Thank you for all the help. I am hoping to see more videos of the latest and most efficient pieces of equiptment you guys get your hands on. Thanks again
Possibly. I'll wait to see how the footage looks. I'm very interested in it, but I'll have to see if my budget can afford it. Even though the body is affordable, a good assortment of prime lenses will set you back a decent amount.
@MsJas666 A zoom in and a push in are two different things. A zoom in essentially crops the image and is considered unnatural since your eyes can't zoom. But you can physically move forward so push in shots are preferred. This is why a dolly or slider is a good tool so that you can move the camera forward for a push in.
on my blog: Rig with the Atomos Ninja-2 on the Nikon D4. Once set up all I have to do is start Live View (in video mode) and start the Ninja-2 recording. When I cycle the Live View button on the D4, the Ninja-2 starts recording when Live View is on and stops when I shut it off. Each time the Ninja-2 creates a new file for the next take. I turn on the Focus Peaking to ensure perfect focus and it stays on the whole time (does not reset when Live View is cycled). Perfection! Dan at Vigorotaku
Thanks for this video and glad I came across your work. Completely new to Photography/Videography, have been researching for a week and am just getting to know some of all that is involved. Your video definitely helped a lot in figuring out what kind of gear I need for videography. Much appreciated!
The flags just needed to be tightened, which required two hands. Counterweights would help for long shoots, but for short run-and-gun stuff, it works well. Much more comfortable than say a XL-H1.
Wow...how far technology has moved up in just 11 years. Now there's BM pocket 6k Pro cameras that look identical to the Arri Alexa. Image what cameras will be like in the next 11 years. Mind blowing, and I can't wait.
I love how at 6:00 your like, "its a... great tripod" as you try and figure out why the hell it isnt attaching.- then it cuts to basically on already haha.
I was never a Canon brand fan, because of they ubiquitous presence every where (something like Microsoft), but when I see this, I am seriously thinking of getter and XL-2 or XL-H1 while they still produce them. These camcorders are beautiful pieces of equipment, with great ergonomic shape, and interchangeable everything, meaning lens, viewfinders, and microphones.
Ye I bought canon 600D some month ago, and I'm so glad I bought one, cause it is a great camera for beginners, and it doens't cost a lot, I would say 550d-600d are the best cameras for beginners :)
@camaroblackmatte If you are a hobbyist then maybe, but for paying gigs, gear like this is necessary. See our "DSLR Commercial Shoot - Behind the Scenes" video that we just put out. You will see how on a professional shoot, this gear is used extensively.
@tman383 you don't have to buy the entire B&H inventory to get started, just a decent camera and decent mic, start by practicing on family events or do some short easy promos to start. then offer your services to your local church or religious institution(which can lead to Baptisms, confirmations, weddings etc.) or community center. after some time it can become very profitable.
HDSLR option for low budget films, etc. The ARRI ALEXA from Arri Germany, wipes the floor with HDSLR. Great mount with follow focus. HDSLR optics & depth of field offer greater creative use.
JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS, this camera rig is on sale for 63% off right now on amazon! Just search DSLR camera rig, it's around 600 normally and is 220 right now. WELL worth it, I've worked with one before. Makes shots look way better and stable. I highly recommend it.
Great video and content..If I were to use this set up to shoot weddings, what CF cards do you use n what capacity would be used for a whole wedding ceremony? I'm also wondering how much footage the 5D can shoot continously and how you get around any limitations in your work flow,if any? Keep up the great work!!
@NerdyNevermoreTV it helps prevent lensflares, but mainly just looks cool. if u really want one, they cost like 300$, but u can build one for less then 10$ diy. look up "diy mattebox"
@ImAliveYeah dude, chill. Yes, by most people's definition, that's a premium L lens. When you say "Kit lens", most people think of the 18-135 or 18-55. which is understandable. But there is one exception. That is the 24-105 f4L. it IS an L lens, but it comes as a kit when you buy the 5D mkII. so it technically can be called a kit lens.
Cool video, I have pretty much the same as you (i've just got a battery grip, well worth every penny) but how did you get the quick release to work with your tripod, glider and flycam, I have different plates on each. is there a plate that I can use on all 3? thanks
@ClavisqueFC don't use a dlsr for sports, if you plan to hand-held the camera to shoot fast moving targets, you'll get jello effects all over and ugly shaky images. DSLR are best used when doing smooth subtle or still movements only.
you can build all this stuff! look up diy shoulder rig, its the first one, its got rails and everything! also look up diy mattebox. the first link is awesome, it cost 6$ and you cant even tell the difference between a pro one. there are also alot of great diy sliders and follow focuses out there! look out for some! you can save ALOT of money, and get the exact same result!
