    I grew up in NJ but now live in Southern California so that won't help you much ;). The rule of thumb is that if there is more than two inches of dirt on the bottom the pool needs to be drained (which is rare but sounds like your situation). What type of pool filter do you have and how much stuff is still on the bottom? Also how is your chlorine reading?

    I have the sta-rite DE filter and have learned after season 1 of new ownership to stay on the light side of the DE additive. For the first year I was putting the exact amount in lbs. of recommended and I was having all kinds of issues with pump variable speed pump trying to prime properly and basically the DE filter had too much DE and was working too hard. Trying to learn and understand the DE filter I took apart and cleaned the filter 3 times last year, the final time for end of season winter storage. Every time I noticed an absurd amount of sludge and more than adequate coating of the filter. You expect some of the DE to drop to the bottom inside the filter when water is drained from it, but not the amount I had. And it is just nasty stuff. I had to shovel it out of the street this year because where I was cleaning the filter - it didn't wash away and was like concrete this year. So, now - this year I am doing a couple scoops less and getting great filtration and pump and everything is working as it should.

    D.E. works great & is the best filter element out there. I never use the fiber stuff - there is just no need for it. D.E. is environmentally friendly although most cities don't like it going into the street and then the drains out to the Ocean (they will fine you up to $10,000). It needs to go directly into the sewer. Conspiracy theory: it saves them money as they don't need to charge their filtration as much as they get your used D.E. for free...I hose it off into the grass w/ no ill effects.

    I'm new to the pool life, and enjoying it! As far as the maintenance and care of my pool, i'm finding your videos invaluable! So, thank you! Question about DE: if DE is such a carcinogen, do cities regulate where you can backwash? When I backwashed onto the street the other day I noticed DE residue in the street and was concerned about the kids who play there. Now maybe there wasn't that much, but I live in Phoenix, and there are almost 2 million pools here. Doing the math... would you be concerned?

  • @SPL

    I've heard the same think about Cartridge filters too. I just don't think it works. The grids for a D.E. are made specifically for the D.E. and I don't think it will do anything in the sand filter since the Lateral in the filter just doesn't look like it can be coated with the D.E. I don't see how it will work.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    It shouldn't. I am actually working on a Sand Filter video and one we we check for leaks in by adding D.E. to it. If the Lateral is cracked the D.E. will return to the pool. How much D.E. are we talking about - say for a large sand filter with 300-400 lbs of sand? I would like to try it.

    All filter manufacturers as well as DE suppliers advise dissolving the DE in a pool-water filled bucket prior to adding it to the skimmer. This will prevent clumping and clogging of the grid elements.

    • @kirkwilson5905
      @kirkwilson5905 7 місяців тому

      If you are using clean and new POOL de this really makes no difference. POOL de will not clump and as soon as it gets wet it fully "disintegrates". It is a fully unnecessary step that is a pita and makes more of a mess. Not to mention the DE has to pass through the pump before it gets to the filter. If you think DE will clump and pass through a pump then you do not know how pump impellers work. Also of note: Backwashing does not remove all of the de, so if you charge your filter with the full amount of de you are essentially over charging the filter and you will likely experience higher pump pressure with less flow. Repeated backwashing without a tear down cleaning can exacerbate the issue.

    That sounds about right - I think they made two large models a VA- 38 and A VA-52 so eight scoops falls right in the middle of both sizes. The VA-38 IS 38 sq ft and the VA-52 is 52 sq ft is a filter. There was no 45 model...

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    If your theory is correct and 6 lbs = 6 scoops, then if you have a 10 lb bag of D.E. - after taking out 6 scoops you should be able to weigh the bag on a scale and it will be 4 lbs in total weight after the 6 scoops. But that is not the case. Since D.E. is a fluffy powder it actually would take a 2 lbs coffee can to equal 1 actual pound of D.E.. So the 1lb pound Aladdin scoop would be 1/2 lb of D.E in each scoop. After taking 12 scoops out of a 10lb bag it will weigh 4 lbs. Confusing as heck ;)

  • @erickrhernandez1451

    I hear what your saying (referring to the amount of DE) but how did you determine this? I was told that you have to round it off. Example if I’m using a 1LB bucket, if the area sq ft is 48, you should pour in 5 scoops of DE. If the area sq ft is 36, you should pour in 4 scoops of DE. Is this wrong?

