I remember watching this as a little girl when this came out and thinking, “wow, this is one handsome man” and now I’m watching it as an adult for like the hundredth time and thinking, “wow, what a handsome man”

If you're taking what he's telling Maroni at face value. It could be that he's still just putting him on. After all, the entire line is about how this ordinary mask is only capable of frightening the mentally ill--but that's not actually the point.

I once dressed up as Dr. Crane/Scarecrow for Halloween and went to a pub crawl with my friends. I wore a business suit and carried the mask in a leather briefcase. When I got to the first pub, the girls who were going to sign me in asked me "Why are you all dressed up like you're going to work?" When was there ever going to be a better time for me to quote Scarecrow? "Would you like to see my mask? *Pops briefcase open*" They didn't get it. :(

I love Crane's reaction here. It's the reaction of someone who's been bullied in the past especially when he says "a guy like you".
Yeah. In that moment, his voice just oozed with the emotion of getting the power to finally fight back.
Who knows? Maybe Falcone’s thugs gave his family a hard time when Crane was little, so he relishes the chance to dish it out.

I love 1:10 -the moments before he takes his mask. His body language just screams about the insane super villain so TIRED of having to pretend to be a normal psychiatrist to these people.
And then his restrained glee as he gets the mask out and gets to be himself for a few moments. Good stuff.

Cillian Murphy's apparent handsomeness is no accident. He auditioned for the role of Bruce Wayne, a handsome playboy. He lost the part to Bale, but Nolan still wanted to cast him, thus we have our Scarecrow
Interestingly, Heath Ledger also auditioned for the role of Bruce Wayne.

I love how he stares down Falcone as the camera keeps zooming in on Cranes face, it starts to become clear that something is different about him...., you can see how he has zero fear of the man who is supposed to be the most feared in Gotham. It's a great scene exemplifying how the villains of Gotham were about to escalate to new heights.
Literally that scene alone when he is staring blankly like his mind is somewhere else just thinking about scaring him is really showing he is really past humanity really creepy scene

Cillian Murphy is just the master of being intimidating.

His character is more about control. He knows how people think, knows their fears. Even though he's less physically imposing than a lot of characters in this world, he has an advantage. He knows it and keeps his poker face until time to strike.
He would make a great Sauron in Rings of Power in his Annatar form

This was one of the best villain introductions of the entire Nolan-Batman franchise. I remember wondering just who this guy was right up to this point. When the mask came out and the hallucinogen gas came out, it all of a sudden hits you. That’s the Scarecrow, hiding in plain sight.
The fact that he was named Doctor Crane didn’t tip you off?

Notice the respect and fear Scarecrow has for Ra's in this scene. You can see that he fears him in that scene when Batman gassed Scarecrow and Batman turned into this Demon thing... "Ra's Al Ghul = Head of the Demon"
Cillian Murphy killed it as Dr. Crane/Scarecrow. He looks like a very weak man but gives off such a sinister vibe with just a stare, particularly when Falcone calls him out for experimenting on patients.
I can imagine a bit of dialogue where somebody can't believe a guy like him is scary, even with the mask on. They are inside a room with him and one of the goons is like "This guy is Scarecrow? There's nothing scary about him" and then the fear gas pours into the room through the ventilation and Crane replies "Oh but there is. Your mind just doesn't know it yet" and then the guy starts screaming

Me: Uhm no. Cause when you put it on I cant see your pretty face anymore.

