    One reason i swap from Wahoo to garmin is the accident detection. When i ride alone and had a fall, it detect a fall and can call my close one. THis is one useful feature that i love about garmin other than the training plans. If wahoo have such detection, i would jump back to wahoo.

    Thank you for a great comparison. I have also played around with both 1030 plus and a Bolt V2. Most people will say apple to oranges, but I say both are designed for the same purpose. I absolutely agree that the Garmin is better for navigation, but with a small caveat - I love how the Wahoo adds the navigation cue to the existing screen keeping all the fields visible, while the Garmin changes the screen and you have to touch it in order to make it go away, if you can't wait for the turn and that happens a lot. Another thing that I like about the Wahoo, that I have not heard anyone mentioning, is that the device registers any number of the "page" button presses without waiting for the page to change, so if you know that the page you want to see is 3 pages away, you just triple-click it. With the Garmin, you have to wait for each screen to show (and it is slower) in order to swipe again. I find it that it is much easier to flip though the pages this way. I think this is an important aspect of the general use experience. For me, the Garmin is a better device as a whole, but my main reason to switch to the Wahoo is absolutely the screen. I can actually see what I want / need to see much better on that small display due to the quality of the screen and the use of colors. I must say, though, that the 830 has a much better screen than the 1030 plus. I think all those talks about the ease of set up are petty and even not true. Other than the fact that the Garmin is very easy to set up, set up is done once and silly to consider it as a factor of which computer to buy.

      Great additions! I did notice the ability to click through screens on the Wahoo, I also noticed you can never go back to a previous screen on the Wahoo, you have to press the page button and go forward through all of the pages until you get back to the one you want, but you can go back to a previous page on the Garmin. I do agree that the unobtrusive navigation prompts are very helpful on the Wahoo, I wish Garmin would adopt that too. All good things to consider. Thanks for your thoughts!

      Navigation can be customized on Garmin , display as text or as Map, If you select Text then navigation prompts will happen in the current screen (without actually show the map) , if this is what you are referring to Wahoo. I agree with better display and chevrons on Wahoo
      Also I would mention another functionality , sharp bend turn notification on Garmin that is working independent from route

    I think I will buy the Wahoo Elemnt Roam since it is an upgrade of the Bolt. Like you, I will likely also get the Garmin. I do not yet have power pedals, so that is data I am not yet tracking ($750+ just to buy a pair of pedals). (I am a casual rider and do not compete (I am 64 yrs this year), but just like to track data since it is fun and keeps me engaged in the whole bicycling process. This was a helpful review. Thanks!

    Nice review, thanks but I feel its missing a whole section on the maps. Wahoo might be simpler for day to day use and good on-road but trail maps for off road are severely lacking. Only way you're navigating an unfamiliar MTB trail is by pre-loading a route. With the Garmin and Trailforks pre-loaded you have a pretty good base layer without needing a route.
    I'd also be curious to see how well the zoom in/out works on an 830. The Bolt makes this easy.

    • @utahcanyoncycling
      @utahcanyoncycling  2 роки тому

      Good point, I ride 90% road and 10% off road, so I didn't focus on trail forks much, but you are correct, 830 with the trail forks was much much better than the Wahoo off road.
      Zoom in and out is pretty easy on the 830 too, maybe a "touch" harder than the Wahoo.

    This video helped me to solidify my buying decision. Coming from Garmin edge 130 plus and the edge 530 suddenly stopped working. Navigation was an issue for me. I will put in the address or meetup point and that did a poor job with route recalculation where I end up lost. Planned routes are decent as you have mentioned. My friends say the Wahoo does a better job navigating but according to your video here it is not the case. Garmin does a colorful graphic where you can see your heart rate zones colors and power colors just like Zwift. That could do the same job as the Wahoo light indicators. I find crash detection , and feed detection and alarm 🚨 detection useful on the edge unit not available on the Wahoo. Feed detection is base in heart rate, ergo meter and Garmin calculates when to fuel with water 💧 or calories for the ride which is helpful for races. It has steep curve detection warning ⚠️that helps me on new terrain or races to adjust my speed ahead of time. Staying with team Garmin here.

    13:20. On the Garmin you also have to save a ride as a course, before you can select and ride / navigate it. You must have saved the ride as a course before, otherwise it wouldn’t show up under “saved courses”.

    I think the visibility/clarity of the screen in bright light (or changing light) is way better on Wahoo. I.e. it can't be overstated how much better. I got Edge 830 after using Wahoo for a long time and I cannot get used to how bad the screen is. I literally can't see much on the map (navigation screen) when riding in the forest or bright daylight.

    • @utahcanyoncycling
      @utahcanyoncycling  Рік тому

      Hmm, I haven't had that issue. Try checking your screen settings, especially the auto brightness and backlight settings. Hopefully that will help!

