I love this scene because it tells you clearly the point this movie is trying to make. Your efforts to change the world do have an impact. Don't let anyone or even you dissuade yourself into thinking what you do doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, because it does!
Even if it doesn't matter in the grand schemes of things, so what ? If it matters to you, or matters on an interpersonal level to another human being, or a community of other human beings, then so be it. If it only matters in a personal or in a 'smaller scheme of things' way, it really doesn't matter, it doesn't make it any less impactful. Do what you're going to do regardless. Most of my actions day to day don't matter in the 'grand schemes of things', but I will continue to make a difference in my own way nonetheless.

So i am saying HE DIDN'T GET IT. because for me. EVERYthing and i mean EVERY.. small or big.. Everything that we do, we HAVE done, or we WILL do will eventually/someday/ somehow matter.. Have you heard of the butterfly effect? Everything is interconnected! Oh.. And yeah this is one of my favs of all time as well.. So pls stop hating on me because I'm just stating facts.. What breaks my heart is that the father of the abolistionist couple is so angry and full of hate, he comes back into a future life and ends up being thier exececutioner.
And yet, how are both their live‘s ends not simultaneous? Why would one ending be after the other, why would they not be at the same point in their story? If Cloud Atlas teaches anything, is that life is just an episode. And what would an episode be without peripeties? The real important factor is that with every life, with every episode, good grows further
But you have to think timeless, if that makes any sense. At the end of all of this, humanity survives and finds a new home and prevails. Just because of good will.
"I own my life to a self freed slave, and I cannot, in good conscious, participate in this kind of business any longer." I love how Jim Sturgess deliver that line.

"There is a natural order to this world and those who try to upend it don't fare well." -- This is never a good enough reason to not do what's right. This scene shows what we know about life: Through every struggle in history, every wrong cause by one people, there are those who sacrifice themselves so that our society falls on the right side of history.
True, but he is right. He was also right about the limitless ocean, proven and confirmed in the future scene where nothing much has changed except the times, and the same battles are still being fought. Just like in the real world.
Yes, and I believe that raising and slaughtering animals just so we can eat their body parts is biggest injustice normalized in our society. There are many parallels between slavery and how we have treated animals as inanimate objects, but one day people will wake up and those that do sooner will want people to be on the right side of history. Just as we would see slavery from a the slave's perspective instead of the wealthy slaver due to our compassion, we should also see animal "agriculture" from the victim's perspective. It may seem trivial, to choose veggie meat over pig meat, but it is all a drop in the ocean of change.
The movie is literally about doing the right thing. Correct me if I’m wrong. Doing the right thing even if it means so little at the time. Has a huge ripple effect.
Well yeah, and yes and no.. see, Adam and his wife Tilda may have been on the right side to fight for people cause people shouldn't be slaves. So they join the abolitionists.. and as we know slavery was abolished, they won.. But, as soon as he say there's an order to this world, it cuts to the revolution led by sonmi451 and sadly they lost, cause her dad in a distant future caused their death..
But also, they wom the revolution.. since the future dispora when sonmi451 was killed we can see that it affected the ecosystem which led to the future where zachery was and hugo weaving appeared as the devil again to represent his view of order in a chaotic world.. where Adam dies again.. but then again they win, since they move to another world, another galaxy it seemed like.. this movie changed my view of life lol
To be honest, I have never seen ANY film in my life that there are multi-racial actors/actresses acting different races from their own! Bravo! By the way, "What is any ocean but a multitude of drops?" is beautiful.
I'll be sure later. And I still think this is the most wonderful film ever. And one of the few made on a book that I loved that did not disappoint me. What is an ocean For the collection of drops.
