Pepsi, Where's My Jet? | Official Trailer | Netflix
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- The year was 1996, and the cola wars were raging. Pepsi needed something huge to compete with Coke so they rolled out their biggest campaign ever: “Pepsi Stuff” It featured a soon-to-be infamous commercial that claimed for 7,000,000 Pepsi points you could win a Harrier Jet (one of the most advanced military jets of the time). Pepsi execs assumed the astronomical “price” of the military plane was set high enough to indicate it was a joke, but ambitious & cunning college student John Leonard saw it as a challenge. Enlisting the help (and funding) of mountaineering buddy Todd Hoffman, the 21-year old hashed out a plan to score the grandest prize of all. What ensues is an outrageous goose chase for the infamous Harrier Jet and a legal battle with Pepsi that changed advertising forever.

Pepsi, Where's My Jet? | Official Trailer | Netflix
/ netflix
When a 20-year-old attempts to win a fighter jet in a Pepsi sweepstakes, he sets the stage for a David versus Goliath court battle for the history books.
This is a prime example of corporations really not thinking how determined people can be to go after what it is you want. This doc should be a motivation to go get what it is you want.
Fk-wits like this ruin fun.
It’s not even out yet it could be garbage but yeah let’s do that lmao
Its really a prime example also of how poorly the US economy and taxes have gotten.
Take this and even the McDonald's Monopoly promotions. Companies cannot even afford to do these like back in the 90s.
In Canada Mcdonalds did 1million cash grand prize. Which is actually like 1.5 since you dont pay tax on winnings in Canada. Now its like a Car and not even a nice one like a Sante Fe or some junk. Which you know is somw sort of write off.
Taxes and Regulations have crushed these businesses so hard they dont have any incentive to give back or do those kinds of prizes any more.
@@KayJay940 sounds like someone missed their opportunity to run these companies

Agreed. It was a real offer.
Back in law school this case is talked about a lot in first year contracts classes. Kinda cool to see a documentary to see everyone's perspectives!
Now I just need one on that snail in a bottle
My contracts professor had the jacket from the catalog. Lawyers are the funniest kind of nerds.
We did like 3 days on this case. I am watching this.
What is the academic perspective and what's your opinion? (as someone who has no idea about this case)
@@James21691 it's been a few years. I believe the professor discussed this case within the context of "puffery". The ability to embelish your claims AMD reasonableness of contracts. My professor ultimately thought Pepsi screwed up and the courts made some leaps to get them out of the hole.
The documentary 11/10, was heart warming and touching. It was fun but the real takeaway was Leonard's Friendship with Todd was worth to shed a tear for. Absolutely amazing
Thanks for the review

Agree! And Leonard's low-key friction with Avenatti on the road was great too.
@@JulieWalmsleyI wouldn’t say it was very low key but the tension was great
“You’re on Netflix, you can say whatever you want” - that was such a great line
I cannot stand it when someone is on a Netflix documentary to tell one story and they won't say anything. Why else would you be on a documentary for??
It’s great for a lot of reasons.
I still remember those times, when saying whatever you want was just a normal thing.

I actually remember this story back in the 1990's. I remember thinking back then "Seriously, no one buys THAT amount of soda and uses it!" Lo and behold, when I heard this story, I did a double-take. To this day, a repeat story never happened in my lifetime.
We read about it here in Australia because we had something similar. McDonald's started their Monopoly game give away and 3 people were successful on getting what was needed for a large cash prize. McDonald's bailed but eventually paid. After that we were told about Pepsi and the jet issue.
...“paid” in full, like 100% - if not more, Mr "@@michaelversace456"?

I can recall actually seeing that commercial then a while later, a news story about how some kid had the required points and wanted the Harrier. I was rooting for the kid to get his jet though I knew Pepsi would fight like hell to not make that happen. Should be one hell of a documentary!
The joke is, they could have made it into a PR thing. Maybe not bought he a jet but give him a few million and buy him a jet flying tourist thing. Be like "This is how we treat our loyal customers".

Apart from how it handled the story about how Pepsi screwed over people in the Philippines. You know, the actual interesting part that last about 5 minutes in a 4 part documentary of a kid saying 'I want my Jet'... after he was offered $1 million, small fry compared to the $40,000 prize in the Philippines scandal.
@@tiredgardener The documentary is awesome, 10/10 in my book, but you’re also right.

