    I've lived in Croydon and it's so mixed that there is no Croydon accent just like there is no London or British accent.

      There's a London accent

      But somehow a distinct way of speaking evolves and you can hear differences in various parts of a town.

      @martha sheilds NUP, all the white posh to upper class & those with class didn't leave for just Essex but also places along the East coast like Deal to name some. Also those from lower classes left due to high costs. I'm a historian so if you want to discuss this I will bring facts and back them with sources such as published, peer-reviewed scientific/historical research and books.

    Theres no croydon accent most people either sound a bit cockney/white working-class, have a MLE accent, or speak a bit posh

  • @nonsense9911
    @nonsense9911 3 роки тому +7

    I would say most of South and East London speak typically cockney however because of diversity there, it's only now a London accent and some variation of a twang in their speech. North London sound different as they don't like to use full words, as for West London, thats completely different, they don't have a specific accent because of huge cultural diversity because of how big west london is

      It must have changed then as when I was a kid we used to go from Croydon to see the Pearly Kings parade, and their accent was definitely different to ours. A bit harsher, and definitely louder, I think.

    Personally I do think there is a Croydon accent, which tends to be a mix of working-class south London and the "Multicultural London English". It is usually (but not always) distinguishable when hearing long time Croydonians from other Londonders or people from Crawley. But the more middle and upper class areas of Croydon have the standard "BBC" accent.

    I am Croydon born ('56) & bred...local roots back to the 17th c....& I recorded my mum, gran, great-aunts & brothers chatting about our family history over a family funeral...& the distinct Croydon accent is as clear as the bell in St Andrew's (mum was born 50 yds from that church!). Not quite 'saarf' London...but with a bit of a rustic burr & many quaint verbal choices...& full of lively exclamations we no longer hear.
    At a posh school in Southwark (Guess!), I was lucky enough to get for free (11 plus genius?) from the council budget...I was mocked by prep-school types & masters for sounding so 'common'...like Michael Caine (my dad's family were from the Borough & the Elephant!)...until I remembered my 'h's...& refined my vowels! Then the Croydon friends mocked me back for being 'a bit posh!'.
    I think some of us still speak 'Croydon'. Just listen to the older residents...some still trying to sound less Croydon & more Dulwich village!

      @Enuff947 : Yes indeed! But it was 'free' to clever boys from humble roots with no family car! I was a real 'Red Rover' on the buses! Farage was a decade after me...& I think his 'pater' had a car or two!

    Where is the video of Croydon housing causing people to go into arears by not paying housing benefit residents are entitled to ? THOUSANDS of people are getting letters from their housing association for rent not paid by Croydon council.

    It definitely exists. Is it just me or does a "th" in Croydon sound a bit like a soft "d" sound? Clearly there are a plethora of different accents in a relatively small area, which isn't at all surprising considering such a rich & *long* history.

    I grew up in Croydon and I couldn't ever say I noticed a difference between 'Croydonian' and other South London boroughs as far as an accent was concerned. IMO, the cops are just looking for an excuse to arrest Stormzy.

      That's not true. Even if you listen to BBC radio London, you can hear different regions from the presenters themselves. Robert elms will never lose his west London accent, nor will Vanessa Feltz lose her north London accent. Danny Baker (when he was there)has a south east accent. I can recognise certain London accents. Kentish town have a east London accent merged with North as a significant proportion was moved from Limehouse in the east because the place was being demolished at the time. I can also recognise a Plumstead accent, Chiswick accent and a Whitechapel accent amongst others. It's kept because of locals living in council housing. Local accents are there despite gentrification.

      The so-called "London accent" you mean died down with the youth of the early 90s. Posh Londoners now have the BBC accent.

      Jeff vocal fry tones. I can’t stand it. I very nrly got a job at the bbc as a senior broadcast engineer. I got to 2nd interview. I knew all the technical stuff v well. What let me down was i hadn’t watched telly in years!! I can’t stand the bbc and refuse to pay a licence, so did away with tv around 1995. I don’t mind the old received pronunciation way of talking (Dr Edward Dutton). I just can’t stand this Kardashian-esque posh voice everyone uses.