Me too I think I still have a major crush on jim sturgis. I think I remember a couple of people.I don't know if they said it on here. But somewhere that were offended that an Asian woman was playing A.White woman or an asian man was playing a black man or a black man was playing an asian man. You know that was the Point. It was one way to illustrate The message that we are all the same. We all have the same bodily functions.Basically unless we have some kind Kind of medical condition that interferes but were basically the Same not the less. I remember a line from a movie and I can't remember the circumstances but somebody was wondering why somebody wasn't at a meeting or something and another person says even great men have to pee. That's a good thing to remember when you're sitting in front of your boss or some person in power who's giving you a lot of Nonsense about something. Just remember that person behind the desk also has to use the bathroom. Inside, we are all the same for the most part.We may have physical conditions or problems that are different than the next person's but basically were the same kind of animal. A little tiny chihuahua has the same basic makeup as the biggest Dog. People who are rich can also get sick and Have a headache and get A belly ache. We all feel pain and we all feel hurt. Some of us just deal with it.Better or deal with it silently.Or don't acknowledge it. I love this movie just as much almost as I love the book. Nobody is better than anybody else. We may have particular skills or ideas. Are hobbies or habits that differentiate?Yes but we're still the same. If you're scared of somebody in your Life remember that If they can't go to The bathroom they might become very ill or even die. You can be the most powerful person in the doesn't. Protect you from being sick or getting hurt are falling down a flight of stairs and breaking your ankle. Humans are pretty delicate overall. I often forget this. But even the people in my life who scare me or annoy me or pick on me.For any reason are just as vulnerable as I am
Watching this scene feels like the ethereal experience of the very soul of rebellion, the spirit of resistance, reaching out across time and space to always stand up against the “Natural Order”. Choral echoes in the soundtrack are very chilling in this regard, especially as they swell when we cut back to Sonmi with the narration.
His, and Hugh Grant's souls get progressively worse and worse in each timeline. From here he becomes a hitman, the horrible nurse, and then the executioner as you mentioned. By the next timeline he is so evil that he becomes a demon. Hugh Grant gets worse and worse until the final timeline where he literally consumes humans as a cannibal. It's a very interesting story.
All of Hugh Grant's characters were in positions where they could change things but consistently didn't Letting their base desires dictate their decisions. Weaving's characters were fixed evil. The final character is literally a figment of the collective's imagination's fear. The devil indeed is a lie.
@@SharinaJulien Yup, by the final cycle, all of the blood that Grant's characters have soaked themselves in sealed his fate. Just going by memory, so I'm sure I'm leaving things out, but when you combine the deaths caused as: - a slaver - a hitman - a member of the neo establishment That's a lot of human lives and suffering caused. Of course he'd be a cannibal in the end. Considering that the Kona had slaughtered their supply, they were headed for a bloody collapse.
@@bicarbonat1 Reading you're comment made me think of something else about both Hugh Grant's & Hugo Weavings' characters. Unlike the others both of their archs are linear. His 1st 3 characters do evil in servitude to others (the 3 you mentioned) The final 3 do evil for themselves, not answering to any authority. He starts as a servant and ends as a king. Thank you. I'm American too, and I keep hearing everyone say it's such a confusing film but it's really not. It's actually rather intricately simple, if that makes sense. I don't know. I didn't read the book, going to, but haven't yet, but I never found it confusing, just beautiful, a movie that defies genre, defies race and the physical body and pushes it all away to the core of what it means to be human, to be free. Unfortunately, most people are just exposed to the spoon fed mediocrity of celebrities' lives. This movie is thought-provoking and philosophical; one needs to have cognitive abilities and high intellect to be able to understand the complexity of such characters. It is a MASTERPIECE!!
This scene, as is the entire film, is a masterpiece of cinema. My absolute favourite, seemingly incidental moment is the irony of the use of the word “Crucifiction”. Used by Hugo Weaving as a threat but juxtaposed with Somni’s execution that will catalyse a rebellion that will immortalise her as a Goddess-like figure. Rebellion against the natural order can even go so far as to twist the fabric of language in its favour.
It's nice to here the film be appreciated the way it's meant to be. I remember a critic saying "you watch the same actors play different characters throughout different times" or something along those lines and I shook my head, no, you watched the actors play the same characters through out time, with different bodies. The characters aren't the people, they're the souls. But I also am familiar w/ reincarnation and believe in it so that may have made it easier for me to get it, like you said
There is also more to it than just having different lives. Its the development of a soul, the idea of respecting people because they may have been your friend before or the idea of fulfilling a debt from a previous life. Its very interesting and complex, I think the movie represented it well :)
Yes the debt is the contribution from previous chapters, set in the past, where actions for good or bad influence the current chapter, and the possibilities of the current and future chapters are made possible by, and their characters are inspired by the artifacts of the fictionalized past.
