- Toraja Video with a Guide: • Visiting a Dead Person...
Our homestay: www.homestay-t...
In this Indonesia Travel Vlog, we finally make it to Toraja (both Tana Toraja and Toraja Utara). We had been looking forward to going to Toraja since we first arrived in Indonesia! In our last video we explored Makassar, the largest city in Sulawesi, before taking an overnight bus and arriving in Toraja at 5am the day of this video! The bus was surprisingly comfortable, but we didn't sleep too much as there was no bathroom on the bus so we were woken up frequently for the bus to stop.. sorry if we look extra tired 😅
Unfortunately our first two days in Toraja we didn't have a guide so it was just the two of us and a motorbike with some recommendations of where to go. On our first day we explored the north of Toraja (Toraja Utara). We started by having amazing Torajan coffee at a cute coffee shop in Rantepao! We then stopped by the post office as we had some things to mail. We couldn't believe how much was actually in Rantepao! There were hotels, banks, a post office, lots of stores....before we went to Toraja we expected it to be a lot more rural so that was really good to find out! We then continued driving to our first location. On the way we stopped by Objek Wisata Kalimbuang Bori. There was a sign in English at the beginning that explained a little about the area and the megalith stones that were there. It was so interesting to walk around even without knowing a lot of the history! We continued to drive to the Tinimbayo Viewpoint where we were able to see amazing views of rice terraces and grab a coffee. We then drove just a little farther to Batutumonga Viewpoint which had amazing views of all of Rantepao. As it was already getting late we didn't stay there long and continued on to the Lo'Ko Mata Stone Graveyard. Again it was super cool to see (especially because of the buffalo) but without a guide we didn't know anything. From there we went to our furthest stop - a viewpoint somewhere close to Lolai. On the way home we stopped by Pana. While we were there filming we thought it was the oldest stone baby grave.....turns out it's the oldest stone grave and also a baby grave (the baby graves are in trees, not stones)! We ended Day 1 here as we were so tired and getting cold!
Day 2 started with a tour of our homestay: Ne'Pakku Manja. It was the most adorable homestay in a great location about 10 minutes outside of Rantepao. It was only a few minutes from Ke'te Kesu - our first stop of Day 2 and a must see place in Toraja! Ke'te Kesu has lots of souvenir shops but also lots of different graves. At the end there is even a cave you can enter which we were lucky enough to have some local boys guide us inside! Next we went to Londa Caves which are must see burial caves in Toraja! After the caves we got lunch with a French couple at a roadside warung. Next we went to Lemo - an ancient stone grave with lots of Tau-Tau statues. Our final stop was the huge Jesus Christ statue in Toraja (Buntu Burake). It's one of the tallest Jesus statues in the world - even taller than Brazil's famous Christ the Redeemer! We had such an amazing time in Toraja even without a guide....but in the next video you'll see how much better it is to explore Toraja with a guide!

hallo apakah kalian berkeinginan mengunjungi MARATUA ISLAND KALIMANTAN TIMUR SURGA WISATA DISANA🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
Next Kalimantan borneo😊
Before go to the kalimantan you gotta go to the palu city in 2018 tsunami its hit palu city so you gotta go to the palu city
Indonesia is a paradise for tribes
Wonderful
Glad to see our young guy can speak english so good, i hope in the future when tourist go to Indonesia, they can speak with everyone so easily
Yes he was so nice!! And spoke great English 🥰
Indonesia has so many different cultures, local language, tradition, etc. When you guys were in Bali, actually there is also a village called Trunyan not so far from Kintamani - Lake Batur. Its the only village in Bali who are not Hindu but they have their believe similar than the Toraja, dead bodies are not buried but just on top of the soil till you can see the skulls and bones after a while, the same in Toraja where they put the coffin in a cave, after a while then you only see the skulls and bones. Normally in that particular cave, is like a family grave. Another thing you may notice, people in South Sulawesi and Toraja, they eat more buffalo meat rather than cow meat cos its more expensive and also not their habit.
Oh wow we didn’t know that about the village in Bali! It’s so interesting how the culture can be so different even on the same island! 😱❤️
@@NataliesPassportyes, in Trunyan Village they put the dead bodies under the trees named "Taru Menyan" (I bet the village name was taken from this tree) . It means the tree that emits fragrance.
And so, there is a miracle come from. Although the bodies were left in an open space, it didn’t emit a foul odor. Thanks to the existence of the Taru Menyan Tree, which is able to eliminate unpleasant odors.
Wow!!!
I just wanna say thanks to the teenagers who accompanied you entering the cave. Thanks for showing a good hospitality..
Those boys were so nice!!! 😍😍😍
I’m an Indonesian from another island (Borneo), so visiting the graveyards in Toraja was awkward for me because I felt seeing all these skulls and skeletons somehow felt taboo and disrespectful, but locals assured me that it was OK. It was an experience, and it made me think about how people from different cultures view death in different ways as well.
Bori Kalimbuang is reserved only for Torajan aristocrats so not everyone can have their funeral there. Water buffaloes are fine, I’d be scared of North American buffaloes though. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in the province of South Sulawesi!
@@bayulimitedid9130 bagaimana klau anda sendiri jadi Gubernur. apakah anda sanggup?

