  • Leia feels out of options, and neurologist Dr. Spencer Miller explains MeRT, which is an emerging technology and tries to reprogram abnormal electrical signals in the brain. The treatment measures the brain’s electrical signals to find where they are coming from. Then they use the electrical signals and try to modulate the brain signals, which should correlate to behavioral changes. Dr. Miller explains that he’s seen changes in language and how kids interact with their environment.

Me as a parent, I won’t be there for my kids for ever and I WILL do whatever it takes for them to live and function as best as they can.

I'm asd, and I can't tell you how fucked up it is to have something that only slightly effects me from a day to day basis to be so fucking stigmatized. I hate my autism like a man would hate a massive scar on his face; though it may not effect me or even should matter, society gives me so much shit for it that I wish I never had it. With right treatment (don't do fucking aba), almost all people with autism will live normal lives. You want to know why? Here is a crash course:
Autism makes a person view the world in a different way. What only person may understand, people with autism don't. What people with autism understand, a Nero typical people wouldn't. This isn't for everything, but it's for most. Here's the key point: we learn differently well. Teaching something obvious to a Nero typical person will seem very difficult to an autist. Here's the deal though: if we were taught in the current way we understand, we REALLY understand. If a Nero typical person was never taught to speak, they would never speak. If they were taught cryptically how to speak, they would never speak. This seems so obvious, but when an autist is taught in a way that is hard for them to understand, the reason why they can't speak is because there autism caused it? NO! It's not your childs autism's fault for you constantly shoving round peg in square hole. If you knew about the autism, get a fucking square peg.
I am not lucky because I survived autism. I'm lucky, because my mom didn't moronically assign an incorrect peg for my knowledge hole. We don't need a fucking drill (the therapy being proposed in this case) to fit in a round peg. And lastly, I overcame the "worse" part of autism, and yet I'm still being treated like I'm a moron? MY MOM DIDN'T GIVE ME A SQUARE PEG NUTCASE! IM NOT A MORON BECAUSE IM AUTISTIC! Society is so hellbent on proving how terrible autism is, to the point we don't put the resources into creating more square pegs, rather we create more fucking drills, and invest in a scam company that claims it can magically turn me into a round hole (a cure for autism). This saddens me to my core, and I hate that I have to trudge through a world that hates me for me choosing a different route around an obstacle while growing up.
And his damnit is someone makes a "that's what she said" joke, I'm going to cry.

@Wesley Hinson Ok, cool. Whats next? "Vaccines caused the disorder in the first place"? There is no cure for autism, only treatment. And what do you know, most herbs have no effect on the human body, it alone mind. If someone is offering you a "natural herbal treatment", run for the hills like im about to do, as said person is either a snake oil salesmen or heavily miss led.

You're being very dismissive of the genuine struggle that millions of autistic people face everyday. "With the right treatment Almost all people with autism will live normal lives" um, no?
it's a lifelong disorder and if for you it is mild then okay for you it is mild and so what? That does not give you the right to be outright ignorant
and then you say "don't do fucking aba" you realise that aba is often times a very good form of therapy that has really good results right? or have you been 'brainwashed' by (probably) other autistic people, (or your own experience) that it is bad just because it was used *wrongly* or on somebody who didn't need it.
dont hate the therapy cause the therapist doesn't know how to administer it and don't try to join in on the idea that it should just be banned completely because you are literally then contributing to the deaths of thousands of autistic people who otherwise would've gotten help but instead didn't get the help they need and became depressed and killed themselves because of the affect autism has on their day to day life.

    • @Plantrum
      @Plantrum 2 роки тому +10

@@phantompizza Ok, lets take this one point at a time.
1.) You think I was always "mildly autistic"? Mate, I was practically non-verbal till I was seven. And even now, I tend not to verbally talk unless its necessary.
2.) Im not denying the effectiveness of ABA. I had it. It was stupidity effective. But just because something is effective doesn't mean its good. Sulfuric acid is a great way to kill a mosquito, but for oviouse reasons, you shouldn't use it. A chain saw is a brilliant way to open a can of beans. Doesn't mean I'm pouring in the gasoline for a iron rich meal. Aba is a great was to make someone "less autistic". Doesn't mean the benefit outweighs the damage. Because everything you can get from ABA, you can get by a combo of OT, Speech Therapy, and a few others. And none of those washes someone of there personality and happiness.
3.) If you are praising the electric brainwave therapy, then I shall point and laugh. How do you think it would feel to have your brain electrically redirected? Even if I give you the card of it being painless, nobody knows for sure what someone with autism needs to function. You could just fuck things up more, or drastically change their personality. And of course, you have no say in what happens. After all, only you will suffer if the therapy is botched. You don't fuck with the brain directly. Period. I don't care if its some kind of surgery, some kind of blunt force, or even some simple stimulus, if you mess with the brain directly, your therapy has the potential to be harmful and thus suck.
4.) "Suicidal thoughts is a symptom of autism"? I really don't mean to be rude, but are you stupid? We have to put up with so much bullshit by people who think we are some aliens, and when we develop depression from the constant discrimination, you think its because its a symptom? By both of our logic, the therapy would work, but there is a more simple way; treat us like humans and excuse our odd tendencies. We are weird, but have the common goal to belong. And if society wasn't so hellbent on acting like we are diseased, we maybe wouldn't have that problem of "we want to die".
One last thing: what is your relationship with autism? Are you yourself autistic? Is one of your close family members autistic?

I'm not autistic (but adhd, so technically i'm not "neurotypical" either), but the way people talk about autism (autistic children especially) just doesn't sit right with me.
Why is it always the kid that has to adapt and change for others? Why not try to adapt to the kids needs? Why is the focus always on how it affects OTHER PEOPLE (parents, teachers, siblings, whoever) rather than the kid himself. It all seems so dehunanizing.

