    Hey Mike - Absolutely love the videos! I think a lot of us would love the business side of these videos - how much you buy and sell items for - a list of items you purchase - kind of like at @1:55 in this video. At least I would love something like this, just a thought :)

      I'm not sure when he added the list. But he does have an amazon list in the descriptions on several videos.

    I have a couple questions…. I just started my farm and love your videos btw! Anyways, I got the 1/30 sifter but the material that falls through is a light color and seems to have a lot of wheat bran powder in it. How can you tell if it’s frass or wheat bran or both? Yours looks much darker.
    Also, I want to feed my 10 chickens a couple days a week. How many beetles do you recommend that we have in the box at a time? I collected 82 pupae yesterday and 107 today.. None have transformed yet to beetles. I haven’t fed anything to the chickens yet cuz I want to establish the colony first... (my beetle box is 6x11” with 2-2.5 inches of substrate .. if that helps)

      Thanks for your comments! If you are using the 1/30th sifter, then what you are sifting is frass. Frass can be lighter in color (like sand). Mine looks darker because my mealworms eat a lot of carrots (which tends to make the frass darker). But 1/30th is the right strainer to use for collecting frass. As for how many beetles to have in your box, my suggestion would be to try and keep enough that your beetles appear active but not "frantic." (If you reach the point of overpopulation, you will understand what I mean about "frantic" - the beetles will be constantly on the move because there is not enough room for them to live comfortably). If you end up with too many beetles, I would suggest halving the population and starting a new box. Best of luck with your colony!

      @@TheRealRancherMike That makes sense. I noticed that it was darker since we started giving more carrots. Thanks for the advice, they do seem a little frantic so I think I will start harvesting more before they pupate to slow down the number of beetles. THANKS!

    Hello Mike,
    Really appreciate your videos - thanks a lot. I would have one question: You said, that you raise mealworms primarily for chicken feed. Have you any track record of how much the mealworms substitutes your normal feed? Thank you so much.

    • @TheRealRancherMike

      I don’t substitute mealworms for regular feed because the feed provides a balance diet. I use mealworms as a treat only. If you give your chickens too many mealworms, they can suffer due to the excess protein without sufficient carbohydrates. Like humans, t chickens need a balanced diet.

    Hiya, could you tell me why my beetle tray is infestated with little black flies? Only wheatbran, carrots and paper in there! How ever do I get rid of them and do they do any harm? Pupae and mealworm tray dont have any flies!

    • @TheRealRancherMike

      This has happened to me before as well. On my bins, even though I have mesh screens, the flies are attracted to the smell of the carrots and lay eggs on the screen. As the fly larvae develops, it drops through the mesh and infests the tray. I have thrown out the contents of my bins when that happens so that the flies don't propagate. My best advice is to move your mealworm colony and fumigate the room to get rid of the flies. Then, try and keep the area clean where you store your mealworm bins so the flies don't come back. Hope that helps!

    Can you be sure that the GP2-130 sieve doesn't let through eggs?

      This bin being sieved won’t have eggs as it is just worms and pupae.

    Can you tell me the exact size of each slot, I need it to see how this hardware would work for my superworms

    • @TheRealRancherMike
      @TheRealRancherMike  3 роки тому

      I don't know the exact size, but I don't think they will work for superworrms (as they are too big).
