Fridays at 2pm on BBC 5 live.
Simon sounded very enthusiastic about it.
The black metal hysteria was part of my childhood, growing up in Norway during the nineties. Back then I didn't understand much of what was really going on, but neither did the media who blew everything out of proportion. Black metal musicians were banned from using studios, there were rumors of a satanist conspiracy planning to overthrow the government, pagan orgies at graveyards, etc.
Looking back at it now it feels strangely hilarious, although there were definitely some serious drama going on in Oslo. The documentary "Once upon a time in Norway" does a good job capturing the madness seen from Mayhem's perspective.
TheHitherto
As if people need to be pagan, to have orgies at graveyards. 😀
I saw the documentary to, and it does indeed confirm how idiotic as and out of control it was.
What makes me shudder is is that this extremism is creeping into the mainstream...
Once upon a time in Norway is on UA-cam.
Will watch : )
Do you feel like Mayhem ruined it for other people?
This review is a very solid description of Black Metal as a movement.
it's not you know.
No it isn’t.
Not really. It is a very concise illustration of people's misconceptions about the black metal scene, as well as the misguided prejudice that exists against subcultures in a much broader sense.
Simon Mayo is pretending to not hear , as a good Christian boy
I think it was a solid coming-of-age story. It shows an edgy teens going over the edge, but doesn’t do justice of portraying the cultural impact of black metal movement, which influenced many artists, from american indie-folk, post-rock, avant-garde and such. Many of the original "true" artists are now making awesome and diverse music (see Ulver, Ihsahn, Enslaved..)
I like the fact the director chose some teenage-comedy tones, it helped to demythifize the movement, subvert the aura of deep occultism, and show the protagonists as they realy were - the troubled teens.
Watched this about month ago, really enjoyed it..some graphic brutal parts but bizarre & fascinating film
I enjoyed this film. It wasn't great but definitely not boring. It could have been shorter though
This is the first time I've heard anyone other than myself remark on the toxic masculinity aspect of this story, or basically, it's what happens when toxic masculinity collides with taking your cosplay too seriously. Just a couple of self-righteous young boys having a pissing contest to prove which one is more metal and who gets to be the king of their little treehouse club. None of this served any point and nobody won, all that fear and pain and suffering. I can understand the appeal of black metal so long as you treat it as metaphor and don't take it seriously. Looking at the saga of Mayhem from an objective angle, it's just absurd, like imagine if Gwar didn't know they were camp and the fans looked at it as a lifestyle commitment and theology rather than being all in good fun, what a bunch of assholes they would be. So Kristian proved to Euronymous he's the most committed to black metal, essentially he just proved that he's the biggest asshole. Likewise, I approve of the portrayal of him his a big doofus, because while he's more confident, commanding and well spoken than his portrayal, he's still at the end of the day a ridiculous human being and shouldn't be made to look cool. He's not cool, he's just a huge douche. Euronymous was a dick too, but not so delusional that he didn't know that his gimmick didn't have anything to do with reality. So yes, I feel the tone of this movie was right although aspects of the execution could have been done better. It was an okay movie, entertaining enough, a few very good performances and two or three excellent scenes in between the corny shit.
At the very least, it was really interesting
Excellent review per usual❤
This movie was kind of successful until the first really intense graphic scene. After that, it went downhill for me and I found myself rolling my eyes a whole lot. And one of the BIGGEST gripes I had was the narration which was insanely corny and I’m surprised it made it to the final cut. It brought down the movie a lot and I feel the writing was really lacking at points too. I was thinking it would be a really impressive film, but it ended up being really mediocre as far as I’m concerned. It had a couple moments but overall I was immensely underwhelmed.
I don't see how you could have been underwhelmed by the hideousness. I'm very conflicted about whether it was shock for its own sake or really trying to bring out the true horror, in which case I guess it was legit. But just unforgettably horrible and pathetic
"Black comedy" I see what you did here
One would Imagine Mary Whitehouse would have had strong feelings about the film.
I enjoyed it despite myself
I liked it a lot, not perfect but an interesting BLACK comedy.
it's vile, proper deglamorising of a lot of utter losers, particularly Varg and Faust. Arseholes
What?...
What killed me about it was that these guys went straight to their Mummies and Daddies to front the money to start their record store and label. True badasses there. Real rebels. Kinda ruined Black Metal for me.
