well considering the guns work becuase the shadows think their real so they become real, i guess surounding them and shooting all at once will cause the shaodw to panick and not even think about how many bullets the guns would normally hold nor could they keep track of how many were fired thus making them hold more

I believe the hostage hold-ups become more common the harder the game mode you are playing, and only when they hit an ally's weakness. doesnt really happen that much to most people
In Palace 7 (to avoid spoilers for the rest of the people reading this, I remember where you're at being Palace 3) there are statues in certain areas that give off a glow. These statues turn the ENTIRE party into mice/rats (A sub-boss in Palace 4 can do the same thing, just one at a time) and you are unable to fight as a mouse/rat if you wind up touching a shadow in those areas, so you automatically run after the enemy shadows get a turn on your ass usually (Where being a mouse will pretty much reduce your defense to like half of what it usually is, not sure on specifics). That's where the animation plays (The palace drags on WAY too long, they could have dropped one of the targets needed to get to the treasure and it might have been a bit more bareable)
Eh. Better safe than sorry. I've been dickish about not doing spoilers and I'd RATHER not see someone post end-game spoilers in the comments again. Last time I saw that it was on a video still in the early parts of the game.

Quite frankly I've only seen a hostage situation twice in my entire playthrough, and as a result I've also never seen that.
