- Welcome back to the channel!
In this video, I service out the MEP-003A diesel generator and do a spin-on oil filter conversion making it easier to service and easier/cheaper to get filters for.

Nice upgrade! Have a great weekend! 👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🙏
You do the same bud.
Another thing you want to keep an eye on is the dc regulator, they are know for having issues, and can either drain your batteries or overcharge them and make batteries pop tops. I worked on these generators in the Marine Corps, and i own one now, they are great generators and long lasting, very reliable, will produce up to 8k of power from tge mep002 and 13k of power out of the mep003 without missing a beat. I always suggest replacing the fuel filters with the napa spin on adapters, and the spin on adapter for the oil filter. Also the fuel pumps, make sure you have quality fuel pumps and not cheap chinese fuel pumps, ive changed many of the cheap chinese fuel pumls people put on these onky after 20 hrs of use. Great thing about these generators is you can connect a 55 gal barrel to it and run for days, i have mine set up with 2 barrels of 50% diesel and 50% waste motor oil, and have a t connecting them, because i live off grid and its setup to kick on when my batteries get low, using a auto gen start.
They really are solid units. I need to rebuild the injectors in mine as it struggles to pull past 8kw. Loads up and starts pulling RPM down. Governor is set properly from what I can tell so I assume it's injector related.. that or timing considering I had the injection pump off of it. Thanks for watching and thanks for the info!
@NotSoGrandGarage yeah probably from sitting, try running some cleaner threw it, run it for about an hour with 30% cleaner and should clear it out, if not wanting to pull the injectors. Good thing is those injectors are pretty simple, another thing to check and look at is the plunger in the center of the pump, pull that out an clean it. Also check the fuel pumps make sure that they are clean, pull apart and clean them, because it can run with crap in fuel pump, but will bog down at higher rpms if crap in them.
@@sethtaylorm925 I'll be checking a few things come spring. I cleaned the pumps when I got it running. The injection pump had seized and broke the plunger guide. I went through the pump but it's entirely possible I got something wrong or have the timing slightly off. This is me... www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/ambac-m-50-rebuild-w-pics-mep-003a.183913/
@NotSoGrandGarage looks like you got it correct, looked over all of it, and looks like other members have already spoke, steel soiders is great place to get info from all us vets, and has helped me many times with different equipment I have, also that was a great write up, appreciate that, and sharing your info. Great thing about these units, if dont have enough power you can always connect another one and get twice the power. I didn't know you could order parts from ambac for these units, I knew could for my m35a2 deuce, good to know. Thanks.
@@sethtaylorm925 Yup you can still get odds and ends from them... and they sell direct to the public which is huge. They are pretty knowledgeable as well... they had no issues finding the parts I needed and getting them to me.
you can tell that thing hasn't been ran much
Indeed. Should last a lifetime and then some as long as I keep it maintained.
Do you still have a good source for the oil spin on adapter? I can't even find the spin on filter "kit." Thanks! I have a multi-fuel M35A2. This old military stuff is where the expression "military grade" really means something!

They had them the last time I checked but they don't have o-rings for them. That's why they don't sell them currently. I just used a factory oil filter oring and it sealed up without issue.
@NotSoGrandGarage thank you! I'm seeing up my 003A for off grid and you have the most content! Also, think I saw a W114 mercedes by your shop?
@@TheDIYDrivewayMechanic Yes sir you did... used to daily it until the floor pans (and rear suspension mounts) disappeared. Its a 240d 4 speed. Engine and trans are good so I cant bring myself to scrap it.
@NotSoGrandGarage I get it we have a 60s fintail 200D and a w123 240D amazing cars! When you find another carcthat has a good shell but needs motor or Tran, juat swap that in it. Should also fit in a w123 with slight mods!
Hi.where can i get the adapter? Thanks

what's up with the frequency ? Looks way high should be *- 2 hz 60hz 1800 rpm
Gauge isn't accurate. It's 62hz no load on a kill-a-watt
Those gauges are junk, best to put a meter on and check, or set of digital gauges, most of the military equipment that's sold off to the civilian market are swap out with the equipment they are using, so for example, they will take a good gauge from a genset that they are phasing out, and swap with one they are keeping, keeping thier equipment in order and selling off used and abused equipment.
None of the voltage, hertz or Amp meters are consistent on either of my mep003a gensets.
I use a plug in Killwatt meter to monitor hertz and voltage.
is it running on wmo or normal diesel in the video?
Diesel. I need to service the injectors in it yet as it sat for a LONG time.
Do you plan on running black diesel on this genset?
@@SamSung-jn5fi if I ever need to.... absolutely.
@SamSung-jn5fi I have ran these gensets on as much as 80% waste oil mix with 20% diesel. They will eat it and love it, they run almost as good on it as my m35a2 deuce and half military truck, most older military equipment will run on waste motor oil 50/50.