      @@utahcanyoncycling screen is on full blast for mtb. I will revisit the settings just to be sure, but when you're riding in the forest or in and out of trees, auto-brightness is too slow to change. I think the issue is the type of display. Wahoo's monochromatic-ish display (and maybe mat screen finish?) work very well. I do admit though that I mostly care about display when I'm on the navigation screen, and garmin navigation+maps is very fancy and great at home, but once the handlebars start shaking, light starts changing, and you're going downhill on an mtb, there is no way you can glance at it in split second and see which way to go at an upcoming fork in the trail. Wahoo with its chevrons, big arrow for your position, and visible display works much better. Tbf, on a road bike, I don't care which device I use, both are good enough.

    • @cebruthius
      @cebruthius 11 місяців тому

      @@utahcanyoncyclingIt isn't a matter of screen settings. The Wahoo displays are a completely different technology: transflective TFT. The difference is that while the Garmin has to put on the backlight full blast to compete with the sun, the Wahoo displays have the backlight *turned off* because it just reflects the energy of the sun.

    I'm just using my previous cell phone I upgraded with a new one. Miles ahead of all those bike computers. Battery life is about 4 hours with full GPS and screen ON. For longer rides I just strap a small power bank to handlebars. Been looking at bike computers for years but still they look like they stuck in a stone age compared even to the cheapest smartphone.

    • @utahcanyoncycling
      @utahcanyoncycling  2 роки тому +4

      Phones work great for short rides, but you risk breaking a $1000+ phone in a crash vs a $300 bike computer which likely won't break or go flying into the road. For me a phone, even with a battery pack, just doesn't last long enough. I've done rides over 10 hours and my phone dies well before my Garmin/Wahoo. A smartphone is a great alternative, but maybe not a replacement.

    Best review/Versus that I have seen on UA-cam in General so 👍🏻 for this. I had Wahoo Roam and Bolt V1. Few points, with 1040 they had implement more granular colors for the climb pro, better acuracy (way better than 830) and from what I have understand little bit better logic behind off course navigation (did not manage to test this one) . What you did not mention is that with Wahoo , there is no cloud backup for the setup , meaning if you wipe your device, or if you buy new model, to have pages and sensors migrated , also with Wahoo you have only one direction for swiping pages, also there is no "lap by position" , also there are some bugs pending from more that one year. Garmin have the bug with displaying % field with big delay. Workouts are better displayed and easy to follow on Wahoo, but the lack their own ecosystem. Also I remember that autopause is annoying on wahoo. I dont know if on wahoo varia is also pairing light or just the radar
    You can try another video, to have both devices and follow one route, also try to deviate from the course ans see what is happening

    • @utahcanyoncycling
      @utahcanyoncycling  2 роки тому +1

      Great additional details! For the Varia paired to the Wahoo, it is only a radar connection, not a light connection so you have no control over the light, but you will see approaching cars with the radar.

    • @krazyeone
      @krazyeone 2 роки тому

      @@utahcanyoncycling hmmm On Garmin computers , Varia and light are creating a network , when a car approach you are notified on your computer display but in the same time light pattern is changing in order to make the driver more aware .If you pair with Wahoo, then you lose this functionality as I understand there is no connection/logic between radar and the light

    • @utahcanyoncycling
      @utahcanyoncycling  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, that's correct, you also can't turn off the light, adjust flash patterns, or set it to radar only (no light) from the Wahoo. You can do that from the Garmin with the light network. The Wahoo will pair with the Varia, but it won't unlock any of the extra functionality beyond the basic radar function.

    • @krazyeone
      @krazyeone 2 роки тому

      @@utahcanyoncycling clear , what I am trying to say is that many people don't know that radar pairing , not means only the displaying the Radar on the device, and the dots , but if you have one car behind , radar is alerting that car by changing the light pattern , and for me this is the greatest functionality .

    I find these differences 1) AUTO-STOP The Garmin stops when you stop, unlike the Wahoo which takes about 3 secs after you stop. This messes with ave speed 2) HR DROP OUTS Wahoo, will drop your Wahoo heart rate monitor if you go into inside a café for a pit-stop. No way to re-connect mid-ride (Polar H10 not dropped) 3) Unlike Garmin the top metric e.g. 'speed' is huge with all others a bit small if more than 2. I'd like to see more balance options like Garmin screens allow. 4) The Wahoo screen is clear in all light, no so the Garmin 530.

But I am still thinking about the Garmin 830. what to do????????????? I have really liked my 830, most of those connection bugs you mentioned haven't been an issue for me when paired to my iPhone 11, and I've never lost a ride. The newer edge devices have a unique feature where even if the device crashes (hasn't happened to me yet), it will reboot with all of your ride up to that point saved so you can just press resume and keep going, it won't discard your ride like older devices.
      Garmin learning curve is steeper. If you aren't worried about training or racing and just want an easy computer, then I'd go for the Wahoo. The caveat being if you want to use navigation, or fine tune and analyze your metrics a lot then go for the Garmin.
