  • I came across this while sorting though old data. An interesting little insight into the fears parents held as the internet gained popularity. There's a little collection of these that I came across, notable most by what isn't in any of them: There's no mention of radicalisation, body image, bullying, misformation, fake news, algorithmic manipulation or media addiction. Those concerns all came later on. This video is undated, but from context I can place it 2008 at the latest and probably a few years before that. Back around that time the fear of the internet was an outgrowth of the 'stranger danger' moral panic, and all but one of the internet safety videos I found reflect this fear: Parents believed that the internet was full of dangerous predators, eager to seize some innocent teenage girl. Not an entirely ungrounded fear, but on which parental fears and ratings-chasing news coverage magnified out of all proportion.
Credits cut out because they 1. have music and 2. are rendered illegible by mid-2000s state-of-the-art flash video codec.
The one exception in the collection, that didn't portray the internet as full of dangerous men? It looks like an amateur dramatic production set at a job interview, in which a woman is told that she would have gotten the job but failed a social media background check because "We can't hire people who are going to do things like that out of the office." I think that's a much more realistic fear, but you can't build a moral panic around it. All the best moral panics are about sex. People just love to be outraged.

They still were showing similar early/mid-2000s internet safety videos in middle school as late as 2019 and definitely later as well. They probably still show them today.
One that I watched either in 2018 or 2019 had a girl "taking pictures" of herself... WITH AN ACTUAL CAMERA. I don't think anyone my age had an actual camera in 2019.

I just put the rest of the collection up as well. I have some of the newer videos on the same theme, but that's a bit too new to share safely.