What's so Great about this ending is that all the villains lose, and all the heroes win.
Ra's Al Ghul: His attempt to destroy Gotham fails both in Begins when Gotham is not destroyed by fear, fear which Scarecrow represented in it's fullest as well as in Rises when Talia, his daughter, fails to destroy the city with the bomb. However, his training of Bruce allows him to have created a true legend that would become the image of true justice. Bruce's faith in good prevails over Ra's and Talia's cynical viewing of Gotham.
Bane: Though he manages to break Bruce's body, he fails to destroy his spirit which rises to victory from the pit. Bruce manages to find the strength to embrace the fear of death, and in doing so he finds self worth which allows him to climb out of the hole that he has been trapped in his entire life. Bruce is then able to have something worth fighting for, and this allows him to finally "stop" Bane.
Joker: The Joker had managed to tarnish the idea of Batman by making it represent something to fear and hate. Through his implementation of chaos, he destroyed Bruce's life by killing Rachel and made Batman have to fall, leaving Bruce in defeat when Batman finally had to break his morality, and his one rule, in order to kill Harvey Dent to save Gordon's son. However, even when his chaos finally became realized through Bane's rule and even as Gotham "burned" with anarchy, the hope for Batman to return and enduring faith in justice ultimately prevailed and thus his destructive legacy was finally defeated and replaced with honorable justice, the noble idea of Batman, restored to Gotham.
Selina: Selina represents an "adaptable" survivor in Gotham. She manages to move in and out of the moral gray as "Catwoman" in order to survive, though she doesn't want to pursue this forever. Even as the promises of Bane were given to the people, she realized that it was an excuse to forsake the ideals of good since deep down she wanted to start a new clean life. She realized that "the fire" that would erupt would be the flames of chaos and that running would be "letting the world burn", This helped her learn to care for something outside of herself. This finally gave her the strength to be reborn, and thus pursue "a clean state" with Bruce and leave her past without scars.
Alfred: Bruce's struggle to discover the strength to move past his parent's murder and ultimately find a life for himself, was Alfred's struggle. Since he was the only family Bruce had, he made himself promise that he would raise Bruce as his own son. Alfred helps Bruce attempt to remain his identity as "Bruce Wayne" and not just Batman. When Rachel, the only connection Bruce had to his previous identity before his parents' murder was destroyed both symbolically and physically, Alfred had to finally make his "son" face reality by leaving him, forcing him to find a life outside the cave. This devastated him, but he finally realized that he made the right decision when he finds Bruce with Selina, far from the past of Gotham City. Now that Bruce has moved on, Alfred feels closure knowing that his duty is fulfilled.
Lucius: Bruce may have discovered the will to become Batman from Ra's Al Ghul, but Lucius was the one who ensured that he truly was something more by making him the strongest and best equipped hero he could be. By helping Bruce become what he needs to be, not only does he find a purpose for himself as Wayne Enterprises tries to "keep him out of trouble." He is one of the first to help Bruce return to being Batman due to his strong friendship, and he manages to learn his valuable role in Batman's life when he discovers that his technology was useful, he also feels a sense of closure.
Gordon: Gordon represents Gotham's heart itself. On the surface, he appears to be controlling the city with order, however it becomes apparent that deep corruption has taken hold of the city and therefore impedes Gotham's ability to enact true justice. That is why he is so connected to Batman, because he comes to learn that Gotham needs help against the corrupt mob. However, in his blindness he refuses to believe that the corruption affects him, which leads to the ultimate destruction of Harvey Dent, the white knight. He finally pays for his mistakes when Bane's revolution threatens to destroy Gotham, and only with Batman can he save the city he protects. When justice is restored, Gotham finally has a symbol it can believe in since it saved Gotham without being corrupted, and this brings peace to Gordon.
Blake: The ideal cop, Blake also represents a mixture between Gordon and Batman in terms of justice. Blake is a cop, and he believes in both the principles and "the structures" of justice, but he also knows what it's like to be an orphan and he manages to prioritize the ideals of justice over the "structures." Even when he resigns from the Police Force, realizing that the "structures have become shackles" which impose on the rightful legacy of Bruce Wayne, he retains faith in justice. Therefore, if crime ever did return to Gotham City, he would have to strength to rise into the symbol of Batman should the need arise.
Bruce: Bruce goes through a quest to rediscover humanity as he takes on the persona of Batman. In order to find the means to fight injustice, he goes on a journey that pushes everything to the limit. His will is tested by Ra's, his morality is tested by the Joker, and Bane tests his spirit. As he struggles to protect his city, which he loves, he allows himself to be tested by all these individuals. He finally triumphs though and he manages to make Batman a symbol to believe in, all the while finally managing to find the strength to leave his past behind and embrace a new life.
I know this is a lot to read, and I doubt anyone is actually reading this, but if you are, I thank you. I just wanted to explain how amazing this trilogy is by going into detail about how all the characters interact in the story. Peace.

I love how when Falcone starts listing off things that Crane has done you can subtly see the anger and annoyance in his face until he finally decides enough is enough and gasses him. This version of Scarecrow is a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde character and I love it.

