    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  2 роки тому +3

      Most important thing is to make fast moves so it doesn't apply too thick. Sometimes you will need to spray many times over the same spot because fast moves apply thin layer of paint , but you can stop when you are satisfied with result. If you hold spraycan too long over same spot, you will cover that spot very fast but paint will start dripping and it will fill all details on your model so it will look very ugly.

      I still don't have much experience with decals, but I think it's better to apply them after clear coat, because if you apply decal before, clear coat will not stick to paint on that place where decal is, and might fall off after some time.

    What is the best paint brand to use when customizing hot wheels?

    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  2 роки тому +2

      It's hard to say. Most of today's acrylic spray paints are good quality and you can use most of paints you can find locally. Good primer is key to painting. If your primer sticks good to surface then paint will easy stick to primer. I found two good primers in stores near me. Polish "Novol" and Italian "Dupli Color". I also use Dupli Color paints. Italian "Saratoga" paints are good too, and Serbian "Beorol". That's what I could find in stores near me and those all are general purpose paints. There are specialised paints for use in modelling, in spray cans, for airbrush or regular hand brush. Tamiya and Vallejo are two very popular brands, but they can be several times more expensive.

    When your doing each coat how many strokes or sprays should you do in each one?

    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  2 роки тому +1

      That depends on how fast you are moving spray can and how much paint is coming out of can every time you press the cap. Some caps releases less and some releases more paint. I would say its about 20 strokes. You will see, when you start to lose details its time to stop.

    • @WhattoRepair

      Yes, you can paint without primer but paint will not last so long. Maybe it will start to peel after some time, depending on paint quality. But you can always repeat same process again if you notice any problems. You can always remove that paintwork when you have primer and paint again starting with primer.

    What brand of clear coat do you use exactly? Also are acrylic sprays better overall than enamels? I suck at this, I feel like I did a good job painting but then the I see a chip or scratch. Either the paint I’m using is too cheap or the clear is worthless 😬.

    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  Рік тому

      I'm using Dupli Color Special clear coat, made for using on cars. I never had problems with paint chipping. I was also using some cheaper clear coat and they were also decent. I'm always using acrylic products, enamel maybe sticks better than acrylic but both color types sticks enough good so you shouldn't have problems if you do good clear coating. I think paint is not the problem, maybe clear coat is very bad, or check expiration date on your spray. Maybe you are working in too cold or humid environment, or you need more clear coat. If you want really strong protection try 2 component clear coats. You have clear coat base and activator and when you mix that two components it starts to harden. You will need airbrush for spraying 2K coats but they are very strong and scratch resistant.

You can also use simple acrylic paint in small tubes for school use. I always try to use markers for detailing, because it's simple use, but when detail is really small or when I don't have marker in particular color, I must use acrylic paint with very precise brush or with tip of a toothpick.

    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  3 роки тому +4

      This video is only about using paint in form of spray so I didn't show other methods. You are right, you always need primer, no matter what paint you will use. Without primer paint will not stick for base. Then you use main paint. I'm using acrylic paint in spray can, as I wrote in subtitles in video. Most of spray paints are acrylic paints. Clear coat is for finish to protect your paintwork from scratching. Clear coat can be glossy or matte, find appropriate depending what effect you want to have. If you need to paint details, best way is to buy acrylic paint in small tubes and paint with small paintbrush, or even with sharp wooden toothpick if details are really small. You can find it literally everyhwere and you can mix them to get color you want. They are water based and will not damage main paint. If you paint details, paint it over your main paint and then spray clear coat last, to protect everything. Second way to paint details is with paint markers, but I don't recommend them for beginners, because they contain solvents that can dissolve your main paint and ruin everything. You can see in my other videos how I paint details with acrylic paints and with paint markers.

    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  Рік тому +1

      I was always using acrylic car lacquer. There are many manufacturers. Almost everyone who makes some car paints makes acrylic lacquer. What you will buy It really depends what is available to you in your country. First I was using some cheap local generic brands and they were ok. After that I was using italian Dupli Color lacquer. Dupli Color is name of brand. It was also good, maybe it was drying faster. Most of lacquers in spray cans are more or less good, but they are not high quality protection. If you are using that object every day, lacquer will start to damage. If you protect something that will be static most of time, like part of some collection, spray cans are very good then.
      Now I have airbrush and I'm using 2 component (2K) acrylic lacquer. Mipa brand. You can see it in my latest videos. It is made for professional use and its high level of protection. 2K lacquers are little more complicated to use but they are more resistant to scratches.