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    The only model that requires less is a Quad DE filter. If it as FNS Plus add the amount I show in the video. I have new filters on my route and nothing has changed.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    The Pentair FNS Plus Manual states 6 lbs. of D.E. or 12 1 lbs. coffee cans so it is correct (pg.5 ). Not sure where Leslie's get's their 7.5 lbs. number from. That is about 15 1 lbs. coffee cans... I suggest the Aladdin Scoop as the most accurate way to add D.E. to your filter.

    I found an easy way to reinstall DE filter pads that needs to be shared. I don’t do videos so perhaps you can add this to one of yours. I was one of those who struggled with getting my Hayward filter pads realigned after taking them off the manifold. There was always one or two that would leak DE back into the pool on completion. I thought one or more may have torn but it turned out the filter pads weren’t seated properly to the manifold. I found it by running the pump in the backwash mode (cover off) and seeing water leaking from several of the connections. After disassembling I turned the manifold upside down, started with the short pad and worked clockwise outside to inside making sure all pads were well seated into the manifold and there correct spacers. The hardest part was getting the long bolt back into the manifold hole and it wasn’t that bad. All in all this was a much easier task than working from the normal position and no leaks or DE back into my pool. As a side note, I almost purchased a new filter set at $100 plus.

      Too much DE will also cause the DE in the pool issue as well.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    Not sure what the number means - no one to ask as everyone who designed that filter is 6 ft under. From my experience you will be fine with eight scoops. Maybe you want to start to think about replacing that filter with a nice new modern cartridge filter. I bet that Anthony filter will bring about $50 at the scrap metal place ;) And you can sell your grids on Ebay for more $

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    That is rated by the manufacturer as a 25 sq ft DE filter. So you would only need 5 scoops of D.E. - I think there is probably too much D.E. in there if you put the entire bag in...

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    That sounds like a SMBW2024 D.E filter. I would add 4 or 5 scoops of D.E. - i take it the label has worn off identifying the filter size. That is a 24 sq ft D.E. filter.

    It is understandable that the consumer will not know this - the disclosure that Diatomaceous Earth is mixed with crystaline silica is listed very vaguely. The bag mentions that it contains crystaline silica in varying amounts per bag. Most retail sales associates who don't use this in the field never read the fine print. It should be listed on the front in large print and not in microscopic print but it is classified as an occupational hazard -i.e pool guys who use a ton of this stuff ;0

    Alright you wanted to thank you, you're just one of those people that's very easy to listen to. Lol. I got to the back washing portion of this and BAM, you answered my question. I've been dealing with a pool where I think even though I have a new air pump, the guy had been kind of screwing me over that was doing the servicing and he just wore it out too quickly by just not addressing the manifold that he broke and some other things, but anyway, I've been learning how this all works and trying to get it down and it looks as though I have an impeller shaft seal that's leaking and causing some air. Watching you gave me the confidence to not take ppl on their works, alone, and figuring out how it all works. & then repairing it myself! Thanks!

    Thanks for your response to my other question, I have one more question. After the last filter service (grid out) I added 8 cans de. During the add, after 3rd can a brief puff of de came out of the SUCTION HOLES at the bottom of the pool. It stopped and thereafter functioned as normal. No de leaks. Any idea what would cause this unusual occurance? Thanks! I would guess about a qtr to a half CUP of de.
    The navigator sucked it up. Pool clear next day.
    One more, I noticed a couple of grids had the internal skeleton cracked but no holes yet. What BRAND do you like for Hayward. I now have Pleatco & they lasted maybe a few years.
    :)

    • @SPL
      @SPL  7 років тому

      Probably just some air in the line causing the DE to back up out the main drain line. Seen it happen. You can dilute the DE in 5 gallon bucket and slowly pour it in to prevent that in the future. I've used all brands and they basically are the same - Pleatco, Filbur and Unicel. Whichever is the lowest priced 😀

    I have taken over the care of a children's summer day camp pool. I am very confused about how much DE to use. The filter is an old stainless steel Purex Triton Nautilus Plus (NPS-72). Obviously it is a 72 Sq. ft. filter. The label on the filter says to add 11 lbs. of DE. however according to your video I should be adding about 14 lbs. The pool gets heavy use. It is 30x50 and holds about 37,000 gallons of water. Can you give me advice about how much DE to use? Thanks for all your videos, I have learned a lot!!