Well as an autistic person who has worked on changing their behavior, I can see where your coming from, but in my opinion, if no one was focused on adjusting my behavior I would not have the friends I do today, I would not be in a functional loving relationship right now. And if my family and friends decided not to work on my negative symptoms, I would look back and resent them for it. I wanted to change and so do most autistic people. Autism is not just a corky personality trait, it is the result of severe oxidative stress, so wanting to change the negatives that come with that oxidative stress is natural and “right” in my opinion.

I think at best it's an option for struggling parents but not a cure. There is no such thing as problem children. If a child acts out there is always an underlying cause and that's the problem.

@@Blarnix how is this preventing? The therapy in the video is designed to alter behavior and neural function. Also, all adults with autism were once children with autism. And these children everyone is looking to cure will grow up to be: adults with autism. Language matters. Essentially, looking for prevention =looking to make these adults not exist. That is wrong. We either need a better way of phrasing these things or a better angle to support these individuals. And my best guess is that we need to start by talking directly with those adults. It should go something like this "Hey, you are an important member of this planet. What can your fellow (wo)man do that would actually help improve your daily life?" And then of course, we'd have to listen.

That was a cruel pseudoscience. NeuraLink, and studies like this will soon provide an answer. The brain uses electrical pulses to work and we cannot compare this study and ones advancing after this like shock therapy experienced decades ago with zero accountability. I do love my child the way he is despite the tantrums and meltdowns but just like you I want to ensure he can also be self sufficient in society when I’m no longer around. The entire population will not share the same love and patience as parents do for their kids. The money you spend on alternative medicine can be saved up for his future services. If prayer gives you comfort then why not. There are many pseudoscience services ripping off desperate parents. Stem cell therapy in the Philippines, all these herbal stuff, certain frequencies, nuro-feedback. These are nonsense. There has not been a cure found as yet. I accepted that and has not given up on what future technological advances can provide my son. For now I save up for him for when I’m not here or for when a therapy is available and may be costly. You have a big heart and I hate to see good people being taken advantage of. All the best to you and your son.

Since people with such differences can't just turn their differences off, it's better to find a cure for those people. So they can be normal too. There is no room for any sort of major differences in this modern world.

@6eq uj5 Those people happened to have autism. Certain levels of autism appear to be a necessary but not sufficient trait to think of breakthroughs in certain fields one reason that has been proposed as to why that is is because people with autism take in more stimuli that's why some “flap their arms, ” because they are “overloaded” with stimuli the reason this is beneficial, is that they can therefore see more connections between things and come up with novel ideas. Obviously, this can have downsides it can be harder to be accepted socially because they are different. But the answer is not to waste millions maybe even billions of dollars trying to completely get rid of something that will inevitably slow the progress of human civilization but instead to find treatments for severe autism and to make “normies” more understanding about the role autism plays within individuals lives and society as a whole.

Because autism highly influences the way I see the world, how I think, behave and feel. It is a big part of who I am and if I were cured, I wouldn`t be me anymore. And I am valid and important the way I am. Autism is nothing wrong, it doesn`t need to be cured. At least not for me. There might be other autistic people who come to the conclusion throughout of their life, who often really suffer from apraxia, that they maybe want some form of a treatment for parts of their autism. That's great for you, you are clearly high functioning, HOWEVER... say that to the adults and children with SEVERE autism.. Who can't even dress themselves or feed themselves... Who can't say a single word... Who are so spaced out it's like talking to a brick wall... I'm sure the parents and carers for those individuals would LOVE a CURE

This is truth. I am worried about what happens when I am gone, don't want to change, cool. My son is limited to almost no speech and may not be able to ask for help most of the time, cook, drive and many small everyday activities that we do to live a productive life. He is by far not the worst, but neither can he live on his own and as a parent, you know NOONE will know or treat you child better than you and there are horror stories that bring tears to this grown man's eyes.

@HANNAH COATES Thank you for your response and while I disagree on somethings I fully appreciate you taking the time out to answer me. If my son could respond like you AND still had certain behaviors I would no more change him than take out my molars without anesthesia. He is 7, I can read his behaviors others not so much and that includes family. With speech comes more understanding and with understanding more freedom. He knows movies he wants to watch, food he does/doesn't want to eat clothes to wear. My need for him to change doesn't stem from embarrassment of him, but my want for him to lead a better life or the best life he can. So, I disagree with those who cannot voice their thoughts may not want to change. I know for a fact that not being able to express oneself can lead to frustration and more violent behavior. That is not just from my son, but just being a human. I thought that some of your reservations were of the procedure itself. Again, thank you for your time and opinion and know that even though I don't know you I hope my son can be someday able to communicate like you and that I support you

mrsoready he likes to be mute though, it's part of his personality at the end of the day. I'm autistic and while I can reply like this, in real life I am mute sometimes. I like being mute, I know you why talking is such a privilege, but he doesn't want that. It's part of him and speech isn't everything. He might improve. I think a cure for autism is unethical. If there was an ethical way of doing it, then it would be nice for him to talk but there probably will never be an ethical way. Also, once it causes your child's personality to change, he will probably lose memories too because it will completely change him. You know what I mean? The techniques to cure autism being studied atm are unethical, forcing kids to maintain eye contact is an example of something they are trying. Traumatising to autistic kids. Autism makes them communicate differently, but it isn't a bad thing

    • @mrsoready

My son is a little less advanced, my son cannot take care of himself on his own if I died or my wife died today and he damn sure cannot respond like you can. His memory may change, my may change for all that. If you are autistic and able to live life on your own that is wonderful and needs to be celebrated and not changed.
