I am torajan myself and i can say that you explored my home village more than i did. I am glad that you got a nice tour local guide and also grateful that you shared our culture so people can get to know it more. If i may add an information, the reason why we slaughter buffalo at the burial ceremony is because the soul of the deceased will have to ride the soul of the buffalo to go to puya (after life), and thats also the reason why the baby is burried in the tree, as the soul of the baby is so small that it couldn't ride the buffalo yet. Burrying the baby in the tree will make the soul grow bigger also as the tree itself is growing too, and once the soul of the baby become big enough, it will reach its time and ready to ride the soul of the buffalo to the puya. The hole of the baby grave in the tree may not face the direction of his/her home. It should face the opposite direction as they supposed not to return home to be with family, instead go to the puya. Maybe you already knew this information, but i hope those who didn't would now do.
Thank you Natalie and Carles for visiting Toraja, especially the graves of my extended family in Suaya Sangalla. Always a pleasure to watch your journey together. Hope you are always healthy and happy.
Wow this is an unique experience, not every foreigner can experienced it & put it in a vlog like this, even though i've seen it before but never as details as this video. thank you Nat & Carles for sharing this video 😃
Thanks for the video today, I learned more about Torajan culture from this 😊, as far as I know the funeral ceremony of Torajan are the most expensive in Indonesia even in the world & also the graves is very unique
As an Indonesian I would say terimakasih banyak / thank you so much for you both for sharing about cultures that I didn't know. I'm always counting more and more for your next videos and learn new things. Have a safe and meaningful travels, dearest Natalie & Carles😊✨
What I really admire about the customs in Tana Toraja are the unique traditions that cannot be found anywhere else. This is the most unique tradition in the world. Including burying people who have died, but we don't find them at other places in this world.
It's so many education and information in this vidio event im Indonesia dont know and dont have experiance to see that, so tank you for the vidio and exploring indonesia🙏, keep healty and enjoy your time guys in ondonesia😊
And don't forget if you stop by in Papua, please stop in West Papua to be precise in the Raja Ampat islands. Hi guys, you said that you’d leave your guide’s info in the video description but I couldn’t find it. If I ever go back to Tana Toraja again I’d want to support Natalia because we don’t really see that many female guides around. Did you feel weird about visiting a dead person like that? I don’t know if I’d be able to do it. Not because I’m afraid, but because it feels like a taboo somehow. I did go to a funeral back when I was there, and even then I felt guilty because it felt like I was crashing in some stranger’s funeral. Although I’m sure the Torajans themselves don’t mind these things, it’s just me being me as someone from a different culture (still the same country, though).
Both of our guides info is at the top of the description and in a pinned comment! The best way to contact Natalia is on Instagram @toraja_local_guide or on whatsapp at +6282292366937 Mmmm honestly for me it felt more taboo to go to the funeral than it did to visit one of the dead people! Especially when we were able to talk to her son, they seemed really happy that we came to visit so it felt a lot more welcoming 😊
@@NataliesPassport Oh, thank you for the contact. Don’t know how I missed that! 🙏 Interesting that for you going to the funeral felt more taboo. I think it’s a matter of our respective cultural background. Thank you for sharing!

They in the past also sacrificed humans, usually slaves because they were to accompany their masters in the next world. If you look at it today, white buffaloes with blue eyes have a fantastic price, imagine if you came to Toraja in ancient times, you were white and had blue-eyed, you could be an expensive human being . Just kidding 😂
