I'm five minutes into this. She is a awesome teacher. It is refreshing to hear from people who just are able to communicate.
Fabulous video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is the first Beaducation video I have seen and I must say it was awesome. I took a four day silversmithing class and traveled several hours to do so but I didn't learn the whys and hows of soldering as I did from this video. Keep up the good work. Your video is very much appreciated!!
Wow, this is so great to know. Thanks so much for taking the time to write to us. I am so glad we are able to help you :)
Don't worry about the length of your classes.. this was so helpful. Every minute of it was instructional and helped me greatly! Thank you so much! I think the paste solder is going to be so much easier for me. Thank you!
+cambria Andersen We are so glad to hear that :) Thank you for your feedback and maybe check out our new class on chainmail :) You may love it! bit.ly/1VTpldJ

This was brilliant - thanks so much. Ive been scared of soldering but you made it so simple with lots of other tricks and tips along the way
she has a real gift as a teacher! the best I have seen so far..thanks for making the video
+Peggysue661 Thank you! What nice feedback to get :) We hope you have a fantastic day!
Superb video just amazing. Still having a hard time believing such an amazing tutorial is free. Thank you very much
Lots of really good tips, and well presented. Thanks for sharing your skills and experience.
Thank you so much. Glad it was helpful!
This is a really great video. I don't usually leave any negative comments but I really think if you aren't aware, you would appreciate knowing that you say "um" more times than I could even count. I'm mentioning it only because it became somewhat distracting. Other than that, this is a wonderful video with a lot of great tips. Thank you
Thank you Sharon. We appreciate the feedback :)
Curse you UA-cam! Why did you show this to me randomly after a video I was watching? Now I need to start doing this! What an awesome tutorial! Totally amazing. I need this new hobby in my life… just don’t tell my husband!
You should!
I appreciate this film, but since I am self teaching as well.. over the last year, I do believe that teaching traditional soldering with cutting the pallions, and placing them properly, would be more beneficial for a newbie. Because it matters even more where the torch placement is, and learning not to take to long, because of carbon building up... which then nothing will flow. The paste heats so fast, that it's nothing at all like cutting solder pallions, and correctly placing them. And learning how to draw it through the join. I think you always seem to use paste. Seems a lot of clean up too, on the jump rings with paste. As you say, it goes everywhere. Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback. We have a handful of classes where we solder with pallions (just released one today). I think it comes down to personal preference.
What a fantastic lesson...! I got more out of this than even the class I took! Thank you so much, now I can go have some more fun.
Learned a lot from this . . . thanks. The only suggestion I have for the future is to cut the length of the video in half.
I sped it up - it was perfect!
I loved the video soo looking forward to learning more from you and sharing my journey. Thank you very much.
I love so much tutorial

Easily the best tutorial that can be found here on soldering. I am still processing all the information. There is one thing that I would like a bit more info about: the tumbling process. I don’t really know what it means or how it’s done. Is there anywhere I can find more info on that?

