When he first got it i wasnt very impressed. Then after seeing the roller lift and attachments to get the wheels up and drop the tank i have changed my mind. Cool for sure
He's definitely living the dream. Especially compared to rolling around the floor in his old shop.

Mustie, another great video full of tips and tricks. What really impressed me was the metal working machines in your workshop that we don't usually see in action. Keep up the great work!
My first job in 1976 was at an auto radiator shop. We used to boil gas tanks out in a propane heated big tank with caustic soda. Then wash it inside and out.Then the old guy would pressurize it and put it in a big water tank to find the leak,Solder it up ,throw a coat of paint on them and they were like new. I think they charged like 40 bucks. I bet those kinda places do not even exist anymore.

Mustie, have you tried a Valvoline product called Tectyl? There are two kinds, one thin floating for inside of frames, in doors and a thick one to coat the outside. It's not very expensive and it's a good product. We use it here in southern Norway to prevent rust damage to our cars. Our climat is a lot like yours and our roads gets tons of salt during winter season. Thank you for letting us share wrenching with you. Stay safe and healthy!
Hey Mustie. This brought back lots of memories. Here in Atlantic Canada all of this body style of GMs had rotten frames. We had templates made so we were quicker doing the job. Later we would import the whole rear section of frame from the Carolinas. Gas tanks too. Anyway, hello from Cape Breton. Love the channel. Have a good one.

good job with the frame patch! i had an 84 regal back in the mid-nineties. paid $400 for it. found the frame was broken at the bend where comes down fro over the axle. i had a guy patch it for me but, your repair looks much better then mine did. my guy pretty much threw some flat steel at it and welded them together. it got the job done but, wasn't very pretty!
The oil fill pipe says it's an Olds. The 305 is filled through the valve cover.
I will be flat out honest right now not most people who weld on frame patches don't care about what it looks like they just weld on square patches and looks like hell but this guy needs an AWARD !!!! for this patch job on this G-Body chassis, this is just simply amazing and well done it's exactly what I would do if I could weld I just can't stand sloppy noncaring square patches, NICE JOB MAN!!!!
I was driving my 79 GMC caballero/El Camino I started hearing a scraping sound I pulled over found the rear bumper and almost 3 feet of frame dragging on the ground if the tail lights had not been in the bumper I would not have known it fell off. I unplugged the light tossed the mess in the bed and went on home. Yet another great Mustie1 video.

Fixed about a dozen of these in a row starting with mother in laws ‘86 Monte Carlo. Found a guy locally who made complete new rails . Also he made pieces for the trunk in case a body mount bolt broke. Quick and easy , pull bolts , remove frame rail just behind shock plate .
We used to have customers come in and say I can't get an inspection sticker because my bumper is loose, and of coarse it was the frame . One professional welder in town specialized in frame repair and we would send it to him, he did very well for himself in that business, and his work was great.
I had one of these , it was my first car.Loved it.A chesterfield on wheels and as a teenager the backseat was ideal for extracurricular activities.

Worked at a Dealership in the late 80s.Remember taking plastic off the seats.Them cars were mostly lacquer in late 80s. It is I really good shape. Watching from Ontario.

Mustie, that Cutlass looks great now !! I owned a 67, 73, 74, 77 & a 86 cierra, All great oldsmobiles. Hope you enjoy yours . Once you get that olds blood in you, you're hooked for good !
I had a 67 ,73,75,and an 84 that was my sister's deisel which I bought after she blew up the deisel and had it converted to a gas 350 rocket out of an older early 70s cutlass as well as the turbo 350 trans instead of 200 4r that was in it it had factory dual exhaust and factory 342:1. Posi rear so you know that was a fun car to drive after the swap
@@glennmanchester1568 that is eerily similar to my 80 Regal t top. I swapped in a warmed over Buick 350, had the 2004R built, and swapped in a grand National rear end with 3.42s and posi. Very torquey fun cruiser.

I had the rare 1988 rear wheel drive Cutlass. Tank leaked and would lose prime in the carb. Got tired of starting it with ether and ordered a tank. Of course they sent me the front wheel drive version tank. Got the right tank and layed in the rocks on my back and changed her myself. That fixed everything.
That's is definitely a 307 olds v8. Had one in my 86 buick regal years ago. They are a smog era boat anchor but reliable when taken good care of.

