      I have been using the new 530 for a few days of mtb riding now. Today it's GPS was so inaccurate multiple times. I had uploaded a pre-determined route from trailforks and the Edge 530 was telling me i was hundreds of meters off track at times, or it would drift hundreds of meters STRAIGHT down the mountain and then curl me back to the position it was at before. Weird navigation, was almost useless as a way of navigation. Also it effected the location of the trailforks app on my phone. first time The Trailforks app on my phone was ever that inaccurate on these trails, but first time I used both the app and the garmin edge in contention on these said trails. Thinking I will return it. However everything seams to be working perfectly fine on city roads (Navigation etc)

      I second this request. I've had my 830 for 3 weeks now, and have yet to successfully navigate an MTB course I created from Trailforks or Garmin Connect for example. I can't make it tell me where to turn when I get to a fork (Turn guidance is on). Worse, it keeps telling me to turn on every bend in the trail, and mtb trails are full of bends. LOL.

    Thanks for showing some clear benefits over the 1030. Now I am 100% sure I made the right choice with the 830. The larger screen has never worked for me on the 1000. Its hard to pick out fields when you are moving along and I use a Varia Vision anyway as an extra display (I have impaired hearing so the heads up radar display is my most appreciated feature of all!).

    Hi Clint, very good video. Thank you. I would like to mention that the Pre-climb functionality is not working as precise as expected. Some climbs are not identified as climbs - some steep climbs are missing at all. Compared to the Fenix 5 the functionalities are very limited as well. There is room for improvements for Garmin. Again, thank you for this consideration of the 830 in this earl stage after market disclosure. 2019_06_28, Cheers Ralf

      Yes. The battery life is around 15 hours but you can get an external battery pack (called Garmin Charge Power Pack) to clip on the back of the Garmin which extends the battery by an additional 24 hours.

    I like the video overview. I am trying to decide between the Wahoo Roam and this one. I've had horrible experience with Garmin in past so just wondering how their software bugs and fixes have been with this? Usually they release a model without all the kinks worked out and then all the new adopters are the beta-testers more or less for the first year. Was hoping that wasn't the product cycle approach taken with this new iteration now that Wahoo is a serious contender to their marketshare.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  5 років тому

      The software is definitely getting more refined. I've had issues in the past with bugs on older devices, but the 830 seems to be pretty solid. No matter what electronic device you're always going to get some glitches here and there. But I would think you're going to be pretty happy with the 830.

      To me it actually seems like the 1030 has a longer battery life. I still like the 1030 for my gravel bike since you can display so much data on the screen. For mountain biking I would choose the 830 for gravel and road I would choose a 1030.

      I love the amount of screen real estate of the 1030 but 830 is fine. Keep in mind if you also want to put this on a mountain bike I would definitely go with the 830, as the 1030 is so big it moves around unless you put it on an out front mount or a top mount

    Never used a bike computer. Yesterday I rode a new area with trails out in the wilderness. I found myself pulling out my Iphone using Trailforks every 5-10 mins to ensure I was heading in the right direction. If someone has no interested the training features of a Garmin would it be nuts to use an old Iphone 5S as my "trail computer". I would use a handlebar/stem mount to hold the phone. Would this work or does the Garmin do a better job for GPS/Trail locator?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  5 років тому +1

      For Navigation, where the Garmin excels is planning a route and then follow it.. Also you get close to 20 hours of battery life which will never get out of a phone keeping the screen on. That being said, the map will not be as detailed as it is on the trail forks app on your phone.

    Hi. I can't seem to find information about a following issue. I am thinking between the Wahoo Bolt V2 and Garmin 830. With the Wahoo it is all clear, since I have the V1. But I don't know if the following is possible with the Edge 830.
    Lets say I am navigating with a pre-loaded course onto 830. But half way through I decide to change the route, and need to get off the planned (course) track to get to one place. As I have read, I cannot upload new courses to 530/830 from a phone/app while an activity is in progress. But what if I select an address/POI or even a point on a map during an activity and selected course already? Will this work? Won't the current activity stop/end ?? Thnx

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  2 роки тому +2

      I'm pretty sure you're going to have to stop the current route and then load another one that you already have saved on your phone. These devices work by planning a route in advance versus a GPS where you can program an address and navigate to it. In those cases it would be better off to get a phone mount and just use your phone.

And if you change course during navigation it should be able to recalculate not just to go back on track from the point of deviation but also to go on finding a variant track, like outdoor apps. This the same question I am wondering and asking on you tube and reading reviews it is what I found. @@keaty1984 to be honest I'm not really sure. I have not looked into it. But you can put the trail forks app on your 830. It's sort of helpful at times but obviously you can't plan a ride on it.

    I rather have the "washed out " version than I blind eying screen the softer is better for the eyes than brighter btw satellite is also fast enough the 1030 works with 3 overlay maps so yes maybe a little slower but the gps is spot on also nagivatie spot on when you ride a tourride and you decide to ride it again also that is spot on

    just bought edge 130 which is on much better price point imo. 530 and 830 are just way too expensive

    Yes, Trailforks is great. But one I’ll never use is that stupid Strava crap. WTF is that?

    Strava live segments...how do I just see the KOM. I don’t care about the last time I did it the last follower that did it my PR I just want to see the KOM. No other nonsense. Strava live Segments on the 520 was simple. This 830 is just stupid.

      Phones work for some people, but I would not trust putting my phone on the handlebar for a rough mountain bike ride. Also the screen would only lasts a couple hours in bright sunlight. Finally, if you're going to use a heart rate monitor, power meter... a Garmin or Wahoo head unit is the way to go.

    The only thing I don't like about bike computers is their interface, it always looks so outdated and unresponsive compared to other mobile devices we have nowadays, why?

      Different screen technology. Your phone would last 3 hours in bright sunlight. A Garmin can last up to 20 hours constantly on.