Your great! Thank you!? I feel glorious now and READY!
Brilliant very helpful, I enjoyed watching the programme. I found you very clear to understand. It was so relaxing and very informative. Thank you very much.
Great video, very informative. Question..I am trying to solder two pieces of stainless steel silverware together, what solder would you recommend? Thanks so very much!
Sorry we don't have experience soldering stainless. I am sure there are some tutorials out there on the subject :)
Very helpful! I was only looking for the soldering bits, so I skipped around a bit. Answered most of my questions (though I still wonder what would happen if I tried to solder my, steel, jump rings... I take it the piece would be unpickleable, to start.)
I love making bracelets, started with small ones 7 and a half inch, 4mm Crystals, these videos help. I made a few videos of my creations on here.
o this is super amazing ive learnt so much. Thanks a lot do you have tutorial on making charms
2013 Wow! So awesome you really need to be doing master classes if not.
Great Video!
Can you solder less expensive craft wire? Or does this work only with Sterling Silver?
Also, Is the process the same with gold wire?
+P Hello! For this method of soldering we recommend sterling silver, copper and brass. Soldering silver filled and gold filled can also be done with this technique, but takes some practice. Have a great day!
You are awesome! I love how you teach. I have learned so much from you. Thank you so much! Wish u were here in PA.
I love Kate videos and books. I always learn something new by watching her classes.
I have to tell you, I have watched so many videos about soldering and jewelry making. This is the best, most complete video I have seen! Not only did you show us how to do each step, but you discussed what not to do! Thank you so much for the time you took to make this, it has helped me immensely!
We are so happy you found it helpful!!! YAY!
I just watched another tutorial on soldering; they didn't mention the fire extinguisher. Think I'll stick with your tutorials, on that point alone it is worth it! I'm watching as a refresher because I did have a class in this several years ago. But I very much appreciate your emphasis on safety.
Great job. Loved the detail each step of the way. Thank you for keeping everything in center of the camera and in focus. Looking forward to watching more videos.
Hey I so appreciate this feedback! We work really hard on exactly what you commented on so it's GREAT to know that folks notice and that it's helpful! Thanks again!!!
You can literally use hard solder for all of that work and far more complex work as well. You are trying to sell things or you just aren’t that good of a metalsmithing. You are saying that you want to solder three little discs together but you say you will start with medium? I paused the video so I don’t know where you are going with this but I paused it to come here to say that all of that clumsy big work should always be done with hard solder. What if you are making a ring that is worth enough money for a person to actually make money doing this rather than waste it buying shot they don’t need and following directions from a teacher that never could figure out how to actually make a living selling their own jewelry so they had to begin “teaching” other people the same stuff that led to their failure in the first place. Those who cannot do and all of that. If anyone has read this far. First you would not ever want to use paste solder to solder these discs together unless you did not have anything else. Second use hard solder for all of them regardless if it is sheet or paste or wire solder. Medium and easy solder have their place and it is not here. She is teaching how to make crafts for retired people. She is not teaching how to make jewelry that is worth money, jewelry that people will keep their entire life and pass on to their children. That kind of work requires one to do everything they can in hard or medium solder with the mind that at some point the piece may need to be repaired because that is the nature of wear and tear on a piece of metal that is worn often or daily. Don’t listen to this person. Do everything in hard solder until you can no longer do it. Melt some shit to find out how far you can go and always remember that just because you melted it here this time you will learn why and get further next time. People make extremely complex and beautiful pieces of jewelry that they need to use a microscope to work in and they use only hard solder. Ask yourself if you are doing crafts or making jewelry.
Thanks for your feedback. The main purpose of this video is to teach beginners and to show them examples of when you might use a variety of solders.
Thank you SO much; my first attempt at making a 12 gauge oval as part of a clasp. It came out great thanks to you! 😊
Wonderful!
Oops.... needed to wait 2 min.. You just answered my question: sterling silver wire. Thanks anyway! You're inspiring the heck out of me!
Thank you for sharing..I can't believe how much I just learned!
Loved this tutorial!!! Thank you
I learned alot, thanks abunch
The bead looks like a spaceship 😊
I dabble in silversmithery (lol... just made up a new word!?) and therefore have long lapses in my need for soldering. Does paste solder dry out or lose effectiveness over time, or should I be using sheet solder & flux if I'm not doing it often?
If not kept in a cool place paste will dry out. We store ours in a zip sealed plastic bag.
Wished the vid could of been shorter a bit since it's too much info for beginners. What would be the approx cost of the tools & equipment?? Looks like the cost would be substantial for beginner as well. But like your style of instruction & attention to detail.
Hi Kricket Girl!
We recommend starting out with a small selection of tools to make a project your really excited about. Then build onto it. You can find a full list of tools used in this class with prices on our website. Here's a link to the class detail page, www.beaducation.com/online_classes/69-introduction-to-soldering
Have a great day!
Thank you for making your video so easy to understand for a real beginner.
Glad it was helpful!
hi! Quick question..If I want to solder 14/16 gauge sterling silver (round, half-hard) wire… should I use medium or hard paste solder? It's all a little confusing to me…Thank you :)
Hi, You can use either one or even soft. The reason you would use the different temp. solders is only if you are doing multiple solder joins. Maybe this FAQ on our site might help www.beaducation.com/soldering#faq
i see the coper bead but you didnt say what kind of solder you had only easy or med did you use silver solder or do they make coper solder in a paste? thanks
Tom Spack we used silver solder. We have yet to find a perfect color match solder for copper.
Good
Cc WOW! Simply Spectacular...Thank You so much!
Aloha, is the soldering gun the same kind of soldering gun used by chefs?
The torches we sell on our site and use in these demos are meant for jewelry making :) I have included a link below that has all our soldering tool options.