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 років тому

      I usually will add 12 scoops to a 72 sq ft filter and in your case since it gets heavy use you will be backwashing it frequently - so after a good backwash add 5-6 scoops. I would say after the third backwash take it apart and clean it. You might not get 6 months between cleaning in a pool the big and used that much. Each scoop is actually 1/2 lbs. So you only need to add 6 lbs. Confused yet? - ;)

    Figuring out how much DE to use
    Start by noting the PSI reading on the filter with the pump running.
    Mix 1/4 cup of DE with water in a bucket and pour that slowly into the skimmer. Remove the skimmer sock, if any, before adding DE.
    Give the system about two minutes to stabilize.
    Note the pressure on the filter and repeat the second and third steps until the pressure has gone up by one PSI. This will typically take around 1-2 cups of DE.

  • @stevenzak199
    @stevenzak199 10 років тому +1

    I've been fighting algae, so today I cleaned my 60 sq. ft. filters (also replaced two that had holes) and added 12 scoops of new DE (I hadn't seen your video yet). Notwithstanding all that cleaning and replacing, after running the pump for several hours, I checked back and the pressure had gone up all the way to the top of the gauge (30 lbs). I don't understand why cleaned or replaced grids would so quickly lead to such high pressure. I'm at wits end in dealing with this algae -- and now having pressure so high I had to shut the whole system down.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 років тому +1

      Just give the filter a good backwashing and add 4-5 more scoops of DE. The algae dust clogs up the DE filter grids very quickly as it coats the DE and doesn't allow water to flow through. If after backwashing the same thing happens you will need to clean the filter again. It is a process and you might need two or three cleanings until the algae dust is gone. Nothing to worry about - I see it all the time.

      Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 Thanks for the tips. For some reason, my filter doesn't have the capability of being backwashed. So I guess I'll just have to clean it again. Funny thing is, I asked the store manager at Leslie's (where I bought two new grids yesterday) whether I'd have to clean the filters every couple of days while fighting algae, and she said no, the filter can handle a lot of algae before you need to clean it. I should know better than to ask them anything. Thanks again!

    i took apart my pentair 60 plus de filter and cleaned all grids....then put back together. no rips in grids....manifold good...etc.
    put 6lbs of de as recommended. the question I have is only on the initial adding of de......I get a small amount of de back in...... is it normal to get some de back in pool ? a small amount came back in pool. once I vaccumed.... no more.
    thanks

    • @SPL
      @SPL  8 років тому

      Normal in some cases. If it only happens on initial start up after a cleaning it is probably DE that went back down the suction line when you were taking it apart. Once pool turned on that DE came back in and out the return lines.

    Two questions: Ques. 1) How long should should I let my 60 gal filter run, after I cleaned out my tank, cleaned the grids and added brand new Earth to the filter (10 cups as you suggested)? Ques. 2) You suggested once a month to run the backwash and add about two cups O' earth in the skimmer. Do I use the valve pressure gauge to ensure I have replaced enough earth?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 років тому +1

      For your size pool based on the photos you sent, probably 5-6 hours in the Summer should be enough for one full cycle. If the water looks clear and good you can try lowering the time down a bit more to save $$. Maybe 4-5 hours.
      I only backwash when the pressure gets above 10 psi from when I cleaned it. So if after cleaning you are at 20 psi abnd after 2 months it goes to 30 psi - backwash it. Usually as a rule I add 4-5 scoops back in. There is no hard and fast rule but about half of the initial charge is fine. You just want some DE back in there. I try not to do more than 2 backwashes before I take it apart and clean it again.
      Since your grids are old you might notice the pressure rising quicker. If so then new grids are in order in the near future.

    D.E. is mixed with crystaline silica. On bag: "Breathing crystaline silica dust [ingredient in D.E] over prolonged time ...Inhaled crystaline silica from occupational sources has been classified as carcinogenic to humans (group 1) by the International Agancy for Research of Cancer." According to the manufacturer once the D.E, gets wet the crystaline silica dust is inert, while it is dry and breathable it is a carcinogen.