I am very glad that there are many people like you and me, in USA and here in Britain, who, appreciate art at its best. I still hope that the Academy Baftas and Oscars give the recognition that this masterpiece deserves. Am I deluded? The academy has become corrupt and disgraceful, considering the numbers of movies which have been ignored in the past few years- a disgrace!!
I know right?!? I hate that a lot of critics are saying that its "too confusing" or "it has no clear idea" I think that the big point is that its celebrating mankind and showing us making choices, loving each other and going through hardships; experiencing all of those themes through reincarnation. I loved this movie and I just wished that it got more recognition.
What’s cool here is that for lack of a better phase Hugo Weaving’s soul becomes a basically an evil spirit and loses all his humanity by the end. But yet his daughter the Doona Bae soul also loses her humanity but becomes a god and vessel for good in the world.
"Nothing in the world is the way it oughta be. It's harsh and cruel, but that's why there's us. Doesn't matter where we come from, what we've done or suffered, or even if we make a difference. We live as though the world were as it should be, to show it what it can be."
Listen to me, no matter who you are or what you have, you CAN make a difference. Be kind, always try to forgive, understand that people might think differently without demonizing them. Convincing someone isn't an ocean, you only need a drop.. Be well. I hope you all be well.
yeah it wasn't well received but has the making of a cult classic like bladerunner. I love how there are so many analysis and interpretation of the movie on youtube. This shows that the theme is deep and needs a lot of repeat viewings, and also a movie that won't be easily forgotten.
Actually I think Americans are in a great position to understand this movie: gay rights, the rights of minorities, feminism have been a part of social fabric of the country at least since I was a boy... 'times they are a 'changin. :)
Buddhism also believes in the karma's and also describes the different types of beings that you can come back as depending on how you do in this life. All of this leads to Nirvana. Buddha is also recognized in Hinduism because, Hindus, regard Buddha as a reincarnated form of Vishnu. So in some cases, both religions have some similarities in that regard.
Nobody notices the daughter was the somni and was sacrificed by the same character that played her father.....in the past he is explaining all that to her and he comes to see it play out in the future........deep ass movie
I think its a beautiful way to look at life. The growth of a soul, traveling though different time periods to perfect their souls and doing the right thing, in all lives. That's one of the big ideas its trying plug, and I think for some it may be hard to follow, if you haven't been exposed to it before.
Life tests you with another’s life everyday. I am amazed at how many good people there are in the world regardless of skin color. They have the choice of promotion and they pick people. I vote for anyone who consistently passes these tests. They lead by conscious not conformity.
This hits hard for me. It reminds me exactly of my selfish father who when I would do anything slightly different, adventures, or try to do anything on my own would get completely controlling and tell me about how staying in his house was the best path in life but it was only the worst
No that's not what I was referencing. Most Americans wont understand the concept of reincarnation, whereas over in areas in Asia it would make more sense. Now to the point where you are thinking that we are stereotyping religious people, I don't think that's what the point of this part was, the point was to go against the norm and do the right thing. Now for you to say that no evangelicals were for slavery is just silly, look at European history if you want an example.
Hi guys. I am late to the party’s, i watch cloud atlas For the first time, there are things I don’t understand.since you guys watch this movie many times. Would you answer my questions. It would be a great help on helping me appreciate the making of the movie 1. How does the music story impact the Halley Barry story? 2. How does the Halley Barry story impact the old man story? 3. In the Halley Barry story, why does Hugo weaving want to murder Halley Barry?
The story of Halley is important cause the book is reading on the train and inspires him to look for his liberty is the book that tells the story of Halley (the book was write by the kid who knows Halley and this is better explain on the book of cloud atlas)
Because it destroys the comfortable formulas that critics are used to. Its structure challenges and twists them--a kind of rebellion against another kind of "natural order", the "natural order" of Hollywood.
