yeah, i bought an airbrush and clogged it literary the first time i used. quickly ran back to spray cans lol edit: got it fixed some time ago, turns out if i use the correct paints, it actually works good

If you don't want the hobby grade paints, I find that Rust-Oleum paints work pretty well. You have to put a bit more effort into polishing it, but it coats the model good
Currently on my 4th build and im still having this "sticky" body problem on my models, im never happy about my painting on body parts, so, thank you for this guide that will for sure helps me get better results in the future.
Hey thank you for these videos!I sure wish I had youtube 15-20 years ago when I built Nascar only models. Rollcages and body was the hardest. Regular car models didn't work out to good for me on 67' chevelle and boss 302. Now I'm older and not rush, think I'm gonna try and build a model something with these guide vids.
I’m not sure if you’ve ever watched the hpiguys workshop videos. All you ever see him paint his models with are spray cans. He then uses floor polish for his gloss finish. For him, that’s all he needs and he gets great results. Personally, I use Tamiya spray cans for almost all large surface coverage. I don’t usually use any over coating, I just let the finish stay as it is. For a high gloss finish, I’ve used car paint polishes to get a really nice smooth finish. I haven’t tried the floor polish trick yet on a model but I’ve tried the liquid polish on various surfaces as trials and it’s not too bad. Most times I use dull coat spray finish on my other models aircraft, armour, ships, and sci-fi which works pretty good. I personally find most spray gloss coats don’t really provide “gloss” to surface - more of a semi gloss finish. But then that’s been my experience only. I’ve seen other models where sprays are used (from cans or airbrushes) and the final result is amazing.
Great tutorial once again, seeing this you made me remember of myself long time ago when I was afraid of using an airbrush and only used spray cans! ☺️ Very well explained and I love that MP R32 😍 Keep up the great work 👍👍
I use styrofoam cups to hold my car bodies. Most cups are wider that the inside space and hold them in place without any movement but of late, I’ve purchased Tamiya’s painting gripper stand.
I'm 66 now and been building models off&on much of that time. I have an airbrush, but haven't tried using it yet. I still use Tamiya and Testors spraypaints. I use primer on car models and some aircraft models, especially under gloss paint. I have tried using "commercial" spraypaints like Rustoleum and Krylon, but results haven't been good. One YT modeler uses them, makes it look easy, but I get horrid fisheye and orangepeel, that I don't get using Tamiya/Testors.
Another great video my friend. I’ve never done good work with a rattle can, I’ve used airbrush only for 20 years. You get great results! Thanks for sharing your tips and I look forward to your next video. -James
thank you my friend! sorry i just saw your comments =( i always prefer using spray cans because its easier haha (im lazy) but airbrush is always better, give a finer results =D
Hey thanks for uploading this in the near future Im going to try this out on a Revell 68 GT2 Mustang. Hope it works out! I hope everything I need for this doesnt break the bank 😅
As a tip i would spray a light coat and let it dry a few minutes. Then do it again. I think the more you spray the car or whatever the better it will come out. "And clean the nozzle after each coat." Sometimes the paint builds up on the nozzle and that's where you can get splatter on the car.
You are good my friend, the paint ended up looking awesome. I've tried it once but I ended up messing up the whole paint job. But there comes the saying practice makes perfect.
thanks man! so sorry i just saw your comment =( it's ok just keep practicing =D i too messed up a lot already, even till now i still made mistakes haha
Yes, you make it look very easy. At what point do you paint the interior - roof lining etc? Do you paint the interior first and then mask off before painting the outside or the other way around? What does "paint correction" mean?
@@JHHobby thank you. I guess you would paint the roof lining etc by brush? You have a very accurate and steady hand. Unless you use a Posca pen? Thanks for the video.