    If I were to use a transparent colored paint, like Dupli Color Metalcast, trying to get a spectraflame look, would these steps remain the same?

    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  2 роки тому +1

      I didn't used Metalcast colors but I read on internet about using them to get spectraflame look. Steps will not be the same. Most important thing is to strip all old paint from your casting and to polish metal until it's very shiny. You don't use primer. You spray Metalcast color directly on polished car to get spectraflame look and after that you can use clear coat on top. Clear coat should not change spectraflame look, but you must use glossy coat, not matte. Those are steps and car will look nice, but I'm not sure for how long without primer. Maybe metalcast color sticks good to surface, even without primer.

    Hello sir. I have a question
    After paint removing.. is okay to use sandpaper and what grits 1200 or 1500 grit??
    After Primer and base coat... do i need to sanding that model car ??

    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  2 роки тому +1

      Hi. After paint removing you can use sandpaper to remove oxidation from surface so primer can stick better to surface. Also use sandpaper if you have some damaged areas on casting, scratches or casting lines. Grit 1200 is too fine for that kind of work. Use something around 300-500. Sometimes I use even files to remove some scratches. If you don't have some damages on car, it's enough to use only small steel brush. I use small rotary brush. When you start painting there is no need for sanding anymore. Sanding can easily damage your paint.
      Some people are sanding and polishing final clear coat layer to get ultra glossy finish but that can be very risky job, if you damage your paint you need to repeat all from the beginning.

      I wait at least one hour with Bartoline TX10 stripper, but when I removing paint from old Matchbox and Hot Wheels from '80, after one hour there is very little or none progress, so I need to damage paint first with brush or sandpaper and repeat process with stripper. Sometimes I need to repeat 2-3 times to remove paint completely, so it needs almost entire day to remove paint. I guess paint was more durable those days. That yours premium hotwheel maybe also has more durable paint so try to wait longer. While you waiting, put your car in some plastic box or bag so stripper doesn't evaporate.

    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  2 роки тому +1

      If you don't use primer you can damage paint when touching painted object. Paint will fall off even without touching after some time. Paint can also drip when painting if you didn't use primer. Primer helps paint to stick on object. You can sand, file, brush or do whatever you want after taking off the paint, but all that must be done before spraying with primer.

    HI. Questions. primer and base are acrylic, correct? is is same with clear coat? if i place few coats of primer, can i sand it with wet sandpaper? do the same for base coat, more layers and then sending. after that even more clear coats?
    Also, regarding temperature, should car and spray cans be warm? can should be very good shaken, correct? if there is to much paint dust in air, should car be removed from dust so not to affected already placed paint that is fine for us?
    THX for answers :)

    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  2 роки тому

      Hm, I must clear few things. Primer is same thing as base for paint and it's not acrylic. It's purpose is to make good surface for paint, so paint can better stick. Without primer paint would fall off soon. Primer is usually gray or black or white, it has no some special color. After primer you spray paint. Paints are usually acrylic. Clear coat is not acrylic, it is lacquer and it's used for paint protection. Without clear coat you can scratch your paint with finger nail. So, only paint can be acrylic.
      There is no need for sanding primer. Why would you do that? It forms microscopic structure on your object (in this case car) so paint can stick to primer better than to naked object. You also can't sand paint if it's not protected with clear coat because you will scratch it easily. You can only sand last clear coat layer if you want to get better gloss. But I don't do this on small cars like this. People sand clear coat on bigger surfaces (on bigger cars) to get higher gloss.
      Can should be very good shaken and you can hold them in warm water half hour before painting but it's not necessary, it should be enough to keep can at room temperature one hour before painting. Generally, higher temperature makes higher pressure in a can so paint better gets out of can. When you finish your painting put your car somewhere at room temperature so paint can dry, don't put car on cold place. And air should be clean, without any dust. If you have small drops of paint in the air this is dangerous to breathe without mask. You should paint outside and bring car inside to dry, or you should use painting booth. Painting booth is small box with fan and air filter. It collects all excess paint. Always wear a mask when painting, the best mask you can afford.