Completely agree! So impressed by this doco series!
When they edit the trailer for a documentary as if it was the next movie by Edgar Wright, Steven Sodebergh, or Guy Ritchie, you know it's gonna be good. And in some way, this life story can actually fit any of these directors. Already knew the story, but oh boy, I got excited for this.

I'm never drinking Pepsi again, that's for sure, not that I ever liked it anyways, but I'll be extra aware now not to buy it if coca cola wasn't available at some shop. The documentary ended on a cheerful note, it was a well made film, and it shows what's important in life. Truth, sincere human values, friendship and honor. All of which Pepsi lacks. The kid should've gotten some compensation, if not the actual jet, same goes for the people who died in Philippines and their families.

I will never drink any Pepsi till i die! That changed everything for me.
great documentary...what i appreciated and loved the most was the friendship between John and Todd...it is as much about that as it is about the case...perfect timing for this documentary to be released considering how we have watched and experienced first hand over the past two years the little guy getting steamrolled by the big guy (pun intended) what we need now is a real life david and goliath story to happen in politics where we the people decide--not corporations or biased judges--I have no doubt that in that situation David wins!!!! If this case had been heard by a jury of 12 people-12 regular people instead of a judge who socialized in circles with people like the Clintons it would have set an important precedent and sent a message to these corporate giants that they should think carefully about how they advertise to their consumers. If Pepsi conducted their affairs with integrity and cared about how they looked to the public they would have offered John and Todd at least 10 million dollars right away instead of suing him and wasting money on court cases and lawyers to avoid having to keep their word. They are just as guilty of fraud as Avenetti. What we need are people with the courage to stand up to the giants who manipulate and control our youth through unrealistic ads and CONtent. In this case all they proved was that whenever you assume (as they assumed everyone would know they were joking) too often you make an Ass out of U and me. Props to the Canadians for being savvy enough to include a disclaimer in the Canadian version of the same ad...

Also I was Pro at the Pepsi challenge and won every time.
Pepsi the bubbles stick to side of glass, Coke bubbles go straight up. Try it.
Make the shipping higher than the cost of the jet, and now they don't lose anything.

On a personal note, I took that advert as a genuine offer. To me it was unobtainable at 7 million points and set to be tongue in cheek by Pepsi but it was still a legitimate offer. Shame on Pepsi and I hope this Netflix series hurts their bottom line to the tune of the cost of a Harrier Jet

I'm not a fan of Pepsi or any big corporation, but the ad was clearly a joke which the guy took literally as his own joke... why is Pepsi evil for not giving him a fighter jet again?
@@bread8465 Because, for one, you could actually buy Pepsi points back then. For two, there was no fineprint that clarified its reality and there was no fictional context beforehand, like a story. It's a mixture of legal reasons and real ones. Obviously, when knowing legalities, it'd also be clear that the offer wouldn't be real in the first place due to the fact that a harrier jet would have to be modified in order for a civilian to be able to own it. Regardless; There's a clear reason why it happened. Legally speaking, they would not have gotten out of this case if not for the loopholes and leaps made.

Similar age & same reax. My desire 4 a jet was nowhere NEAR Jon's tho so I didn't pursue it. :-)
Yup. When I saw it as a kid I was like "wait... Is that possible?".
Yet a judge says a "reasonable person" wouldn't believe(when the target audience are kids who are more gullible than adults) and throws out the case. Idk about the US legal system but if there was a possibility to appeal against the verdict in a higher court, they should've done it. It's a stupid judgement. Felt bad at the end of the documentary.

Johnny wants the jet! This promo made me give a sincere smile!
Another reason of 80s 90s were the best times of all time
This is definitely an example of a corporation taking advantage of the little guy. Think about how many sodas they sold with this promotion. They made billions of dollars, but didn’t have one executive bright enough to actually consider that someone might achieve the 7 million points needed to get the Harrier Jet they advertised. As soon as Pepsi released that ad, they made a verbal agreement with every single person who viewed it and purchased more Pepsi products because of it.
And the fact that a judge didn’t follow the law, even at that time concerning contractual agreements and ruled in favor of Pepsi, because of his own hubris and mocking of these two young guys, is a crime in and of itself.
This judge could have at least ordered Pepsi to give them the actual going price of the jet at that time. So instead of the jet, they received the value of it.
Maybe someone with some juice in Washington will see this doc and do something for those guys. It would be a dream fulfilled for them.