Hello! Thank you for the helpful tutorials! I ran into a problem unfortunately. Please bear with me, I'm a beginner and I ran into a problem recently with my build. It's a Lotus Europa 1/24 from Tamiya and the main shell is white. After the first base coat, I had some tiny paint holes and some bumps almost as if the paint bubbled in parts of the car, noticeably near a fender and under the rear bumper, probably because of paint build up. I believe that was orange peel? This is the part where I think I began to get overcomplicated and ahead of myself. I tried sanding down and filling the holes with Tamiya basic putty which is grey. I waited a day for the putty to settle then sanded it so was smooth and in the shape of the shell, holes were filled out. Then, I tried spraying another (2nd) basecoat of the pearl white, and to my dismay, I found out that the pearl white spray (TS-45) I was using was very translucent, and showed the grey putty areas. So, I sanded the car again trying to get rid of as many grey areas as possible. At this stage I have ran out of spray (100ml can), and too eager to finish the shell. It was probably a rookie mistake, but then I tried hand painting the more difficult grey areas with flat-white enamel from Tamiya because I couldn't wait to buy another can of the pearl white. Now I've bought 2nd can 100ml can of pearl white and sprayed the other parts (bumper, back engine cover, spoiler) and then on the main shell yet another basecoat (3rd). There is still some orange peel from my amateur spraying, one or two grey putty areas (3-5mm in size) you can see when it is well lit, as well as some scribing scratches. You can also see slightly raised patches where I've used some enamel in my amateur attempt to cover up the grey putty areas. Now I've used two cans of Tamiya pearl white spray, and still have a pretty mediocre shell. Do I buy third can of the pearl white and spray to cover up the grey regions and fill scribing mistakes? Or should I just clear coat it now, polish, and just build the car.
Hey man..owhh dear😅😅 there is a few mistake u made, 1st the holes u mentioned is normally due to oils/stains on the body so when you spray the paint on it, it will react to the paint and causing it to form a dot/volcano holes. The way to fix this is wait it fully dry and sand the paint until smooth..no need to putty. The 2nd mistake about the pearl white is because pearl white is not meant for base coat, you have to spray a layer of solid white first and then the pearl white.. the pearl white is like a transparent white paint with pearl flakes in it. Hopefully this can help😁 if you have more questions you want to ask, find me on my fb page..because youtube comments had no notification 😅
Thank you for the tips, you're a lifesaver. Yes I'll put a base coat or primer next time. Okay I'll come find you on Facebook. Thanks again for the help!
orange peel happens when you spray too thick or don't let it dry enough between coats. best policy, minimal paint to cover and 2-3 light coats of clear.
You explain so many things SO WELL. Very easy to understand you. Can clear coat be applied in humid weather? I live where it's very humid most of the year and can't spray indoors. Thank you for sharing your techniques to help us.
Glad to hear that!😁😁 for humid weather its abit tough to spray using spray cans..normally spray cans is 1k clear..but on a sunny day it will work..to really solve this issue, you have to use 2k clear..even raining i still can spray clearcoat without having any issues😂
This is amazing, turned out so much better than when I use my airbrush. I might even go back to using spray cans instead. May I know what paint correction or how you polish it? thanks
On the last car, is that the Midnight Purple colour? It looks like it. I need to get that colour for one of my cars. I prefer the last one for clear. Have you thought of doing a risky fourth clear coat on the first car to see if that gives a little more shine? Just a thought. I use Gravity Colors 2K Clear and love it, but switching to Zero Paints as I have a VERY long wait time to get the Gravity Colors product to my door. Great demo and great teaching of rattle can spraying. BRAVO!!!
