Running a marathon is hard enough, but doing it while struggling with numerous injuries made John Akhwari an Olympic Games legend in 1968. He said, "My country did not send me 5,000 miles to start the race; they sent me 5,000 miles to finish the race."

Just for the record, most marathon runners would love to finish in 3H25...
Douger Rohmer I was gonna say! It took me 4 and a half hours to run a marathon and I didn’t have to stop for 1st aid! It is amazing how fast those elite runners are. His injured run is still faster than my slow jog lol
3.25 is a respectable time for most runners without injury
"Finish ish otherwise never starshish"
Someone put that on a shirt please.
Hahahahahaa good idea, that would be sick
Лазар Антић ikr
Лазар Антић lol
🤣🤣🤣😂
Why is this so funny
Finish ish start ish
Lmfaooooo I came to comment this
Whats her nationality?
She can’t say it lol
@@pejaaa_lxxvi Maybe, FINNISH?
@@pejaaa_lxxvi
or TURKISH?
“If you start doing something, finish ish (FINNISH?). Otherwise, never start ish (sTURKISH?)”
He wasn't a loser.He never quit.
Never give up...never quit...for me this is Olympic spirit.
But nowadays athletes like Simone Biles are celebrated for quitting
I'm in tears, this is beautiful story about the human spirit ☺️
He's an absolute ambassador of 'Sportsmenship'.✌️
I burst into tears while watching this. The true demonstration of determination, so inspirational!
It is one of the strongest moments in the Olympics... definitely not strange!
True!! wish they change it as strongest instead of strangest
She can’t say it.
Or was ish just me.
Lesson: always finishish what you startish
Great respect for this great runner, taking endurance and perseverance to another level. Enjoying this now 2021.
Unrelated but the title immediately reminds me of Steven Bradbury's 'accidental' gold medal
seriously
My dad always told me this story. It's nice to see him given the credit he deserves
As grown as i am i couldn't control my tears😭 while watching this. This is truly inspirational...
What a trooper. Props to this man.
Why are all strange moments related to Mexico 1968?
It's a huge coincidence to say the least.
She said it, Mexico city is one of the highest in altitude. More altitude = less oxygen. I think it is like -25% less than in sea level for Mexico city.
Why did this video end with the line it was "one of the strangest" moments of the Olympics? What's strange about courage, determination, and proudly representing your country?
yeah found the use of words really weird. courage, determination and pushing your body to the limits even though you're absolutely toasted and clearly in pain is the pinnacle of what the Olympics are about.
WHY IS IT PRONOUNCED AS ISH?
I think the narrator might had struggled to get movie tickets to the movie 'IT'!!!
The captions don’t match the audio
Will Conway i think it’s just yu
So inspiring story 😍😍😍 finished the race.
what determination♥️♥️
wat commitment♥️♥️
Stephen akhwari 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Akhwari:*breaks legs*
Also Akhwari: I will finish the race by bandaging it!!
Great subtitles
Wow! Never thought somebody coming last would make you tearful
Still faster then I could run a marathon
Truly Inspirational
I wish I was born then to cheer him on!!!!
such high respect 👏
Literally athletes/sports is just crazy, you have to challenge yourself where you know you can make it but you still try...
I love the spirit !
Respect!!!
I’m surprised they can have this determination
The irony is that ---> He came in last but did not finished last.
His final ranking was 57th place out of 75 total participants for that race. He is the last among of 57 participants who completed the race AND....
certainly not last in final ranking when....there's 18 more behind him that went into gutter. (bowling)
When someone go beyond win and lose...This kind of stories emerges.
4:15 finishish otherwise never startishish 😂
hope the commentator didnt get a stroke mid commentating
3H25 in this condition???? i cant even do it in 4 H
He was determined to do that! And he did that!
The subtitles don't match the audio. Like if they should be fixed.
Please make a Video about Sri Lankan Runner Ranatunge Karunananda who Didn't gave up ending the race in 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo even the race was finish long ago.
Why re upload??
Legend
Respect
Kazi iendelee
Nice story
永不言弃,坚韧不拔。一个运动员是否优秀的体现。
Don't know whether the tears are flowing because of the story or the narratorish
This story is very comparable to what happened to Petra Majdič. If you have never heard of her story look it up its incredible
Not really sure how seeing a world class runner refusing to drop out of their race qualifies as "one of the strangest" sights, but okay...
Don't quit ..finish the race!
Lovely narration, she is charming
Parents didnt tell him that, and thats for sure 😂
Pierre Coubertin Medal =)
3 hours something, im like bruh, I do 2km in 3 hours xD
Really,😁😁😁
4:11 his parents told him what???
tali koyu
If you start something finish ish
I couldn’t even do 3:25 when I was 19!
The subtitles they are wrong!
Just like manteo Mitchell, he broke his leg 100m away from the finish, but he tried
Русские субтитры не соответствуют видео....про фигурное катание рассказывается
A moment of strength, not at all strange.
This was reuploaded
Marathon!
Now, we no longer are witnesses of such exploits because: "CUT, COMMERCIAL BREAK"
Did he Finnish fish or starfish? Does anyone know?
2:00 Wait, how does high altitude contribute to high jumps and sprints?
It was probably just a description of Mexico City. Plus the high altitude wasnt as gruelling to the higher jumpers and sprinters as it was to the marathon runners.
Not sure how it effects sprints, but it definitely does with jumps.
eddie the eagle finished last , and he was a huge hero .
He wasn't a loser.hes probably a greater winner than anyone else in that race
I thought the most famous loser was eddie the eagle
Eddie was famous, but he was just doing it for laughs. The gallantry, honor, and valor of John Stephen Akwhari far surpasses Eddie.
YESS
This is ridiculous.
Woods
Finish ishhhh Startishhhh
great olympic moment, just in Mexico.
TheBest!
Annie Atleet
Getting medical aid results in disqualification right? You only said it. You, the olympics.
This is late but stop making fun of her accent
How do you avoid getting a woman pregnant?
Pull Oush.
But my mum said...whenever you start something, FINISH ISH!!
@@Kashados your mum did not know where you would apply her teaching
@@avijitmishra1936 but she right tho...
if he (our dad) not finish ish, we are not here
@@rotua98 this ish true
I respect the fortitude but he should have stopped, could have caused himself further serious injury.
As a world class athlete , he was well aware of that. But had he stopped Midway we wouldve never heard about him, heck even if he won the race it wouldn't matter as much because what he did was truly inspirational .
Just curious
Where does this accent comes from?
Roberto it's either Irish or Welsh
Ireland
welsh i guess
WHY CANT SHE SAY IT
Irish accent bro
U mean STRONGEST
startish
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Give moi a prize
I'm sorry but I can't catch what the narrator saying.. :(
Waw
Someone should show this video to Simone Biles. He represented his team better by finishing last than she did finishing in second place.
The Finnish ish finishing the race
mmmm yeeeeeeeeee
Noice
She pronounced the 'ate' and 'it' as 'ashe' and 'ish'. What MTI is that ?
First comment
People thinking she can't speak it, just listen she has said it a lot of places. She was trying to mock the accent of his country. Such a pity.
Nice story bad narrator.
The nappy bookcase unfortunately sail because rule cellularly increase among a tightfisted certification. puzzling, next home
The amazing tabletop notably argue because methane canonically offer without a difficult lunch. spiritual, brawny double
She can't say "it" properly