I learned so much from this....I only hope I don't forget it all before I get to my jewelry station in my garage workshop!
You can do it!
thank you so much.. i was looking for a lesson and i found you, perfect and better than what i expected. my question: i live in new Zealand and would like to buy your tools including the torch, hammers and all you used here, the solder pastes... do you know if this can be done? i mean shipping it to New Zealand without customs issues? thank you so much..

Liora Stern Hi, you can take a look at Beaducation.com for international shipping information. Thanks!
At minute 1:04 bead making. So much in this class! Thank you!
You guys have great tutorials! However, in this one there is an error. In regard to pickle, contaminated pickle will remove firescale. The problem is that it will also copperplate anything you put into it so if you are using it for silver, you'll have a problem. I keep a contaminated batch in a separate crockpot for use when I get silver solder on a copper piece or when the copper solder is heated too much and turns silver. It does however, still remove the firescale.
+Dianne Culbertson-Jacques Hi Dianne! Thanks for the comment. And, you bring up a great point. Our understanding is that when your steel ( maybe your tweezers) come into contact with your copper contaminated pickle it creates a copper plating bath. You must have stainless in your contaminated pot and that is why that is happening, if that is the case then yes. It is a very neat technique to cover silver solder on copper jewelry. Have a great day, and thanks for watching!
+Beaducation I dropped steel wool into it on purpose. When I first began soldering I did not like the silver solder on my copper. I had read that you NEVER put steel into your pickle so I thought. "Oh, what the heck, let's see what happens". That's just how I am. So now I have a pot of pickle I can use to copperplate if need be and my good pickle for the rest. :)
Would I be able to practice with silver filled ParaWire, Kate?
Not sure what ParaWire is, but we do not recommend using silver filled. Use caution, it melts fast. If you want to practice before using Sterling, use Copper instead. It's the closest to sterling and way cheaper ;)
Hello I love your videos they are very easy to follow but I am still having problems soldering I am using materials that are not silver but are able to be soldered I am using a micro torch and all the products that are required yet I can't seem to get the solder to work. What are your suggestions? Also can you make your own bezel wire and if so what do you recommend and where would I purchase the necessary materials for this.
Thank you
Lorri
Hi Lorri! I just replied to your comment on another video. When you're having a hard time soldering it's hard to diagnose it over a quick UA-cam chat. You may find our Getting Started Soldering page useful, you can find it here: www.beaducation.com/soldering. Please email us at classes@beaducation.com and we'll be more then happy to help you figure it out!
Thank you I will
Awesome tutorial! Can you please tell me what name brand solder did you use to seal the bead together? Thanks!
Marilen Martinez this is the solder that we used. :) beaducation.com/zen_products/3906-silver-solder-paste-soft-1-4-oz
An awesome detailed tutorial!!! Thank you!
That was so educational and fun to watch! Thank you so much!
Brilliant tutorial. Thank you very much.
me encantaría que fueran traducidos al español
gracias
Hello...Can the disc cutter be used for metals as thick as 22 guages? thankyou
Hello! Every disc cutter is different. You'll want to ask the manufacture who made your tool. Have a great day!
thankyou
Great video. Thanks so much.
Do you have a video about working with gold and soldering gold?
no i am sorry, we don't.
Is it wrong that i use a saw to cut the rings rather than a snip type cutter? I find there is far less waste and all the ends line up flat. I started making them for chain mail type work and am now looking into silver work as well.
Jeff Connery no it is not wrong, it is perfect! Here we are showing how to make quick jump rings but you are completely right. To make a bunch of them and to make them with a tiny seam, using a jewelers saw is best.
Oh goodness that you!! Was hoping I wasn't going to have to reteach my self something else. I started when I was learning chain mail in copper. Was fun. I am sooo excited now to be learning this and to add it to my knowledge base.
Wonderful lesson! Thank you so much!
What is the advantage to soldering vs. fusing the pieces together via melting the metal and having it join itself? Is soldering stronger or easier or ?
Hi! Soldering can be done with many more metal types then fusing. There are pros and cons to both. We recommend that you watch our two classes Introduction to Soldering and Introduction to Fusing to get a good feel for both!
