Do you need to put a battery in it to plug it in to an amp?
No. The Mustang Micro has a rechargeable battery within, and then you just plug the audio cable into a powered speaker or amp.
If you do not have the Mustang Micro, you can use a guitar cable (not sure of the name of the thicker cable) and plug it into an amp. The on-board pre-amp does have a tiny battery inside.