This movie is not perfect but it's good, and was unessecarily bashed by American critics. I think the main theme of the film is the nature of humans to strive for freedom.
I think she still looks Asian, not Irish/Scandinavian. When I first saw this movie, I didn't know who the actress was, but I thought her face looked really "off"and was very distracting. I could tell it was clearly done with makeup and not natural. She looked weird as a supposedly "Mexican" woman in the movie too. She looked like an older Korean lady with bad skin because of the patchy dark makeup and prosthetics. But I think the artists did their best since I don't think Doona's face is very versatile to work with as her features are very classically Asian. I think Zhou Xun's face is more versatile. She blended in. I thought she was a White lady who looked like an elf/fairy in her scene because she looked like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.
Belief, like fear or love, is a force to be understood as we understand the theory of relativity and principals of uncertainty. Phenomena that determine the course of our lives. Yesterday, my life was headed in one direction. Today, it is headed in another. Yesterday, I believe I would never have done what I did today. These forces that often remake time and space, that can shape and alter who we imagine ourselves to be, begin long before we are born and continue after we perish. Our lives and our choices, like quantum trajectories, are understood moment to moment. That each point of intersection, each encounter, suggest a new potential direction. Our lives are not our own. We are bound to others, past and present, and by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future.
I love this scene because it tells you clearly the point this movie is trying to make. Your efforts to change the world do have an impact. Don't let anyone or even you dissuade yourself into thinking what you do doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, because it does!

The characters aren't the people, they're the souls. But I also am familiar w/ reincarnation and believe in it so that may have made it easier for me to get it, like you said
"There is a natural order to this world and those who try to up-end; do not fair-well"; is a statement I will never forget.
Absolutely love this film!. :) Every time I watch it I love it a little more!
It’s been nine years since you made this point and it’s so spot on. How do you look upon the book and the movie nine years later?
We were taught and can be untaught hate!! We can love because love outlives death!!! Imagine if we saw beyond what we are in this world...
What’s cool here is that for lack of a better phase Hugo Weaving’s soul becomes a basically an evil spirit and loses all his humanity by the end. But yet his daughter the Doona Bae soul also loses her humanity but becomes a god and vessel for good in the world.
Oh, that's a nice easter egg. I hadn't made the connection between the four characters.
"Nothing in the world is the way it oughta be. It's harsh and cruel, but that's why there's us. Doesn't matter where we come from, what we've done or suffered, or even if we make a difference. We live as though the world were as it should be, to show it what it can be."
Best scene ever!!!
A master piece... from a fellow Nigerian
The beauty and fight for freedom so many need to watch
"what is an ocean but a multitude of drops?" epic line :)
Such an underrated movie easily in my top 10 of all time
This movie changed my life
Listen to me, no matter who you are or what you have, you CAN make a difference. Be kind, always try to forgive, understand that people might think differently without demonizing them. Convincing someone isn't an ocean, you only need a drop.. Be well. I hope you all be well.
2:39 The guy to the right of Hugo Weaving, is in fact David Mitchell, the writer of Cloud Atlas!
Nice!
i just notice that
One of my favorite scenes of the entire film.
An amazing movie, adapted from one hell of an amazing book!!!!
Just for this scene the whole movie was worth it
Movie is so underrated
yeah it wasn't well received but has the making of a cult classic like bladerunner. I love how there are so many analysis and interpretation of the movie on youtube. This shows that the theme is deep and needs a lot of repeat viewings, and also a movie that won't be easily forgotten.
"Deep shit"
You nailed it, that's the best description for this scene.
thank you so much for posting
I never even thought of that!!! Mind=blown
It's so powerful word for me
😭 One of my favorite movies in my collection. ☁️ atlas . Bravo 👏
I am OBSESSED with this movie! If there is a cult- I WANT IN
Actually I think Americans are in a great position to understand this movie: gay rights, the rights of minorities, feminism have been a part of social fabric of the country at least since I was a boy... 'times they are a 'changin. :)
love this upload description :D
Can't wait to see this. Good job!
*_Doctor: "Asian Hugo Weaving does not exist. He can not hurt you"_*
*_Me: _**_2:38_*
Doctor: 👁️👄👁️
Damn I'm crying again. This movie is the most perfect thing I have seen in my life.