Happy traveling to wonderful Tanah Toraja, South Sulawesi💑! Gracias Natalie & Carles for the beautiful Vlog🎥 at the church with giant statue of Jesus💒!

Finalmente Natalie y Carles también llegó a Toraja. Me siento orgulloso si ambos pueden venir a Toraja. La mayoría de ellos son cristianos. Yo también soy cristiano.
Estamos muy feliz que al final llegamos! 🤗😍😍
1:27 😮 no wayyy, you guys went to my gramps coffeeshop, Kaana Toraya Coffee. They roast arabica and robusta beans, they also pack mixed of those two beans. By the way, the owner is my gramps cousin, Elifas Pongrekun. We proud to serve Torajan authentic coffee and thank you for visiting Toraja 😊.
Ahh so cool! I really wanted to video more in the coffee shop like with the waterwheel and stuff 😍 hopefully next time 🥰
Thanks for watching 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for sharing the video about Toraja, this reminds me when I lived in Makassar in 1982-84 and visited Toraja several times, your video is great, showing more places than I had ever visited.
Oh wow 😱 I bet Toraja was a lot less known back then! We’ll have another Toraja video out tomorrow with even more places (as we had a guide!) 😍❤️
Welcome In Toraja South Sulawesi 🇮🇩
🙏🙏🙏❤
Thank you ❤️
😱 we haven’t heard of that mountain before!
@@NataliesPassport"gunung nona" is basically a mountain that has slope that looks like vagina 😅
Born and raised in Indonesia, but I am of Batak tribe. I've heard this Toraja culture and views of death since I was young, and I used to think that it's such a weird culture. But then growing up and getting older, and losing all my maternal and paternal grandparents, I now appreciate their culture.
Losing someone you love is never an easy process, the shock and the transition from living with them to living without them, is just hard. In our Batak tribe, we just have funeral ceremony for 7 days, especially if the dead is considered as old old people. And yet for the Toraja people, they release their grieve in such a gentle way, that I cannot help it but feel a bit jealous.
Owww.... it's already August... Independence day in Indonesia is CRAZY~~~~......
Enjoy the experience... LOL... Can't wait for your videos then.
It’s true! The Torajan culture sound so strange at first, but after spending a couple days there we started to understand it a lot more! ❤️
@@NataliesPassport Are you still in Indonesia for the Independence Day celebration (Aug 17th)? Hope you get to see and join some of the traditional games and foods.
Indonesians are so friendly and helpful! 😍
There are a couple islands in the north of Sulawesi that we REALLY want to visit!!! Hopefully next year 😍
Tanah toraja sangat subur sekali.
Ini adalah 1 nikmat tersendiri.

You can see another unique burial in the village of Trunyan - Bali, where people who have died are only placed under a large tree and only covered with coconut leaves and their bodies don't smell at all during the decomposition process because the smell is absorbed by the big trees there, even before the smell around there is good even though there are many corpses.
😱 oh wow we’ve never heard of that before!
Maybe if you still have time, you can visit Rammang Rammang too (the lime stones view in the middle of rice terraces), Kakaban Island where you can swim with non-stingy jellyfish. Btw, you can join an adventure together with Sam Indowild and Kristian Hansen, they're there at the moment.
We’ll have a video from Rammang Rammang coming soon! 😍
@@NataliesPassport Nice ☺
The view is amazing, the culture is amazing, Natalie & Carles is also amazing ....😀
As far as I know Buffalo in Toraja, Batak culture etc. is the symbol of prosperity, richness, degree, high ranks... that's why they sacrifice buffalo or decorate house/cemetary with buffalo horn.
I will be waiting for your next video, keep it coming
Aww thank you 🥰🥰
This is Indonesia, many cultural tribes, each region of Pulow, different tribes, different customs, this is Indonesia