hi, so sorry i just saw your comment now =(( yes its a midnight purple 3 from R34 GT-R code. normally 3 to 4 layers of clear is enough, too much paint will case the panel line gaps gone haha.. i cant get gravity colours and zero paint here =( they produced some really nice and good paints. and thanks for dropping by =D
We use airbrushing because i cannot afford the little spray cans from hobby lobby, like $10 to $12 bucks for like 3 ounces of paint, and the problem with big cans from Lowes depending on where you live, too much gas comes out with paint and bubbles up your paint job, gotta strip it n start over, I've even decanted them which works better in an airbrush because lack of gas , so i quit spray painting, airbrushing gives me such a shiny coat with very little work 😉
Woow! So nice. I would like to do something like this with some of my diecast cars (1:32/ 1:24) and i have a few questions if it's possible. 1. What's the colour name (how should i look for it) at 12:32? - look's like eggplant. Soooo nice. 2. If the car has its original colour yellow and i want it to spray in electric blue, what do i need to do? (just spray the new color or i have to use something else first? ) 3. Can i use spray paint for plastic on metal/alloy? Thank you
Hey😁 the purple is called midnight purple 3, code LX0 Some paint will be more transparent so its best to spray a grey/white/black base 1st depending on the paint. Yes you can use those paint on your models😁
Great tutorial very good video asks when you spray paint your car that you want to paint and just when you paint it all the car body painted looks like bubbles what do I do is there a solution to solve this?sometimes it happens to you yes or no?
thank you for this video. But I have a question for you, I have to wait 15 mnutes for each coat?I'm sorry if it's already written in the video, but my english is terrible
Hi, i think the weather is not dry and hot enough causing the clearcoat became white-ish..sometimes its unfixable already unless u wetsand it and spray another clear
Any idea what would cause my base coat to get heavy orange peel, after following this exact method? My primer (Mr. Surfacer 1500) was very smooth visually and to the touch. In fact, so smooth that I didn't even sand the primer before spraying the base coat. I did lightly sand the body before primer, though. I airbrushed the base coat, which was Volcano Red by Splash paints. I didn't have this issue using their paint before but I used a different primer, a much thicker Rustoleum self etching primer that I think was actually meant for metal and that turned out perfect.
Nevermind, I figured it out.. turns out it was the weather. Even though it was a clear, sunny day.. I painted the first half earlier in the day, which turned out fine.. it was after 5PM that I finished it, when the sun was starting to set and I guess that increased the humidity in the air, which caused the base coat to wrinkle. It also caused the clear coat to get a milky haze. I need to get an indoor booth, lol. If it's not dust or bugs landing on it, it's the weather..
Hi, u can check out my other videos on how to polish and do paint correction 😁 and no you dont need to polish base paint/colour.. colour do it on clearcoat
For the midnight purple, what primer colour did you use if any, I`m gonna use a blue pearlescent on a car and keep wondering if the colour of the primer will affect the final colour.
hi sorry for the late reply. some metallic paints u can use grey primer no problem..but some paints will be more transparent like red/yellow/white and it will need a different basecoat so that the paint coat will be even and easily covered.
what kind of spray can i use? acrylics or lacquer, also for the body painting, which bits did you use the acrylic paint on and which bits did you use the lacquer on? and regarding clear colors for the lights, is there a way to make them?
Thanks! I used Mr hobby super clear. Tamiya clear works fine too.. and when painting over decals, dont spray wet coat on the 1st layer and you will be fine😁
Hey just found your channel, seems great with lots of good info. I didn't see a video on airbrushing, wondering if I missed it? Any recommendations on an airbrush set up for someone to start with? Thanks!
So My model I currently am working on is really bad paint job I want to remove everything I’ve already tried rubbing alcohol and didn’t work. Anything else I could do? Please help!!
Hey, normally i use hobby thinner, dip the whole body into the thinner and thr paints will wash off easily and not hurting the plastic body..but hobby thinner cost alot😅
Love your work mate everything is built and painted to perfection ! Had a question for you, I painted a model today, 3 coats primer 3 coats colour, the colour has very noticeable orange peel effect, would you recommend another wet sanding process before clear coat and if so what grit paper? Cheers
Love the shine. How many coats did you do with the mr super clear and how long do you wait in between? also are you doing a light coat and then finishing with a wet coat?
Thanks! I the body is exposed with metal its better to spray primer on to prevent rust and better protection..if the body is still cover in colour paint then there is no need for primer😄
Hi, yes for me if the body is perfectly fine and smooth you dont rrally need primer..unless you do alot body work or putty then you need primer to cover up the rough sanding marks
Do you prefer primer for better looking work or does it matter? I'll be painting it a dark color gray and black, I have a Aoshima kit came plain white.