2:24 Best Quate
Nobody notices the daughter was the somni and was sacrificed by the same character that played her father.....in the past he is explaining all that to her and he comes to see it play out in the future........deep ass movie
6 people support the continued hegemony of Unanimity.
Good thing there are 459 of us that have them outnumbered. Let's go Scots on their ass!
I think its a beautiful way to look at life. The growth of a soul, traveling though different time periods to perfect their souls and doing the right thing, in all lives. That's one of the big ideas its trying plug, and I think for some it may be hard to follow, if you haven't been exposed to it before.
The time it's going to tell the truth. This movie will be recognized
Really good points Ben. Especially about the "demon" part.
Such an underrated film.
What is an ocean but with a multitude of drops.
you should read the book, it is so good :)
"What is an ocean but a multitude of drops"
OMG it's the suit from the Matrix.... "MISTer Aaanderrsonn..."
It doesn't matter what we do with our lives, is what remains from us what really matter, in the grand scheme of all things...
You are not a drop in an ocean..
You are an ocean, in a drop [Rumi]
Deep shit indeed.
This is my favorite scene from the movie
This is a siren’s song.
BEST. MOVIE .EVER
“But what is an ocean, but a multitude of drops”
OP's username slightly relevant.
Your Madness
Look It’s Our Best Guess Yet
"There is a natural order to this world and those who try to upend it do not fair well"
So true
Very true. And yet still, the cause is worthy.
Greatest crime here is sitting through an advert
Life tests you with another’s life everyday. I am amazed at how many good people there are in the world regardless of skin color. They have the choice of promotion and they pick people. I vote for anyone who consistently passes these tests. They lead by conscious not conformity.
This hits hard for me.
It reminds me exactly of my selfish father who when I would do anything slightly different, adventures, or try to do anything on my own would get completely controlling and tell me about how staying in his house was the best path in life but it was only the worst
I hope you got out.And if you haven't yet then just keep your head down and stick to yourself until you can.Sending 🙏❤️❤️❤️
In fact, Solzhenitsyn wasn't alone in Vermont.
that song
No that's not what I was referencing. Most Americans wont understand the concept of reincarnation, whereas over in areas in Asia it would make more sense. Now to the point where you are thinking that we are stereotyping religious people, I don't think that's what the point of this part was, the point was to go against the norm and do the right thing. Now for you to say that no evangelicals were for slavery is just silly, look at European history if you want an example.
True-True
Hi guys. I am late to the party’s, i watch cloud atlas For the first time, there are things I don’t understand.since you guys watch this movie many times. Would you answer my questions. It would be a great help on helping me appreciate the making of the movie
1. How does the music story impact the Halley Barry story?
2. How does the Halley Barry story impact the old man story?
3. In the Halley Barry story, why does Hugo weaving want to murder Halley Barry?
I can explanada a few of those
@@ericgabrielbautistajaimes9187 pls
Hugo wants to kill Halley cause she works on a magazine and wants to publish the story about the fabric that wants to destroy a nuclear reactor
The story of Halley is important cause the book is reading on the train and inspires him to look for his liberty is the book that tells the story of Halley (the book was write by the kid who knows Halley and this is better explain on the book of cloud atlas)
R first question I have no answer
Totally agree with ya...I just wonder why it was bashed by a lot of american critics
Because it destroys the comfortable formulas that critics are used to. Its structure challenges and twists them--a kind of rebellion against another kind of "natural order", the "natural order" of Hollywood.
Here. Here.
Very nice movie 🤫❤️✌️⚔️
just watch that movie and even making film.
I forgot Hugh Grant worked with Tom Hanks.
What soundtrack is that? it's different from Sextet they have voice.
indeed
This movie is not perfect but it's good, and was unessecarily bashed by American critics. I think the main theme of the film is the nature of humans to strive for freedom.
1:28 And major massive props to the make up artist that made an Asian woman look Irish/Scandinavian.
Well put mauwarrior. Nice well put.
So This
Belief, like fear or love, is a force to be understood as we understand the theory of relativity and principals of uncertainty.