    Can this method be use to spray paint grey gun metal aluminium 1:18 wheels . I want them gold not grey

    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  Рік тому

      Are you asking about removing gray paint from aluminum wheels? Paint strippers can remove almost any paint from any surface. But if your wheels are spray painted, you probably won't need a paint stripper, a regular nitro based paint thinner will also remove the spray paint from the wheels and it's cheaper. Paint strippers are more expensive than thinners, but they can be used for strong colors. I would try with nitro thinner, and if it's not working then you can try with paint stripper. Thinner is dissolving paints and stripper forces paint to peel of the surface. After removing paint you can paint your wheels whatever you like.

You need very little of it to remove paint from one 1/64 car, like small tea spoon is enough, so it lasts very long time. It is made in UK, but you can find it worldwide, online or in local stores.

      You can but result will be really bad. If car (or something else) is brand new then result will be ok, because paint is even layer and not damaged. But if your object have damaged paint you will have holes in that places after spray painting. Spray painting makes very thin layer of paint so every detail in shape or anomaly underneath will be visible.

Try and see does remainings of paint come off or not. You can't damage the car with small brush. Don't use large and strong brushes for big surfaces because they can leave marks on car.

    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  2 роки тому

      There could be several reasons why primer doesn't dry. First, is your layer maybe too thick? You should spray very thin layer so it dries fast. Maybe your primer has longer drying time, instructions on spray can give you some informations. Environment can also have an effect on drying time. Cold and humid air can really slow down drying. I don't know where you live, but if it's winter in your country or you have humid climate and you are painting outside, primer and paint can dry for hours. Primer should dry at room temperature where air is not humid. You can spray outside and bring your car immediately inside in warm and dry place to dry. Did your primer dried at the end?

      You should remove the original paint, because new paint might unevenly cover old paint or fall off later. Also, painting over original paint in most cases will make thick layer of paint that would fill all details, like door lines, lights, front grill and all other details so your model can look very bad. But, you can always try paint over original paint and if you are not satisfied with results you can strip off all paint and start painting again on clean surface. In diecast customizing you can't make mistake that can't be repaired again. You can always repeat the process.

    • @WhattoRepair
      @WhattoRepair  2 роки тому

      You need to understand what is purpose of each layer. Primer and that glossy spray are not paints. Only acrylic is paint. Primer is paint base and it's used so paint can stick to something. Without primer everything will eventually fall of the car or it will be very easy to damage. Final layer is transparent lacquer and its purpose is protection. Without protection you can scratch paint off even with your finger nail. Lacquer can be glossy or matte. There are paints that contains protection lacquer inside, like 2 in 1 paints, but they are usually much thicker and it will cover almost all details on your car. So, if you will never touch you car after painting, maybe protection layer is not necessary. But if you plan to touch or even play with your car, you must protect your paint.

      Any paint remover should always be treated as toxic. Always work in a well-ventilated room or outside. Many of the newer paint removers, like the Bartoline TX10 I use, are water-based and not very harmful because they don't contain methylene chloride. The instructions say that inhaling large concentrations can cause headaches and nausea, but for this type of use, a large amount of remover is not used, and I hardly smell it while working. I use half liter bottle of paint remover for two years, so you can get the idea what amounts of remover I use. Search for methylene chloride free remover, work in a ventilated room and be sure to avoid contact with the skin and there should be no problems.

      No, there is no big difference. First, you must use primer. Then apply first paint and wait at least 12 hours for paint to dry if you use masking tapes. If you apply masking on paint which is not completely dry, tape will not glue correctly and when you remove tape you will remove paint with tapes. So wait first paint to dry, apply masking then spray second color and wait to dry, then remove masking tapes and spray clear coat in same way I was spraying in video. If you dont want sharp transition between paints so there is no need for masking tapes, for example if you want soft transition between colors, then you can wait only 30 minutes after every color.
