    In this video we try an assortment of British vegan chocolate bars. Join us as we do a taste test of 4 different brands of popular vegan chocolate from the UK. We tried 7 different vegan chocolate bars from NOMO, Moo Free, Pip & Nut and vegan Kitkat. Not only is it surprising just how many dairy-free chocolate items the UK seems to have, we're shocked at how good some of these British vegan chocolates are.

    I'm vegan (my choice as a Buddhist) and a coeliac (gluten free) so nobody wants to take me out for a meal! 🙄🤣 Actually the 'free from' choices are very good at major supermarkets in the UK. There are fabulous artisan vegan chocolates in the UK as well as more mainstream ones like these. Sophia is absolutely cuteness overload and an utter natural on videos (which is not guaranteed with children). Her confidence (which comes from her parents) just shines out 🥰 She'll do brilliantly in Elementary School and would already have started Primary School (in reception) in the UK! (Look up "A day in the life of a Reception Child"). Steve and Lindsey - you're just such good fun!

      Shame on those refusing to go out with you. Plenty of places sever meals that are vegan and gluten free as well as regular meals. I’m lactose intolerant & mum mum is gluten intolerant. We go out to places fine. I must say yes there are some great vegan options in u, but personally I’m not a fan of all of them. I love vegan magnums but I’m not a fan of vegan Ben and jerrys. I love hotel chocolate, dirty cow chocolate, vegan Kit Kats but I’m not a fan of some of the other chocolate brands like nomo that advertise as vegan. I suppose it’s all a matter of taste. I also love vegan brands like coconut collaborative. People often seem to forget that many foods we actively consume a lot are naturally vegan like- Oreo’s, jammy dodgers, churros, chilli Doritos to name a few.

      @@EmilyCheetham No, honestly, I wasn't being serious! All my family are coeliacs (and my brother-in-law refers to us with caring humour as "The Mutants" - which is technically accurate(!) - it's down to faults in the HLA-DQ genes. I have a wonderful family and a few very close friends - yes they would take me out for a meal! 🥰 Finding restaurants which serve both gluten-free and lactose free food is not trivial in the UK but they do exist and for many of them it is a vegetarian/vegan option. My Mum and sister are lactose intolerant - I just choose to not make milk. Actually, it's down to 'least damage' being a Buddhist rather than being a vegan. I would eat meat or fish if absolutely necessary and offered (as to not do so might upset the person) but if you eat chez-moi it's always vegan meal! Of course anyone who knows me offers me vegan/gluten-free food anyway which is very kind. Unfortunately for me, being gluten-free is a medical necessity so I can't have many of the standard biscuits. Some of the 'free-from' biscuits are yummy though!

      @@RandyDarkshade2 I think the bread I make is tasty even though I say so myself!
      Jo’s Yummy Chickpea Bread
      As the second major ingredient is potato starch, I suppose it should be Chickpea and Potato bread but you can use any vegetable starch really. The idea came about after wanting an easy-to-make a vegan and gluten free bread-maker recipe which was so bomb proof even I could make it work! Many gluten free bread recipes use half a dozen hard-to-get or expensive flours to get the right consistency. I looked around for a suitable base and came up with gram (chickpea) flour. It is inexpensive, you can buy it at many supermarkets. I cobbled this recipe together from a dozen different recipes on the Internet and amazingly enough, it works perfectly!
      You will need:
      • A food processor/mixer with a pastry blade/bread hook.
      • Bread-maker set to the standard bread making programme.
      • Sieve to sieve the dry ingredients.
      • A large bowl to hold the flour and a small bowl (over ½ litre) to hold the flax mixture.
      • Scales to measure out the ingredients.
      • Measuring jug to measure out the water.
      • Two wooden spoons, a tablespoon and a teaspoon.
      • Balloon whisk to mix the flax mixture together.
      For the flax mixture:
      • 45gm Ground Flax Seeds.
      • 18gm Ground Psylium Husk.
      • 500ml water.
      For the flour mix:
      • 300gm Gram Flour (Chickpea Flour).
      • 150gm Potato Starch.
      • 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar.
      • 1½ teaspoons of salt.
      • 2 teaspoons of Xanthan Gum.
      Added later:
      • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.
      • 4 teaspoons (yes really!) of EasyBake bread yeast.
      Method:
      1. Measure out the flax seeds and psylium husk, sieving each one into the smaller bowl.
      2. Add the 500ml of water a little at a time, whisking constantly to reduce lumpiness until all the water has been added.
      3. Leave the mixture to one side to thicken. Ideally it should be left around 5-10 minutes to absorb completely.
      4. Measure out 300gm of gram flour and sieve it into the large bowl.
      5. Measure out 150gm of potato starch, sieving it as well and adding it to the large bowl.
      6. Add the sugar, salt, Xanthan gum.
      7. Do not be tempted to add the yeast at this stage as you will probably kill it off and your bread will not rise.
      8. Add the flour mixture to the food processor/mixer.
      9. Poke a little hole in the flour and add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, pouring it into the hole.
      10. Add the flax mixture on top of the flour and vegetable oil.
      11. Mix the ingredients together thoroughly using the pastry blade/hook - on my blender I run it on low for about 20-30 seconds.
      12. Add four teaspoons of yeast using a CLEAN teaspoon and mix again for 20-30 seconds.
      13. Now comes the ‘fun’ bit! The bread dough will be of a consistency somewhere between a thick cake batter and superglue!
      14. Transferring the bread dough over to the bread-maker is tricky to say the least - hence the suggestion of two wooden spoons - one spoon out the mixture and the second to scrape the dough off the first spoon! This part takes me a few minutes although maybe you’ll be much better at it than I am.
      15. Set the bread-maker to its standard programme which takes 3 hours 30 minutes on my bread-maker. At the end of that time you should have a fabulous loaf of bread.
      I am sure it would be perfectly possible to cover the bread to rise somewhere warm in a conventional bread tin for an hour or so and then to bake in a conventional oven for around 30-40 minutes at 200oC but I have never tried it myself. If you did that, I suspect you could halve the quantities of yeast.
      My intention was to create the easiest possible bread maker vegan and gluten free loaf and using a food processor and bread maker and it works for me. It’s really yummy too!
      Jo x

