Find the Empirical Formula Given Percents

  • If you're given the Percent Composition of a compound, you can find the Empirical Formula for it. I have the shortest method ever to do it, although it's not a "full solution" like your teacher probably asks for.
    1. Divide each % by the atomic mass of the element
    2. Divide each of THOSE answers by whatever's smallest
    3. Adjust these numbers into their lowest whole-number ratio.
    Check me out: www.chemistnate.com

because it's too big difference and you can multiply all the numbers, and that is easier and more accurate :)

I think I would've failed my chem test if I didn't find you. Plus the added size doesn't matter joke at the beginning killed me.

you're supposed to assume you have 100 g of each element. This allows you to say you have 48.38% = 48.38 g C, etc. Then divide these by the MW to get the # of moles of each. The rest of the steps are the same. Assuming you have 100 g just makes it easier for people like me (an engineering student) whose anal about units.