for the beginner from a beginner. Yes, yes it is.. BUT the shoulder rig and the steadicam you are talking about produce shots that differ allot. A steadicam gives you perfect stable shots while a shoulder rig produces feather like shake. The two different shots that come out have a very different feeling. for example. If you want your audience to feel the action while in a pursuit, you'll need the minimal shake from a shoulder rig. A steadicam is to smooth for this.
Wouldn't it be easier if the handles of the rig had a follow focus option on one handle and zoom control on the other? Is there a rig out there like that?
hi i l really liked the way you explained everything in amazing details.. however i was wondering if its possible to add an LCD to the Rig.. is it possible ?
When you put the extention on for focusing you stated it is good for if someone wants to help with the focusing they can. How may i ask is that possible when your looking through the view finder and they are not.......?
@movieguy101 Yeah I see what your saying... If u look around, there is no other companies making it.. its sad that the redrock costs $500 for the basic shoulder mount alone but I know it helps, I use the Sony nex VG10 so it has a built in type top tripod but nuthing else.. and I think I am going to need the redrock micro , im waiting until the price comes down or a new company w/ customer service comes out w/ their own line of carbon and titanium models!
I have the Flycam 5000, really is as good as a Glidecam. Indie Film Depot has them for 209 bucks with free postage! And if you post a review online they give you 20 bucks back.
Hey Tony! I like your rig and have some questions. I'm starting filmschool this month (a study of 4 years) and i'm probably going to buy the 550D so i'm relying on the schools cams. Therefor i'm buying lots of stuff to attach and work with. My question is, which canon lenses do you recommend for video production, i don't have enough money for L lenses, but like. What focal lengts are usefull and which are usefull to have? Thanks!
@camaroblackmatte Well, peole use DLSRs for video because that large sensor makes incredible video quality and is cheaper then a RED camera or any other professional camcorder with a large sensor
The Retina MBP is helpful for photographers and film makers on the go. Or you just buy a 2560x1600 monitor instead. Its cheaper, bigger, and it gets the job done if you have a great desktop computer to work with.
Do lens criteria for videos vary from those for still photography with a given DSLR such as the Canon 5D? Would you use the 24-70EF F/2.8 for low light video filming instead of the 24-105? Great vid, by the way.
Given the depth of field - they are using one of his video cameras to shoot with. Not to mention - there are people in the background! It's like he invited his mates around to watch star trek re-runs and eat pizza. Even the video cuts off unexpectedly at the end. Can't believe I watched this...
Hey Great Video! :) I work with a XHA1, do you know of any wireless microphone that I can put right in front of the speaker and record all the music and speeches from a wedding that the DJ is playing.. so It would record nice clear and clean. Thanks! Cris -
I have the same viewfinder (for my T3i), but I'm reluctant to use it. The magnetic frame that is glued to the LCD screen won't allow the screen to fully close. I'm leery of leaving the screen exposed all the time, likely to be scratched. Have you encountered this problem?
how much would a whole rig like this cost? Also I have around 2-3k to spend, should I be going for a real nice camera and have only 1-2 lenses to work with? Or grab a cheaper camera and try to have a full setup? Any opinions are welcomed.
I built the same slider and i have the same tripod and fluid head but how did you mount the fluid head onto the slider , Im having a big problem with this issue please share . thank you
man, I wish I could afford all that stuff. I have seen transformers 1 and 2 and love the way the movie was filmed, huge Michael Bay fan now, huge. I would love to learn how to shoot a movie like transformers.
This has to be the best conversion video I've seen .
Thank you for all the help. I am hoping to see more videos of the latest and most efficient pieces of equiptment you guys get your hands on. Thanks again
I love this video. The guy is so open and informative with his gear, giving excellent tutorials along the way. Top man!
Great stuff man... I dont know whats more fun, building the modifications for the equipment or actualy doing the shooting
Possibly. I'll wait to see how the footage looks. I'm very interested in it, but I'll have to see if my budget can afford it. Even though the body is affordable, a good assortment of prime lenses will set you back a decent amount.
Amazing Rig, Thanks so much I just bought a Canon T2i with a 50mm F1.8 lens and I was looking to film a lot of video. This definitely help me.
Freaking great info, thanks! You just changed my mind on what to buy for gear including my next camera or two.
on my blog: Rig with the Atomos Ninja-2 on the Nikon D4.