I received a Lactose free formula made from Goats milk and without the gut protecting good bacteria developed the intolerance. Pasteurisation destroys both good and bad bacteria. (edit for typo)

    I've been vegetarian since I was very young (was too squeamish to eat animals, now more ethics) and the worst country in Europe by fa for me to eat out is Spain, followed by France. Germany and Scandinavia are much better. Italy is quite good too.

    The pen pal idea is wonderful. I know that Sophia really wants to connect to children her own age and have friends to play with. This has been hinted at in several videos.
    If this happens, for her to practice her penmanship is something many of her generation will not learn, thus she'll have an advantage over many of her peers. Old school letters and cards beautifully handwritten is a dying art that is never redundant and has far more meaning than a text or email. Preach.🗣️
    As part of a recent Jimmy Kimmel monologue, young adults were asked how to write an envelope properly - they had no clue (including SPOILERS! 😯).

    The only difference I noticed is that in the United States of America you put the senders details in the top left corner (where we put the air mail sticker). Here in The Five (this side of the pond) we put those details on the back of the envelope or parcel.
    I hope Sophia gets granted her wish and is penpaling it up soon.🦋☀️🧡

      I had to look up cursive writing. Ah, Daddy (long since dead) left school at 15. No qualifications. Back in the day where it was far easier to get a job - he was made redundant in the morning, walked into a business, got a job that afternoon.😯 This was never the case for my older brother and I.
      Growing up, Daddy, every now and then, would write to whole English alphabet in one continuous joined up line; crossing the t and doting the i and j at the end. He had such pride in doing this. Now I know that it is called cursive writing. Thank you.
      Although, from the examples of cursive writing online, it lacks individuality, as you mentioned (a main reason it was stopped being taught) and looks an absolute bugger to read. Less cursive more cursing.🦋☀️🧡

Bitter and strangely claggy to the point of literally sticking to the roof of your mouth; my Taid (grandad) tried it once, and stated it was “like eating camel cack”. • @rubilister9780
      @rubilister9780 Місяць тому +4

      Yes. I’ve noticed this. Unfortunately “vegan” does not necessarily mean “free from” as there is always a possibility of cross production contamination.

    • @HillWalker-ws7tx
      @HillWalker-ws7tx Місяць тому +6

      Only if the factory handles milk products to make other things, if it's milk liquids it tends to not cross contaminate, if it's a milk powder it gets in everything, but they make no distinction on the packaging so it's a game of Russian roulette!!

    • @lynnejamieson2063
      @lynnejamieson2063 Місяць тому +6

      The ‘May contain x, y or z’ is to ensure that those on the strictest of diets are aware that they are made in a factory that handles those ingredients, that way if they are a strict vegan/vegetarian or have a severe allergy, they know there is a chance of cross contamination and have the chance to make an informed decision as to whether or not they feel they can risk it. It doesn’t mean that they’re lying about the ingredients. It means they are being transparent about possible risks.
      As a vegetarian of over thirty years who has a number of food intolerances, I personally find it very helpful and I’m glad that these disclosures are a requirement.

    • @sarahkelly473
      @sarahkelly473 Місяць тому +2

    Veganism, is far more common in the UK for those that prefer to eat zero animal products for ethical reasons rather than dietary.
    However some of the commercial labelling has gone a bit too far. Such as vegan carrots in supermarket.

    Please notice that all bitter/dark chocolate is vegan by definition, while all milk chocolate is usually not vegan (I am guessing they can make milk chocolate from "non dairy milk"). Feeding chocolate to a vegan is the easiest thing: a good bar of dark chocolate is all it takes.
    Also, generalised dairy allergies in adults are exceedingly rare. Children can have a temporary cows milk allergy, but that usually disappears with growth. Occasionally you find a cows milk allergy in adults too, which isn't much of a problem: these people must avoid all diary from cows' milk, but can have any kind of sheeps and goats milk. Lactose intolerance isn't an allergy, it's a naturally reduced lactase production. One in 10,000 people must avoid all dairy except Parmigiano Reggiano aged over 30 months and clarified butter/ghee. Most of us only need to be careful with the amounts of milk we have, or use lactose.free milk. Most other dairy products (cheeses, yogurts, etc.) are fine, although the most severe cases must pay attention with ricotta, ice cream, and some very young cheeses. The amount of milk I drink is limited to a splash in my morning coffee, but I safely eat decent amounts of cheese and yogurt.

      It’s not actually the case that “all dark chocolate is vegan by definition”. Many contain milk or milk proteins, and depending on what format the chocolate comes in, may also be coated in shellac (derived from beetles)… that’s before any inclusions are added to the mix! Ingredients should always be checked (not least because recipes change, and what was vegan six months ago might not be now) and not just assumed to be vegan friendly just because it’s dark chocolate.
