    I was in a “gifted program” in 2nd grade and it was basically just dropping me in a higher grade’s class because I was breezing through the work. Eventually they just wanted to put me in 5th grade permanently but my parents wanted me to be with kids my age. I would’ve graduated at 14 but ended up a dropout bc of mental illness😭😭😭

      This happens allllll too often. Gifted kids usually don’t end up doing good in high school because school doesn’t actually nurture those kids. They just want to keep kids busy and working.

      Same here. I think in high school it’s necessary for more advanced topics and college-level thinking if you’re there, but I don’t think primary school kids should be separated. If they’re more advanced they can skip a grade or take on additional material, but I think they should still be among their peers for the majority of the time. However, having experienced that myself I can understand feeling isolated and unchallenged for years and see why some may prefer a gifted program

    • @summerangel107o
      @summerangel107o Рік тому +4

      @@mirb2093 also wanted to add, the “skipping a grade” isn’t always offered. At the primary school I work at, this isn’t allowed. In these cases, how do you propose this issue be addressed. As you mentioned, being unchallenged for years can be isolating. Ultimately, school should be for everyone, and kids whether they’re on the higher end, lower end, or somewhere in between should all have opportunities to access education that meets their needs.

    • @mirb2093
      @mirb2093 Рік тому

      @@summerangel107o Yeah I’m aware which is why I ultimately understand having the program for those children. I very distinctly remember how drained & honestly bored I felt in those classes compared to how much more prepared & encouraged I felt academically in later more challenging classes.

      I think they should have as little testing as possible because you don't do testing when you get out of school so it's not a skill you need in the real world. When you apply a job, they don't quiz you on the history of the company & grade you.
      You need to have skills or knowledge of some kind. So I think instead of all this testing, it would be more realistic and much more beneficial when kids can *show* their types of intelligences and what subjects they're better at in different ways. They can do a presentation, write an essay, do a group project, make a diorama, act out a historical event dramatically, or like Jacob did, make a rap based on it. All of those things demonstrate their knowledge instead of just getting the right answer on a quiz.
      There are so many ways for kids to show their intelligence and so many different types of intelligence. Some people are going to do really well in some subjects and some just aren't their strong suit. Take me, I'm fantastic at things like English, drama & art. But I'm terrible with math, science and technology. I'm also a people person with good interpersonal skills & I wanted to work with kids. So I have a job teaching preschoolers and I love to do art projects with them every day.
      While understand the gifted program can be a goal to work towards-and that is a real-life skill, to work towards a goal-some people being gifted & some people being not gifted I think just sets up people to be in competition with each other when they should really be focusing on their strength versus weaknesses and figuring out what those each are instead of worrying about what everyone else is doing & not feeling good enough.

      I feel like roasting only works when people are only calling out things that are benign enough to be considered normal in any other setting. The gifted program's if handled correctly, can be great! My daughter was in the program at her public school, and they held some of the classes on Saturday mornings. The purpose was to engage them when some regular grade level lessons were not challenging them. She did well and moved on to Gifted and AP classes in middle and high school. And she stopped saying to me that school was boring 😅

    As a teacher, I didn’t agree with this episode- gifted programs are meant to meet the needs of advanced students who unfortunately aren’t being challenged at all in the regular gen Ed class. Just the same as students who have IEPs and need specialized services to meet their needs. When you have students in elementary who read at a 12th grade level, always get done early, and in general aren’t challenged at all because the work is just too easy - I think there should be something, so they can be challenge, and taught at their level. It’s never meant to be something that makes other kids feel excluded or left out. I think in those instances, it’s still important to have engaging and effective lessons for gen Ed that will meet their level, so it doesn’t feel like other kids are “getting something” while others are not. I digress, I love that Gregory referred to “multiple intelligences” in this episode. Once you understand the best way you can learn and understand subjects, and new concepts - it gets easier, when information is presented to you in that way, as all of learning needs differ. Incorporating these as learning stations is one way to include more than 1 learning style in an individual lesson.

    Technically I wouldn't say the gifted program was for the "smart" kids, I was apart of it but sucked at math. It was just that we thought differently than the average person. We would go around about way to find the answer, like for most people they would go 2+2=4 whereas a gifted kid would be like 1+1=2 which means 2+2+=4. I never thought I was smarter than anybody else. Some kids in the program happened to geniuses, some, like me were creative thinkers who would still suck at a certain subject. It works best if the school acknowledge it but made sure to help the kids understand that nobody was less than the others. We just had to have a creative way of teaching us and doing things.

    One thing I don’t like about this episode is they got the gifted program. Now do most schools use it wrong yes. I was a gifted student but now as a teacher and talking to gifted teacher I know more about it. Gifted is a part of special education. And it does in fact test multiple intelligences. Not every gifted student is textbook smart. Some are but some aren’t but they’re gifted in other ways. I’ve taught a student who academically low and had an IEP but was also in gifted. The problem is some people use gifted as a classist or elitist thing when it’s not. It’s truly a program to help different minds.

      The fact is that gifted program kids get resources and opportunities that the other kids don’t get, bc of the systematic underfunding of schools. Things like field trips, projects with expensive materials, etc. When I was in the gifted program we literally had a special ASL teacher come in to teach us sign language while the other kids sat back in regular class and did worksheets. That inequality is the main message of this episode, and I think they cover that pretty well.