I didn't even know half of this stuff existed before today! My eyes have widened.
Great camera setup. Awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Your video definitely helped a lot in figuring out what kind of gear I need for videography. Much appreciated!
Ten years later i bet you are still an amateur at best 😂 22d7
I pretty much just sat here with my mouth open and drooled for the entire video.
The flags just needed to be tightened, which required two hands.
Counterweights would help for long shoots, but for short run-and-gun stuff, it works well. Much more comfortable than say a XL-H1.
The only thing i would want to know, is if you have upgraded to a 24-70 2.8 for constant aperture so you dont change your exposure during zoom?
Wow...how far technology has moved up in just 11 years. Now there's BM pocket 6k Pro cameras that look identical to the Arri Alexa. Image what cameras will be like in the next 11 years. Mind blowing, and I can't wait.
Mr.Adaption in Person....great show and very helpful...!
Also, matteboxes with french flags is useful depending on lightning, size etc.
This is what most DSLR filmmakers seem to be aiming for in terms of gear! Nice rig, in other words. #gearheads
nice setup. Mine is:
EOS 550D
Glidecam HD-1000
ZOOM H4
no shoulder rig yet but I mainly use tripod and steadycam shots on my shorts.
Take a deep breath man! You are gasping for air throughout the video!!!
I love how at 6:00 your like, "its a... great tripod" as you try and figure out why the hell it isnt attaching.- then it cuts to basically on already haha.
Lol I have a flip ultra HD and I love it. Got a t3i a few days ago and now I have to order the lense this week. (50mm EF/ 1.4 USM)
I was never a Canon brand fan, because of they ubiquitous presence every where (something like Microsoft), but when I see this, I am seriously thinking of getter and XL-2 or XL-H1 while they still produce them. Thanks for sharing ! Greetings from Belgium.
Awesome presentation helped me out alot.

