    Mark your UA-cam video is outstanding and extremely helpful!! Mark what are the big differences between a Fermont Generator and a DSR Generator? Is the DSR a lesser version or just a new model?

    On the civilian side of things people think mil-spec means it was engineered to the highest standards. In the Army we know that mil-spec means "Made by the lowest bidder."

    The real reason this gentleman changes his oil at 100 hour intervals is that he loves his engines, I'm the same, I might try to rationalise by saying to myself that it's good for the engine but the real reason is just that we love our engines!

    For those who do not need a full 15KW and want the smaller 5KW, the equivalent is often found surplus as used rental light tower inventory. Light towers are single phase which suits my needs better and are 120/240 volt with a 6KW generator. Most are listed as 6KW on an Izusu or Perkins 3 cylinder diesel. Most come equipped with no convenience outlet or a 15A outlet. Some come equipped with a 240V 30A outlet as an option. Often you can buy the option kit from the manufacture. I picked up a used rental Genie TML-4000n with just over 1100 hours and sun faded paint. Got it at auction for under $1000 recently serviced, full of fuel, and ready to use. Installed the option kit and use it for both emergencies and live events to power the sound stage. The tower is handy for the night before the event setup and after event teardown. During the event, turn off the 4KW of lights and power the event stage. As mentioned in the video, the 30 gallon fuel tank onboard will run for well over 60 hours for the event without a refueling. I don't even take a fuel can to events. Fill it at a gas station on the way home from an event and it is fueled ready for use.

      What type of speakers/sound equipment were you powering please ?

    • @isettech
      @isettech 3 роки тому +1

      @@dougnashz For stage monitors a set of 4 Macke SRM-450 powered speakers, for FOH set of 4 15 inch VM (Rental, not sure which) powered by 4 KSC 800 Watt amps, or a set of KLH EON-1500 speakers for smaller half field events. For down field coverage, 4 more Mackie SRM-450 powered speakers. Depending on the show, the desk was a Mackie VLZ 32/4 or a Berhinger 32 ch digital. Lighting was 6 LED par wash RGBW at 70 watts each. This was for fundraisers with live bands and canned music. Mics were mostly Shure SM58's, SM57s for instruments, and a 7 piece drum mike kit. To keep it neighborhood friendly at the school, it was not built out or run as a rock concert. Power monitor on the generator showed peaks to about 5KW for the louder bands. A Hawaiian band with mostly acoustic ran as little as 300 Watts of power consumption. Love the high efficiency LED lighting and class D amplifiers for running on a generator. They make less heat, use less power, and deliver more of the power.

    • @paulheywood5205
      @paulheywood5205 22 дні тому

      I have Mackie gear too! 450s, 1501s, 1530s and 1801s. Which series SRM450s do you have? Series 1 or 2 with the toroidal or series 3 with the switchmode power supply?

    • @isettech
      @isettech 22 дні тому

      @@paulheywood5205 Personally have the SRM450 V2, with the class D amp for the woofer and class AB for the tweeter. They at idle draw about 20 Watts each, and at moderately loud levels draw under 100 Watts, so a set of 4 floor monitors is less than a KW. Found this when I needed to do a Memorial Day event and due to the cemetary location, ran the entire event off of "Solar Generator" battery inverter units. Used Eco Power I River 2 series units of about 750 watt hours capacity. Ran the 2 hour vent no problems running 2 SRM 450 speakers as mains with 2 battery packs and one for the mixer.

    I would like to see and hear the explanation of hooking these gensets up in parallel for carrying heavier and/or highly variable loads, and what kind of combinations they can do, like _5 kW as the Master_ and _15 kW as the slave,_ if that configuration is possible. Maybe they all have to be the same kW, or even the same model? Also, how many can be run in parallel.

    This man is right, oil is cheap, people changing oil every 3000 miles for Diesels, will have a happier Diesel, people who change their oil every 6000 miles will have a happier petrol driven motor vehicle, people who change their oils on their motor bikes every 3000 miles will have a happier motor bike, if you had a Generator with Inverter, you would expect it to operate over the 24hr cycle to be no more then 1/2 gallon per hour, as a inverter gen set will only use 1/4 gallon of fuel per hour at 50% load, these army gen sets are cheap to buy but expensive to run, its a trade off, my suggestion is to do your maths, as for your needs it might be cheaper to but a Gen Set with Inverter.

    Can these be converted to 15w single phase 120/240 for home use? What is the max amps if they can be converted to 120/240?

      in 220/230 V 50Hz - we have in Germany/EU-Europe are 16-AMPERE = Housing,
      many Civ.-GenSets are equipped 380/400 Volts (most w/ 2-each-220-V + 1x-ea 380-V
      in small GenSet-moveable, gas by briggs+Stratton - o- Kohler, also diesel engines
      - actually in Markets/shops - you will find also China-GenS- with B+S and -or-Kohler engines
      - some peoples - take solar-panel - using as TV/Radio, or hand crafted Tools. with or w/o
      applicated wit battery (car) Also you can
      with a Transformer: reverse Volts : from 230-V - into= 120-V or from
      120-V -into = 230-V-, in our case - my mother brought with her - in the 60-ties
      a big Gen.-Motor Electric- freezer - 110-V, so with transformer fittett to-230-V;
      May I advise. Most important wll be: Electric-wire: -3-wires, consisting of:
      1=-0= irden / 2- Plus / 3/ -Minus - the wires are in different colors for applications
      and if you want 100% - sure especially in Bath/Sanitary - by an use a *FUSE-AUTOMAT*
      in Nano-Second, cutting - the Electric (for instance - your hair-fön falling in bath
      or lavatory = you passing - ... WITH them - NO - occurence..
      I hope be able to support you, otherwise sice 10-months I guess you found solutions,
      Best wishes from Germany,

    A very informative video, being ex military it brings back memories of my tour in Vietnam when back in base camp. What I would like to know is where to purchase on of these units? I live in Wisconsin close to Oshkosh where they have a military contractor building all sorts of thing!

    If you have any fitment issues with that big baldwin oil filter hitting the back of the governor, use the hmmwv oil filter off the 6.2 or 6.5. Same thread and fit but smaller and less of a pain to fit it in their. Spot on on the oil changes I had several on deployments with 20,000+ hours and still going.

    The recommendation is to run between 50 and 80% capacity. Otherwise diesel generators build up carbon in the cylinders and valves. Running close to 100% can burn off the carbon, thus reducing maintenance cost and cycles. Under-loading these monsters will always cause problems and run up operating cost per kilowatt.

      What if i wanted to use one with a net meter in a gridtie setup instead of solar panels? I would be running used veg oil or used engine oil thinned with used mineral spirit or "bad" gasoline. Would feeding the grid load the generator sufficiently to help it keep the carbon out?

      No EGR valves on these, therefore no carbon… oil sponges off the carbon from blow by, and it’s a very very small amount.