      I am looking at this schematic: www.poolplaza.com/C-Anthony-Apollo-Filter-Parts.html
      If all the grids are intact then check parts #12, 13, 14. #12 is the elbow - check for any cracks.
      Not sure what part #13 does but if it is missing or damaged DE can leak from here. And last is #14 the air bleeder.
      I would also double check the grids. Interesting thing about these filters is that even with ripped grids they seldom leak DE into the pool - at least from my experience.
      If all those parts check out I wonder if the brass backwash is malfunctioning. Truthfully I haven't serviced one with a working backwash as they seize up over time.
      I would have suggested a new filter vs new grids...

      Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 Thanks for the quick reply. The schematic is for a different filter, ours lays lengthwise... yeah, its old, the filters grids are new. there is a valve attached to one of the pipes that comes from the tank . Not sure what its for. Maybe a backwash valve, i try shutting it but it turns and turns... never bottoming out. so maybe... just can't find information on this system. I have the blue scoop from Leslie's. A lot of people are saying it only holds ~.75 lb, not 1 lb.. I'm trying to figure out how many scoops I need after a backwash for a 60 sq. ft. Hayward. Your guidelines of 3 to 4 scoops assumes that 1 scoop is 1 lb., so I guess I should be adding closer to 5 scoops. Does that sound right to you?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 років тому +1

      The Leslie Scoop is the same as the on in this video. 1 scoop equals 1/2 lb of D.E. So 2 scoops equals 1 lb. When you charge your filter you will use 12 scoops which is 6 lbs. So recharging it with 5 scoops is fine, which would be 2.5 lbs. There is no exact science after a backwashing but the Rule of Thumb is to put 1/2 back in. Hope that isn't more confusing ;).

      @mxrphaseninety 10 років тому

      Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 Thanks for the reply. So are your guidelines for recharging (towards the end of the video) based on a 1/2 lb. or a 1 lb. scoop? If I'm understanding this correctly, you're using a blue 1/2 lb. scoop but the guidelines assume a 1 lb. scoop. Also, I was told that you should gradually taper off the amount you recharge after each backwash, since more and more DE is left in the filter over time. Is that what you recommend? Thanks again.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 років тому

      mxrphaseninety The numbers at the end are for a 1/2 lb scoop. I kept them low on purpose as I find that customers will usually over charge their filters. The low amount on a backwash recharge works perfectly fine. A lot of D.E. remains in the filter. I usually will backwash once, twice maybe before taking it apart. Backwashing is inefficient and yes over time more and more D.E. will build up in the filter. I switched to Perlite recently for all my filters.

    I have the same question. My Purex 4000 series filter says to put in 6lbs. It looks to be the same filter as the one you are showing here.
    I have an OceanBlue branded DE scoop that says it is 1lb for each scoop. So I also would assume that 6lbs or 6 scoops is enough using this scoop I have.
    The 1lb scoop I have looks to be the same size as yours. Makes me think that the Aladdin instructions are a bit off. Could it be dependent on the brand of DE?

    Have you ever thought about Cellulose Fiber? My company here in Austin has a lot of D.E. filters that don't have a waste line that leads to the sewers. Most of them have a backwash hose that i extend to a corner of their yard, so it seems cellulose fiber would be better because it is biodegradable and safer for the environment. Have you ever tried using it?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 років тому

      Don't really use it myself but I suppose I can film a video test with it and then take it apart in 6 months to see how it does vs D.E. Technically D.E. is fine for the yard - it is the chlorine coming out of the pool from a backwashing that can kill the lawn & plants I rinse D.E. filter grids off in the grass all the time. Been doing it for several years with the only complaint coming from the gardeners ;)

      That would be really cool because i don't think anybody has done something like that yet. Also i wish we were worried about the grass dying but my problem and his problem is the fact he has 2 small children that play in the yard. I don't want it to have any effect on them especially if they breathe it in or something.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 років тому

      Aaron Ware Yes, that is an issue once the D.E. dries again. Supposedly it becomes inert after it is coated with dirt but I don't buy it. I've swapped out perfectly working D.E. filters on several of my accounts with cartridge filters for that very reason. Usually I won't mention that it can cause lung disease and has a cancer causing element in it - I focus on the mess factor and that cartridge filters are much cleaner. That usually does the trick. 9 out of 10 times the customer is also tired of all the D.E. in their yard. I guess the Trump Card is the fact that it is unsafe if you have to play it...

      With those small filters once they get full and with algae that is pretty quick - you will need to stop vacuuming and clean the cartridge. Also check to see if cartridge is seated correctly. DE won't help and may make it worse.