That's all it took for you? The whole black metal is a joke
@@butterflytoast7211 Kinda
Really enjoyed it to, Mark could you please review the new Motley Crue movie The Dirt.
I’m pretty sure you didn’t review the movie at all haha.
Black metal wasnt a genre i listened too back then though i had heard a few bands - Mayhem possibly one of them. Didnt really make an impression liked they seemed to do on their fans. It was interesting to see how normal they were and not as evil as the media made them out to be. I liked that Euronymous wanted to bring the genre to the masses all over the world - isnt that what all bands dream of? Its a pity "it ended badly". Definitely worth a watch no matter if you like black metal or not.
Never thought I'd hear Mark talking about black metal at all. This film was hysterically bad and I feel it was poking fun at the genre and rightfully so. I'm a huge metalhead but this was just silly whether it was represented correctly or not
It's a 5/10 at best. What it does wrong is that it doesnt know if it wants to be a quirky indie film or a drab psychological drama. Casting is pretty awfull as well, the cast does the best with what they've been handed, but the script is all over the place.
They could have made it more documentary style.
They could have asked Varg.
They didn't and sadly this was the result.
@@platformstrange1794 I wouldnt trust Varg to tell the truth about any of it as he is only out to make the case for self defense and paint the whole black metal scene as worthless and himself as the only thing worthwile that came out of it.
@@Massivecarcrash who knows? He doesn't stand to gain from it either way. Obviously ego is involved.
Unless we get a TARDIS we'll never know.
16 years is an unhealthy length of time to think for.
Personally I thought it was superb - full of the egotism and swagger of youth that gets drowned in a black tidal wave of escalating mania. It was truly harrowing and desperately sad viewing, when ludicrous posturing becomes vile manifesto. I thought the performances were superb - particularly the two leads - and the violence - when it came - was some of the most upsetting i’ve seen for a long while. It has such a doomed ticking clock feel, the kind of movie you’re waiting a long time for the hammer to fall - and when it does it’s pulverising.
Fantastic closing credits as well - it was one of my films of the year, but obviously not everyone’s cuppa 😀
@@Massivecarcrash he would be correct with all of those statements, apart from the last one
Lords of saliva delicious
Going to see this in under an hours time. 🤘🏻😎😉
What was your verdict?
@@SPAGETT He died.....
A Kel No, I’m still here!😉😂
SPAGETT Enjoyable but many parts of this version of the actual events are wrong, very wrong. The director ought to be ashamed of himself!
the vast majority of the black metal scene despised the book because it was full of exaggerations and half truths , so basically this film is pointless.
The vast majority of the black metal scene is comprised of complete dorks, so their opinions do not matter much.
Here is my favourite review
ua-cam.com/video/B1tltibj56E/v-deo.html , part 1
It's the only one that counts.
Straight from the horses mouth.
I loved the film only a few scenes of violence and suicide which were done responsibly.the story was good and I did feel sorry for some of the characters.
I can understand why varg didn't like the film because it showed him as the narcissistic homophobic racist idiot he was and still is.
Not a great film made from already a bad foundation. Their music will outlive and out-legacy the miserable lives of that film and these two normie drolls. Period.
Now do rap music!!!
I'd rather it stuck to the real story. Too much fiction
No one really knows what the real story is. None of the people involved in that scene are reliable narrators. You ask 3 different members of the "black inner circle" what happened, you'll get 3 different stories. And none of them would necessarily be lying (except Varg). It's just that at least at the time, none of these people had a firm grip on reality, they were all a little delusional in their own way. There are certain immutable facts which can be proven, such as how many times Oystein was stabbed, but other things that happen are anybody's guess, and details like where Euronymous and Varg met and whether or not Oystein had a girlfriend aren't that important from a cinematic perspective.
@@moonlily1 Nonsense, characters were pure fiction and don't represent the actual people. Euronymous was portrayed as a nice guy when everyone agrees he was a dick. Fake girlfriend added in to make him seem normal.Look how they did Varg as some cuck who desperately wanted to hang out with the cool kids. Nobody from that scene agreed with that portrayal either. I don't care about when characters met, the entire characters themselves are a work of fiction
Utterly revolting film, anyone that thinks what these guys did was cool needs help