It depends, for certain colours like yellow, red, white u need a grey primer for better coverage..colours like pearl you need a black base for the pearls to pop😁
Hey I have a question can I use the spray cans on a plastic car mold because I have been wondering and if yeah is there a different procedure or just the same one.
Hey mate do you ever use wax and grease remover after applying paint to clean before clear coat or? Ok to use a paint brush on base coats to brush any dust off too after it’s dried for a while or?
Hi sorry for my english I don't understand much English, primary and compulsory? I would like to try to paint my model with a tamiya spray can, it will be a first and I am afraid that the paint will leak.... thank you
How much time between paint and clear coat did you wait? Orange peal can be caused by not letting the spray paint harden enough first, I see some say wait 7 days befor clear coating. My model has been waiting 3 days so far
Thanks for the great tutorial! But the mr. hobby's clear coat that I used melted my paint... the paint dried for about a week before I clear coated it, do you know what could cause the problem?
Ohhh, i never had that problem so far..maybe your 1st layer is too wet? Or maybe the colour paint u used is not suitable for mr.hobby clear..im not too sure tho😅
Maybe you should do two mist coats to ensure you have good coverage. Your first wet coat maybe too wet as well. Don't aim for perfectly smooth finish with the first wet coat. You'll get that in the second wet coat
Hello there! I'm not sure if you would still be reading the comments, but I wanna ask for some advice. I've been wanting to customise one of my 1:400 models but it’s actually made out of metal and already painted by the manufacturer. As mine is a rare model, I’m afraid painting it badly would damage the model. So basically it’s already coated with paint from the manufacturer, and I want to spray it silver. However I’m just afraid it would not work out well because the paint is mainly for plastic kits and might be too thick? Thanks!
Hey man, there is always risk repainting a model, if you have the experience and guts to do so, just go for it!😁 most of the paints out there are suitable for metal and plastic so its not an issue 😄
Thank you for this it seems like everyone else uses an airbrush
haha yeah..most builders now using airbrush..so i wanted to make one simple/ everyone can spray tutorial =D
yeah, i bought an airbrush and clogged it literary the first time i used. quickly ran back to spray cans lol

@@JHHobby TQ for Yr reply, it was a 3rd coat of paint when the whitish appeared. So the only solution is to respray another coat?
Excellent !
You may not see this after this long but if you were going paint chrome details on the body, would you do that before the clear coat?
Hi, for chrome normally we do after clearcoat because most chrome will fade after applied clearcoat on top😁
@@JHHobby Thank you!
If it's not dust or bugs landing on it, it's the weather..
can you tell us how to do a paint correction? And is it recomended to do a rubbing compound on a color paint before applying a clear layers?
Hi, u can check out my other videos on how to polish and do paint correction 😁 and no you dont need to polish base paint/colour.. colour do it on clearcoat
@@JHHobby thank you so much ! 🙏🏾
For the midnight purple, what primer colour did you use if any, I`m gonna use a blue pearlescent on a car and keep wondering if the colour of the primer will affect the final colour.
Nvm, did a test spray, grey primer goes on lighter than red primer
Normally i will do/and recommend black base for midnight purple..even the paint codes really a black base for it😁
do you recommend me putting a grey primer for a gray metallic base coat? or you think i’d be fine with just going in with the base color no primer ??
hi sorry for the late reply. some metallic paints u can use grey primer no problem..but some paints will be more transparent like red/yellow/white and it will need a different basecoat so that the paint coat will be even and easily covered.
Is there like a special type of spray paint for painting model cars? Or would like any type work?
Use mostly acrylic paints😁
@@JHHobby Thank you!😁
hello like thick paint what does that mean? I did not understand the question and the reaction of painting that would be?
what kind of spray can i use? acrylics or lacquer, also for the body painting, which bits did you use the acrylic paint on and which bits did you use the lacquer on? and regarding clear colors for the lights, is there a way to make them?