    • @VaingloriousVagabond
      @VaingloriousVagabond 10 років тому

      yes de is not intended for cartridge filters. Cartridge filters dont filter as fine as de; De will filter the smallest particles out of your pool down to 2-3 microns so i recommend to anyone that has "passing" problems to just get a good used or new DE filter with backwash will solve many of your problems remember if anything but clear water is coming out your jets then you have a filter issue either it is put together wrong, a piece has a hole or crack, or you have a cartridge filter, check the little tube on your cartridge filter if it doesnt have a screen on it, then that is your leak, its common on cartridge to have that screen break then u get problems you can just plug that little hole and you will be alright..

      Again, thank you for your help. When you say, the tank lid may be stripped. do you mean right where the pressure gauge screws in? By the way, the gauge "reads" about 25lbs. We backwash every three months.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  11 років тому

      John Ferguson The gauge should move up about 10 psi as the filter gets dirty. Especially a D.E. filter. Cartridge filters get less movement in the gauge.You can order a factory gauge online I suppose unless the price is dramatically higher than Pinch A Penny. Try putting some waterproof silicone on the threads along with Teflon tape. The top of some filters get stripped out as they get older. If it is not a giant leak the silicone may stop it.

    Thank you for your videos. I have a question. I have a Hayward EC65 bump filter that requires as per manual 6 lbs of DE. The filter is 27sq. Your video instructions shows Aladdin scoop states 5 sq = 1 scoop for vertical filters and 1 scoop for 7 1/2 sq for bump filters, (which I have). My question is if the manual of the filter states 6 lbs, am I adding 6 scoops? or as your video calculation 3.6 scoops (3.6x 7.5= 27). My pool is a 16x32 app 21000 gallons. I run a Hayward variable speed pump usually on low speed for 18 hours. I sometimes find my water cloudy too. Try to keep my chemicals in line with pool calculator. Not sure if is the same as mine - could be a 1 lbs scoop - I know they make them - any marking on the bottom?

    • @eostrike
      @eostrike 8 років тому

      In my link above I added the bottom of my scoop. No labels other than Leslie's sticker. I originally commented only because these bags/boxes of DE say to use more than what the filter manufacturer says to use. Though it may be fine it throws money down the drain (or skimmer :-)) if the required amount is pounds less.

    • @SPL

      Let it settle and then vacuum it up. Then take the filter apart and hose off the cartridges. You should be fine.

    Hi,
    When I run the filter the DE powder goes back to the pool. I uninstalled, open the whole thing, clean it, inspected, there;s no rips on the grids anywhere (it's a new set of grids just bought last year). What do I do wrong? what's might be a problem? Thank you for your help.

    I’m confuse. Doesn’t the label tell you how many scoops of DE to put in the skimmer?

      It will tell you the pounds of DE to add. The smaller scooper is 1/2 of DE.

    For those without a dedicated DE measuring cup: 1 lb of DE by weight = 48 oz in (loose) volume: 6 cups, 3 pints, or 1-1/2 quarts
    There are rules-of-thumb, but the best rule is to follow what the filter manufacturer says. I have a Hayward ec65a whose filter area is 27 sq ft. If you use the divide-by-6 rule, that’s 4-1/2 lbs; if you use the divide-by-7 rule, that’s just under 4 lbs. However, the manufacturer insists on 6 lbs. So who’s right? The manufacturer, always.
    That said, after backwashing, best to use 75% to 80% of that total, which is really for a filter completely cleared of all DE. So in this case, it comes down to 4.5 to 4.8 lbs, which is close to the divide-by-6 rule. Voila!

      After adding the De do we always have to do backwashing ?

    • @tishtashtishtash
      @tishtashtishtash Рік тому

      @@amysalvador4460 it’s the opposite: After backwashing, you always add about 80% of the requirement of a completely cleaned out filter.

    If my filter takes 8 skoops of DE. After I backwash do I have to put another 8 skoops in or does some DE remain?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  9 років тому +1

      Andrew Attard 4 scoops would be fine. Figure you lose about half the DE in a backwash.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 років тому

      If you mean six of these scoops no - that is about 3.5 lbs. Each scoop of dry DE with the scooper in the video is 1/2 lb of DE. So two scoops equal 1 lb of DE. 6 scoops is 3 lbs.