What an amazing exploration, many things that I have never seen before. Do you have plans to make some kind of documentary to capture your experience and share it with the world?
Aww no documentary yet, just our videos. But we’ll have another one from Toraja soon with so much more info&experiences! 😍
Toraja is one of the most amazing place l've ever been, as an Indonesian myself. Fun fact, at that graveyard, nobody are allowed to touch the skeletons except their families. Even if the family intended to move the remains to other spot, they have to throw a spiritual ceremony first. And toraja's burial ceremony is insanely extortionate (without disrespect of the culture), they need to sacrifice dozens or even hundreds of buffaloes, horses, pigs, etc, depends on their status in society. If you're a nobleman lineage, you have to sacrifice Tedong Bonga (Toraja's unique pink buffalo) that can costs up to a billion rupiah for each.
That's one of the reason they preserve the corpses of their beloved ones (with special concoction) for years at their homes, until their descendants have enough money to hold the funeral ceremony.
It is so amazing! 😍
Don't forget to visit Ollon Hill in Toraja, the scenery there is very beautiful
We’ll have to save that one for next time! ❤️
Perjalanan yg memanjakan mata 😍 tak sabar menunggu video kalian lagi 🤗🤗🤗
Thank you 🥰🥰

The island of Sulawesi hides various beauties and mysteries. Greetings culture 🙏
Sulawesi is a great place to travel if you like going to less touristy places 😍😍😍
We rarely seeing a youtuber goes to Toraja... sometimes they only travaling in Java, Bali and Lombok... If I may ask, where did You learn about Toraja?? did You guys know about it from the internet or from someone whose been there before??
We saw something about it I think on Netflix?! And we love traveling to places that aren’t as touristy, so we really wanted to go! 😍 we hope we can come back to Sulawesi soon because there is so much there that we still want to see!!!
Have a wonderful time in Toraja. Keep a great health and keep a great tour in Indonesia 🇮🇩 Cheers 🥂
Thank you ❤️❤️
5:11 i am pretty sure they provide a tour guide for this is one of international tourist destination. maybe the guide was on vacation or something 😂
there are many beautiful places like Bali where the majority of the population are non-Muslims such as Tana Toraja, Manado North of Sulawesi, Medan North Sumatra, Sumba & Flores NTT (Komodo island), Papua and many other places.
the Muslim population is indeed large, but the majority are concentrated on the island of Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan (Borneo)
26:53 i hope you paid for the tour 😊 he is obviously a local resident. Please support the local 🙏🏼
Ah yeah we didn’t see guides at the first place.. we actually didn’t see many guides waiting at locations in Sulawesi (just at the caves in Londa) and then you could get separate guides for a day. In our next video we spent 2 days with a guide and it was SO much better than running around on our own as they were able to tell us so much information about the culture and locations! 😍
And yes, of course we tipped the guide at Londa! He was so nice!!! ❤️
Wow ,have wonderful days in Indonesia and good luck ❤❤❤
Thank you 🥰
Awesome video,, I hope you can visit Papua someday, there you will see Papuans from Melanesian tribes and beautiful nature, you can go to Jayapura city, 3 hours flight from Makassar, have fun guys
We REALLY want to go there!!! Hopefully next year 😍🤞
Thank you

looks like you two are only afraid of heights not afraid of ghosts.
otherwise I might never be there. just seeing your video makes goosebumps especially coming to the location directly.
But thank you so much for making this video. so I know more about Toraja, which so far I only know in several history and culture lessons, at school.
always feel like traveling online, following your youtube channel.
Aww thanks so much 🥰🥰 honestly the first time we saw skulls (which you can see in this video) we were like 😱😱😱😱😱 but after 4 days in Toraja it seemed a lot more normal to see them 😅 the caves were a little spooky but I think that’s also because I don’t like caves very much (even without bones in them) 🤣❤️❤️