Wish they still made these.Bought an 84 Regal at auction back in 94 and it was the best $1200 I ever spent.Light on the power with the 3.8 V6 in it but it was a tank.Put a timing chain in it and drove it until 250000 miles when the rust monster finished it.

I slways look forward to your videos on a sunday with a cup of coffee.... and yes you inspired me to rebuild a 5500 watt honda engine kodiak generator... spent 200 bucks on parts and a battery... and with a turn of a key it starts.. mind you the tank was rotten so I replaced it with removable marine tank and pump bulb but works great... Thank you :)

If memory serves... 260 n 307 olds engines was used for v8 option. All 260s had duel jet carbs. Thanks for sharing Mustie. 👊👍

My 1st car was an 85 regal, that rats nest of wires and vacuum hoses, brought back bad memories. I hated working on it, and I had too a lot.

I have been using waste oil for years and I'm going to try the bar oil now. You got me convinced. CT winters were harsh on all my vehicles and now I'm in Cleveland and it's the same as CT. Cold and Salty and wet...They salt the roads down here so much, they stay white all winter long from the salt...
It's actually refreshing to hear someone say "shows how much I know about GM products - nothing"... the UA-cam market is a bit oversaturated with GM experts and LS swaps. Great content, as always.
Yeah, for some reason they feel that they have to LS swap everything........personally, I think it’s been done to death....
As a GM guy, I agree with the LS swap everything is long in the tooth. I get asked often if I plan to LS swap my 80 Regal t top. Nope. It's Buick 350 powered, has overdrive, a great running cruiser. I may throw an efi kit on it, but that's it.
if my gen 0 is non rebuildable. I am definitely going to an LS. there is a reason people are doing LS swaps. and that you or others are tied of them. that isn't going to stop me from going to one. it would be far cheaper to go to a junk yard LS than doing a roller conversion, better heads to the flow capability of the poorest LS heads. . be far far cheaper going LS than updating my gen 0. that is part of the alure of going to a cost effective engine. for example, heads + retrofit roller package would be north of 4000 Cdn dollars here. Fuel injection hardwaye, another probably another 1000 dollars. that goes a long way towards going to a much better platform.
I had a 86 olds cutlass Supreme back in the day! I loved that car. It drove really nice ,it was a really nice ride! It had the 5.0 liter v8. It honestly didn't have a lot of power but it was smooth and definitely got out of its own way. Cars today just don't have the same ride as they did back then. Cars today I suppose are technically better built but these cars just felt better when you sat in them. Its hard to explain. But yeah I miss it!

My old, olds cutlass supreme had its fuel pump fail in the parking lot of a Walmart, lucky. However, we had to drop the gas tank right there it was a learning experience. Thank you Sir!.

Brian did an awesome job buffing and polishing.there is only so much that a polisher can do on old neglected paint.
He definitely did as much that can be possibly done with it.of course they always look much better outdoors in the daylight vs artificial indoor lighting.it looks great.
As for that hesitation when you first stab the gas pedal that you spoke of,I would be suspicious of it needing a new accelerator pump inside the carburetor.
When those Rochester carburetors sit for a while the accelerator pump stiffens up causing it to dump fuel when you first hit it.

'Landau Cutlassian' - I can't believe that just dawned on me!
As soon as you said tank leak I said leaking at the seam. GMs of this era were famous for it. Check the backing plates on the rear breaks. They rotted and allowed the wheel brake cylinders to become loose and detach.. No brakes.
Fixed a lot of these cars in my time👍

When you said the gas tank leaks, it reminded me.. My olds had a leaking tank too, i used JB weld on it. Then you pulled the tank and it had a "patch" on it.

