commit culturecide, trying to extinguish the Uyghur language and culture. Similar things are going on in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, where China is trying to remove the Mongolian language as the teaching language in schools and from libraries.

Great video, but I would liken Hong Kong's chief executive more to a colonial governor of sorts. The position isn't elected via universal suffrage, which was what sparked the Occupy Central protests in 2014
agreed. A prime minister is the leader of the legislature, which is democratically elected. The Hong Kong chief executive is not a member of the legislature, neither is he/she elected by the general population.
It seems a big part of the suffrage news were completely ignored by the world. In 2015, Hong Kong was to vote for a suffrage in 2017 by all the residents of Hong Kong. The only thing is that, the candidates must be approved by a 1200 members Electorate Council. However, due to the pan-democrats (the rioters) opposition, the suffrage failed to pass the legislative council. From then, the pan-democrats went on a more confrontational approach. Many Hong Kongers were of the view that they were calculative and acted as agent of foreign influence, because if they were genuine in their fight for universal suffrage, they could have voted for and competed in the 2017 suffrage, and proceed to gain more political mileage.
Hong Kong is no longer an autonomous region. FYI, Tibet and East Turkistan are not autonomous regions either. China calls them SARs, but that is a big lie.