I always love his “Would you like to see my mask?” line. Sure, everyone remembers “You wanna know how I got these scars?” more, but it’s sort of expected that the Joker has some complicated past, and in The Dark Knight it’s more of his way to make people feel tense.
Murphy’s Crane feels a lot more jarring when he’s been set up as more docile, more “normal”, this harmless-looking pretty boy who’s helping the investigations, and just brings up a mask out of nowhere. The fact that the mobster doesn’t even get a proper word in edgewise after he changed the topic, coupled with the rising music, really underscores how he takes complete control of the situation.
Cillian does some damn good acting here! He's one of those truly amazing performers of this generation

When I first watched this movie I was first getting into batman and didnt know who Scarecrow or Dr. Crane was. I never knew that character even existed. This scene completely caught me off gaurd. Ive been obsessed with scare crow ever since. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. What an awesome way to introduce a villain.
I really like how he was used in this movie, despite him barely being involved in the third act. He was the first major threat to Batman and almost killed him by setting him on fire.
My biggest complaint about this movie wasn't enough Scarecrow. Especially during the Arkham breakout, could of been amazing to have extra scenes of him going around terrorizing citizen, officers, and inmates.. Then end with a fight with Batman but is able to escape due to Batman being forced to go after Raz instead.
Absolutely. He definitely should be the false main antagonist while in the film it’s still sort of that way as he is the placeholder villain before the Ras reveal at the end but he absolutely deserves more scenes like you said.

No, I think the ball was dropped in TDK. This movie set him up so well but then he was just reduced to a two bit drug pusher that batman dealt with in five minutes. Such a shame.
The theme of this movie is fear, so it makes sense that Scarecrow is the main villain. But no, it's got to be Liam Neeson.

Crane was truly the Scarecrow in all 3 movies. In this he wore the mask, and used fear gas. In The Dark Knight, he made one last stand. In TDKR, he stood high and mighty in his cornfields of injustice like a scarecrow.

In Batman begins, he made an excellent introduction. In the other two, he had a 10 second cameo that had nothing to do with his character.
I watched Oppenheimer two weeks ago (once on film and once in IMAX laser) and just WOW. Time has been kind to Cillian, but even so, he's so young here.
This is probably the first thing I saw him in, such a fantastic actor and was really excited when he finally got his big leading role in Oppenheimer!!

The last 20 seconds of this scene freaked me out in the theater at the young age of 10, and subsequently Dr. Crane/Scarecrow became one of my new favorite movie villains. The movie was pretty formative and reignited my love for Batman seeing his origin story done so well, and intense! It's been wonderful to see Cillian and Nolan's collabs since, finally getting to star in one this year and will surely be nominated for Best Actor. Great to see him be so recognized now! Nolan is my favorite director and he certainly deserves at least one Oscar for Oppenheimer as well.
I love how Cillian subtly acts that he’s not impressed intimidated , or remotely threatened by Falcone.
In another scene when Falcone wants something from Crane and Crane denies him.
He reminds Crane his gang are bringing in the shipments and Crane replies “we’re paying you for that”
To me the line really is “ *Sigh* we’re paying you for that, you idiot”
it's a nice contrast to earlier in the film when Falcone was arrogantly musing to Bruce about the power of fear, turns out he is not actually in control even when he thought he was.
Falcone may be a big fish in Gotham, but to Ra's Al Ghul he is nothing but another criminal no different than the common thief or murderer except he is temporarily marginally useful because of that power he has for now.
Falcone may the muscle but Ras and Crane are clearly the brains of the organization lol
@@MrMusicGuy1980 That makes this scene especially karmic. Falcone acted like he was on top of the world and Bruce was in over his head. Now, Falcone is in over his head and a new villain is stepping up. Plus, he’s done in by the same power he bragged about earlier: fear.
I love every moment of this trilogy.
First two were perfect. Third was too cartoony and feministy.

Man this is such an amazing rendition of scarecrow, it was such a huge bummer how an actually really scary and imposing antagonist got taken out by a civilian who just happened to have a taser, what a terrible way to best him and make him turn completely harmless for the rest of the story.
He was influenced by the gas. She wasn't.

Oppenheimer somehow got younger and went from making the atomic bomb to making fear toxin to fight the Batman and calls himself, Scarecrow.

"Never judge a book by its cover!" I actually notice in lot's of movies, shows, and ironically books! Scarecrow was my personal favorite from the movies! Highly Intelligent, A civilized demeanor, and was able to basically trick professionals he worked around by just looking like a "Normal, harmless, intelligent nerd!"