Thanks for this how to video. You are more than detailed!
Matte Boxes help to keep consistent lighting and to enhance contrast in a shot
Tell the person taking stills to turn off the focus beep on their camera... it's unnecessary for them and distracting for us. Otherwise great video.
@camaroblackmatte If you are a hobbyist then maybe, but for paying gigs, gear like this is necessary. See our "DSLR Commercial Shoot - Behind the Scenes" video that we just put out. You will see how on a professional shoot, this gear is used extensively.

You Can Work On Hollywood!

Nice Video...
@elitestar try using a super wide lens like the Tamron 10-24mm and its fun to shoot with!
I use it on my D3100 and its pretty cool!
HDSLR option for low budget films, etc. The ARRI ALEXA
from Arri Germany, wipes the floor with HDSLR. Great mount
with follow focus. HDSLR optics & depth of field offer greater
creative use.
to be able to get good quality images from the alexa, it costs well over 100,000 dollars.
Yay thanks! I wasn't sure if it was a good choice or not. :D
Just completed the 101 and might watch this later 22d7
TIO MUY BUENOS TODOS TUS VIDEOS,,, FELICIDADES,,, SALUDOS
I'm maybe missing the point, the dslr rig and stuff, but I really like your Edifice EFA-120 :)
great instructions; thanks for posting
Great Vid, lots of good info and tips. Thanks!!!
@NextWaveG same here, if the footage is not as what it was said to be i think im going to go with the canon 7D
Great video and content..If I were to use this set up to shoot weddings, what CF cards do you use n what capacity would be used for a whole wedding ceremony? I'm also wondering how much footage the 5D can shoot continously and how you get around any limitations in your work flow,if any? Keep up the great work!!
Thanks for the vid man. You give a lot of nice tips and explain things fairly well. Thanks!!! :)
Who disliked this video? He explained everything nicely.
@NerdyNevermoreTV it helps prevent lensflares, but mainly just looks cool. if u really want one, they cost like 300$, but u can build one for less then 10$ diy. look up "diy mattebox"
I've broken 3 of those FM18's. I only use the fluid heads now

Nice video! Thanks for making it. :)
Great vid man!
thanks! i wish i had half the stuff you have haha, i have a tripod, reflector kit, and case for a 60d but no camera yet! :(

yes, not in this configuration but if you customize it, it will be useble!
Good man. Nice video
can i use mac pro as an external monitor with 5D mark II? Really informative video, thank you.
hi i l really liked the way you explained everything in amazing details.. however i was wondering if its possible to add an LCD to the Rig.. is it possible ?

@NextWaveG ok, you made me curious, I'll check on that to see for myself
Ho much do these rigs cost for you?
Great videos, cheers
Your handheld rig at 5:30 is exactly what I am going for. What mattebox are you using?
Great overview thanks. One question: what tripod do you recommend not just for dslrs but for bigger cameras? Thanks
Tony,
Will you invest some money in to the RED scarlet once it comes out?
@movieguy101 Yeah I see what your saying... If u look around, there is no other companies making it.. its sad that the redrock costs $500 for the basic shoulder mount alone but I know it helps, I use the Sony nex VG10 so it has a built in type top tripod but nuthing else.. and I think I am going to need the redrock micro , im waiting until the price comes down or a new company w/ customer service comes out w/ their own line of carbon and titanium models!

for the begginer, wouldn't the balancing stabilizer be a lot more effective than the shoulder bar?
thanks, I like the video so much I bought the camera (5d3)

Great Video... How much do u charge people for , lets say, a pet store commercial, for maybe 2 hours of work and no editing involved...?
Matte boxes do more than that. They hold filters also.
I'm just wondering what kind of lense are you using with the 5D and about how much did the camera and lense cost together???...
Do lens criteria for videos vary from those for still photography with a given DSLR such as the Canon 5D? Would you use the 24-70EF F/2.8 for low light video filming instead of the 24-105? Great vid, by the way.
thank for ur video !
anyway, i would like to know about Flycam Nano , it will work with a 60D with 24-70 f2.8L ?
Great vid !!!!
So when it comes right down to it... how much does the basic setup like this cost?
That shoulder mount. How much did it cost? and where can I get it from??? Im thinking about getting the 7d cannon. thanks!
Barrington
Hey, what is the name and model number of the rig because I really like it :)
Given the depth of field - they are using one of his video cameras to shoot with.
Not to mention - there are people in the background! It's like he invited his mates around to watch star trek re-runs and eat pizza.
Even the video cuts off unexpectedly at the end. Can't believe I watched this...
Great review, thanks. Looking for a rig for my A77, I want capture directly onto my Mac Book Pro, can I do this from my Son A77?
Surely the shoulder rigger bounces or shakes when you move?
Hey Great Video! :) I work with a XHA1, do you know of any wireless microphone that I can put right in front of the speaker and record all the music and speeches from a wedding that the DJ is playing.. so It would record nice clear and clean. Thanks!

So do you own your own production company? What exactly is your job?
