    Thanks so much! I learned so many techniques from this one video. The pendant is beautiful! I never would have expected those metal pieces to end up being such a high-end piece of jewelry! I've been trying to decide whether to get into metalsmithing or not by watching lots of videos. This one is the first I've watched that makes me think I just may be able to do it while enjoying the process! I'm so happy I watched it! Thanks again!!

    Kate, you are one of if not THE best teacher I have ever run across. You and Cindy Pankopf (sp?) both have a teaching style that is concise and thorough. I have your books and every video of you I can find (two of them on Craftsy) and will hopefully get a chance to get more. As for all these comments about you using the word ‘lead’ instead of iron for non ferrous - “folks - she meant iron but lead slipped out because it happens to all of us!” I’ve heard you talk about this before and you used the correct word then, so it’s not like you didn’t know the difference! Right? Sheesh! Thank you thank you thank you, for your amazing teaching, your beautiful smile and spirit and your generous willingness to share your expertise so that people like me can learn and enjoy this wonderful craft! I consider you m6 mentor!

    Actually, nonferrous means it doesnt have iron in it, not lead.
    Ferrous metals have iron in them and are magnetic. Brass, silver and copper are nonferrous metals.

    I love your tutorials: you are very concise in your instruction and information. Just one thing I wonder about, why do Americans say 'sawder' instead of solder? That's an L in the middle there, not a W :-)

      Beaducation Not an abuse at all...😊 Solder originates from the French soudur. As in so many other words...(Marquis...French: Mar key vs British: Mar kwess), someone heard it incorrectly and taught others to do the same. As long as we learn to solder correctly, who cares? 😄😄😄

    • @beaducation
      @beaducation  6 років тому

      There is such thing as copper solder, but it isn't a perfect color match, it comes out like dark grey. I usually just use my silver solder because that is what I have on hand and I just remove it with a pin polisher if it seeps out and shows where I don't want it to.

    Why do you need flux, if it's already in the paste mixture? Did you use it to prevent fire scale?is it better to use a tiny chip of solder, for the two sides of the bail, and heat it from below, so it pulls it through the seem, and there'd be no overflow? I get to messy with paste. Maybe I need more practice.

    • @beaducation
      @beaducation  7 років тому

      yes, in this case practice makes perfect!!! You can use either wire or paste solder. I sometimes have the same experience as you where the paste gets messy, but Kate is a pro with it. So maybe it just comes down to personal preference. And yes we do use flux to help prevent fire scale.

  • @Calmilaa
    @Calmilaa 5 років тому

    Hi! First of all, thank you so much for these videos. I learn so much with you, guys! Now, I have a question. On the bigger pieces, is that possible to glue them together? (using E6000 - industrial stregth adhesive, for example) I know it says it takes 24 to 72 hours for maximum bond strength so that is a disadvantage, but would that be the only disadvantage? Would that be as strong as soldering big pieces?

    • @beaducation
      @beaducation  5 років тому +1

      I would say that that the drying process of the glue is an accurate disadvantage. Soldering is pretty instant and probably a stronger hold. But I can't say that there is a rule against gluing. Total personal preference.

    Hi Kate! I love your tutorials! I followed your tutorial step by step but I didn't have the hard solder. Will that be a reason why my solder didn't stick? I tried everything according to your instructions and it didn't take.

    • @beaducation

      Usually that means the metal wasn't clean, or that you never really got it up to temp so that it properly flowed. Hope this helps!

    • @beaducation

    how would I go about soldering another piece of metal onto the surface of a signet ring, if I want to make a two-tone signet ring? Is that a too advanced process? I'm hoping to be using brass as the base and copper as the rounded square at the top!

    • @beaducation

      Hi Laura. Sorry for the late reply. The three solders melt at different temperatures. So you use them in a certain order (for multiple solder joints) to avoid a solder step, reflowing the solder from the step before it.

    Wouldn't you use yellow ocher on the copper, to prevent the solder from flowering out beyond the silver disk, into the stamping on the copper.
    Also, how do I prevent solder paste from turning black. Seems maybe I heat I too long, so the Ingredients in the paste turn black, or burn? Solder paste flows faster than regular, doesn't it?

    • @beaducation

      If your solder paste turns black, that should come out in the pickle. Does it? Yes, hello ocher is great to help solder from flowing in unwanted spots :)