I mostly use acrylic paints😁
thank you, this is great. What clear coat do you use, and does it react with the decals?
Thanks! I used Mr hobby super clear. Tamiya clear works fine too.. and when painting over decals, dont spray wet coat on the 1st layer and you will be fine😁
nice tips paint bro
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video! Is there any prep needed for painting the other random pieces?
Thanks! Normally i only prep the big parts haha..small parts i only dust it off with brush
Hey just found your channel, seems great with lots of good info. I didn't see a video on airbrushing, wondering if I missed it? Any recommendations on an airbrush set up for someone to start with? Thanks!
Thanks mate! Yea i did not make video about airbrush yet😂 my airbrush is not really good, so i dont dare too do a tutorial yet
3 to 4 coats. Normally around 10 to 15 mins between coat. Yes you need to spray 1 mist coat thn follow with 2 to 3 wet coat
So are you putting a clear coat in between the primer and the main coat?
How do you achieve paint correction? Is that in a different video? Thanks.
Yes there is another video for it, try searching it on my youtube channel🤗
very informative video mate👌......btw can I spray paint directly to the diecast metal car without spraying primer??
Thanks! I the body is exposed with metal its better to spray primer on to prevent rust and better protection..if the body is still cover in colour paint then there is no need for primer😄
@@JHHobby thank you so much 😊
Hi! Good video. Primer is not necessary? Thanks
Hi, yes for me if the body is perfectly fine and smooth you dont rrally need primer..unless you do alot body work or putty then you need primer to cover up the rough sanding marks
@@JHHobby thanks 😉
Do you prefer primer for better looking work or does it matter? I'll be painting it a dark color gray and black,
I have a Aoshima kit came plain white.
It depends, for certain colours like yellow, red, white u need a grey primer for better coverage..colours like pearl you need a black base for the pearls to pop😁
Thanks good info!!
Hey I have a question can I use the spray cans on a plastic car mold because I have been wondering and if yeah is there a different procedure or just the same one.
Hi, yes you can use spray cans no problem, i had use many times previously😁
Hey mate do you ever use wax and grease remover after applying paint to clean before clear coat or? Ok to use a paint brush on base coats to brush any dust off too after it’s dried for a while or?
Yes i do clean thm everytime before paint😁
I see you used Samurai clearcoat! Have you tried the 2K
Awesome video🙏🏼 I have a question: Can I use cheap clear coat over tamiya spray paint? Is it okay? I’m not sure so I thought you might know
Yes you can😁 i use normal clear coat from hardware stores in the past..works fine too..but its not as good as hobby cans spray
@@JHHobby ok thank you so much. I can’t buy any better clear coat rn so I need to use hobby clear coat.
Hi sorry for my english
I don't understand much English, primary and compulsory?
I would like to try to paint my model with a tamiya spray can, it will be a first and I am afraid that the paint will leak.... thank you
Hi what is colour correction please and how did you polish the paint. Thanks.
How much time between paint and clear coat did you wait? Orange peal can be caused by not letting the spray paint harden enough first, I see some say wait 7 days befor clear coating. My model has been waiting 3 days so far
Normally around 1 day is enough already..dont wait too long because some clearcoat will not stick to the paint if left for too long
Thanks for the great tutorial! But the mr. hobby's clear coat that I used melted my paint... the paint dried for about a week before I clear coated it, do you know what could cause the problem?
Ohhh, i never had that problem so far..maybe your 1st layer is too wet? Or maybe the colour paint u used is not suitable for mr.hobby clear..im not too sure tho😅
@@JHHobby I see, I might try tamiya clear next time since I'm using tamiya spray paint, thanks
@@JHHobby okay! Last few question, does masking paper from the model stores really work?
For the brake lights and indicator light. If i dont want to use tamiya clear red and orange, what other ways i can use? Preferably cheaper ways
Hmm..normal orange and red is ok too