That dent has changed the overall volume of the tank itself and could lead to more problems in the future. Glad to here you ordered a new one.
What difference does changing the volume make? On a radio, I get it; why does it matter on a fuel tank?🤔
In the late 90's my brother and I had a handful of regal's, cutlasses and a couple F bodies too but the G bodies were my go to vehicles back then! Cheap and reliable!
Oldsmobile valve covers do fill up with oil. The oil returns to the crank case through the pushrod holes.
What ?? That's how the oil gets there the. Returns are on either end of the head and undersized and when oil changes aremt done on the reg the sludge builds up and clogs em I used to clean them out with a coat hanger ream them out and the customer would be back in bizz they would come in thinking the engine was blown oil leaking all over and the motor smoking as the oil is getting past the seals and down the valve guides cuz the valve covers were full of oil
In 1978 when the g bodies were downsized with this frame they had a plastic plug that fit into the body mount hole and it greatly helped to stop the corrosion. Subsequent years did not have this simple part which leaves us with a huge hole to intake road salt & moisture leaving most with this problem.

Lots of torque, and great fuel mileage. I'll take a 307 Olds over a 305 Chevy any day.
I worked for an OEM frame supplier. I have seen Mig Welding wire on new vehicles from the factory. If the mig welding robot goes off location and tries to weld on metal that's not there, the machine operator will usually just reset the robot and continue the weld from the stopping point. This is most likely caused by variations in the metal stampings from worn dies. Still a good weld, just a little ugly. LOL. Like you said, someone filled up a big hole on that one though. I wish id had you around to make my metal patches when i used to weld, luckily the cars i own now are much better protected.
You know it’s an Olds from the dedicated oil fill at the front of the engine. Chevy has the oil fill in the valve cover. I’ve had Olds 403, 350, and 307 cars and all were like that.
I built a 403 and they are expensive to build. Great running engine when built. Huge bore 4.351"x 3.38" stroke.
With such a nasty leak, lots of extra quarts have been dropped into it. Probably one every week or so.

@@bigdumbdad2226 Distributor is in the rear on this engine..... the part where you can see the distributor is from the firewall side....
And the rocker arm fulcrum pivots that liked to break at high RPM.
Classic 76-ish GM. Worked on one of these in the mid to late 80's, a 76 Cutlass that had virtually no frame left behind the upper shock mounts. Would have crumbled like an aluminum beer can and I was surprised that the rear bumper was still in place.
Michigan rust is worse because the ave winter temps are right in the sweet spot for road salt corrosion.
That frames in great condition for how old the car is, tbh the whole cars in really nice for it's age
I am going to spray the underside my 2003 Suzuki XL-7 V6 ( we have similar issues with road salt in the Uk) and have bought the chainsaw oil so was great to have a recap ! I know you’ve covered this before but you’ve saved me trouble of looking for it. I was thinking of warming the gallon can in a warm water bath to reduce the viscosity that way.
Thought you knew already, but the oil fill tube in the front means its an OLDS. Same with the valve cover design and even the grouped rocker retainers. But super easy ID is the oil tube up front.
That's a very nice Cutlass! I wish Olds would of had their own version of the turbo charged 3.8L. I still love the look of this one either way.
Common problem with a 307 Olds engine (if semi high mileage) will be the rockers and saddles will be worn out on the center of each head where the exhaust runs up to the intake manifold on both sides- you'll want to replace at least the 2 center ones on each side, and possibly some rockers if they are scored up very badly........
A 307 is a283 with a 327 crankshaft a good improvement but GM had a lot of parts to use up so this worked well.
Tim O'Sullivan that would be a chevy 307. This is an olds, which is a completely different engine.
@@elcaminosunlimited No, a chevy 307 doesnt have the pot-metal saddles that do two rockers each like the Olds did, they also didnt have a problem with the center ones going bad due to oil starvation in high milage engines like the olds ones- youre talking out your ass I was a factory GM trained Mr. Goodwrench Mechanic for 20 years, and worked on many hundreds of those engines- Nice try
Mad-Duk Machine Works no...im saying the guy who said a 307 is a 283 with a 327 crank is referring to a 307 chevy. And this cutlass has a 307 olds.
@@elcaminosunlimited Gotcha, GM did some great stuff (being sarcastic) Like for instance, in the 1970's there was a Buick 350, a Pontiac 350, an Olds 350 and a Chevy 350, each was a unique design with little or no parts that could swap over the Buick and Pontiac were phased out and the Chev and Olds went on into the 1980's and beyond-
Look at the positive side ! That oil leak be a good job of keeping the front half from rusting !
