    As many commenters have noted, Tim's voice is a true bass. I have spoken at length with him twice after a concert, and it as though you are speaking with a 747 rumbling down the runway. His voice has that granite like quality from deep in his chest that comes from a true basso profundo. The other bass singers that are often mentioned can pitch notes very low, even lower than Tim. They simply can't hang with the man that defines bass, though. I don't know how they do it, as their speaking voice sounds no different than mine. Kudos to them for cracking the code on how to pitch low notes.
    However, and honestly, Tim's picture should be next to the phrase "bass vocalist" in every dictionary and online reference.

      Subharmonics, fire breathing, vocal fry, and ingressive phonation are how the baritones are reaching the lows. I don't consider any of those real bass voices.

    Wow, these are good! Thanks for doing them. I love the harmonies. Great singers with great arrangements. When the Lord comes and takes us to be with Him, "Won't it be wonderful there?" "Though the voice I have now is not worthy, what a wonderful gift I've in store, when he gives me a voice of perfection, and I'll sing, sing forever for my Lord."

    It is apparent you have never heard Tim Riley in person, or know nothing about him. Every note you hear, he hits squarely on the nose. He has one of the truly BASS voices in Gospel music. When you have been there, and are qualified to speak, then we will pay attention to your comments. He, does not need "enhancement" He is the real deal ! Vocally and Spiritually

    @lowluvver Thanks for the response tho. I actually agree that in most cases, really low notes aren't always practical. Tim hit an E1 at NQC 2009 with Eric Bennett on stage, but it sounded more like a mixed voice (i.e. some vocal fry, some full voice). It sounds rough for clear singers like Tim.
    For singers with more bass to their voice, these people can hit down to about D1 in full voice (or a few notes off the piano in JD's case), but lower than F1 almost starts to be too muddy in their case.

    Please understand that what you're hearing is something the uploader has enhanced the audio with. You wouldn't be hearing that if you were listening to the original mix put out by Gold City. I would know because I, too, own the cd's/albums that the uploader got this audio clips from. Listen to some other videos of Gold City with Tim Riley. You won't be let down.

  • @JulienNeel
    @JulienNeel 13 років тому

    @MrSoundman90 You can use any audio editing program with frequency filtering, like Audacity. You jut have to determine the frequency window of the pitches of the bass, roughly 60Hz ( = A1) to 120Hz ( = A2), and increase power on that particular frequency band. Since the bass is the only one producing sound in that frequency band, you'll boost the bass.

    @lowluvver Hey man, I actually saw Gold City yesterday and I asked Tim Riley afterwards when I met him. He said he doesn't do choir stuff, but he said probably around a Bb1 is the lowest he could project. He also said he wasn't sure about how audible it would be in a choir as he hasn't done choir before, but he sang a Bb1 for me comfortably at around conversation level, so I'm thinking his guess was correct.

    hugedell's likely spot on with the C2, some other Bass i think EB said somewhere that Tim didn't need to stand as close to the mic as he did,his voice was so powerful.I can vouch for that as he was standing behind me at the NQC(I didn't know he was there)when he spoke to someone in normal speaking voice and i nearly jumped out of my skin it was so loud,deep and powerful.

    According to a friend of mine who's heard Tim many times in concert, Tim doesn't need a mic. i think he could match any Russian bass easily.
    Rodney and Wes are great basses as well. its great to see Wes back with Acappella. Now lets just hope they feature him on a true deep bass lead.

    Go to the Singingnews UA-cam account of Tim doing a sound check,that's about as low as you'll hear him.He says he can make lower "noises" but in Tim's book that's all they are...he certainly isn't going to try that stuff on stage, leave that to Mike Holcombe and others. Btw bassmanadam, the bass enhancement works great,many thanks.

    @lowluvver Oh yeah I've actually seen that. He gets an F#1 in that clip. I was actually asking about how low he could get while still being able to project without a microphone (like a basso profundo). UA-camr hugedell told me he can likely project a C2 really well with no mic, and he could do okay projecting an A1 or B1 without a mic. Is this really where his limit is for singing loudly or can he do it lower?
    Also, would you happen to know how much, if any, bass boost they use on Tim's mic?

    @lowluvver Thanks for the info. I'm guessing he could still do the B or the A, maybe a G (just not as much as the C) decently loud (enough to be heard somewhat in a choir on a medium to loud part). Am I correct in assuming this?
    That's also cool he was at NQC. I'm gonna try and go see them when they come to California this May. Maybe I'll get a chance to hear his voice in person then.

    Don't know what to tell you. Its Tim's voice! Who else would it be! all I did was a bass boost in a music soft wear to bring out the low tones. If it sounds off pitch then I would say your not hearing it right. A bass boost is not going to sour a note if its on pitch without it. I just brought out the color of the note. To each there own is what I say. Some may like it, some may not.

  • @thebassmanadam
    @thebassmanadam  14 років тому

    @dddmauld
    I can understand why it sounds funny! Your use to hearing it a certain way then someone changes it. It sounded different to me at first after I did that but I liked it. I love the tone in a basses voice but I love the bass sound just as much. The idea was to bring out the bass because often time in a song with instruments its just the tone we hear. A-capella music allows us to hear the bass sound as well. Like I said, it appeals to some and not others. I like a bass's voice either way

    I saw your last post before you removed it and to be clear, I am not a music engineer but could do it if I wanted too. Give me 4 vocals and I will mix them just fine. Again, I did this on purpose to hear the bassy part. If you mixed any of those songs which I strongly doubt than you know the bass part lacks the bassy sound A-Capella music is known for. Look up the group Acappella and Vocal Union for proof.

    Well, it sounds kind of artificial to me. I understand what you're trying to do, I just think it takes away from Tim's voice. When you blast the bass part, it covers up the true tone of Tim's voice. I now understand that it is Tim's voice. You're just changing the "soundboard settings" of Tim's voice by turning up the bass knob that creates a sound that does not match the identity of Tim's voice.
    btw, I was wrong. It actually is on pitch, it just sounds funky in some places.

    @ChernobylMan- He's young, but Avi Kaplan of Pentatonix is pretty good. Lowest he's recorded is a G1 on their most recent album. You might want to check him out. Any of Barry Carl's old stuff would work too. He used to be the bass in Rockapella.

    • @russellbearbassman

      +goofius121 When Avi gets low he's not in full chest like Tim here. Avi has more of a hushed tone not unlike Tim (last name eludes me) of Home Free. They get low but with out a mike they can't project it as a full chest note can.

      Sounds fine in my low bass headphones , but nothing like Subs , use a good set of Speakers ,, Only something like a good Bose Center SUB or 12" woofer speakers or better can really recreate his true bass that you can feel , trust me,, I did it in my tall Pioneers from the 90s that i have , with dual 15"s in each and it shook stuff off my shelves,,LOL especially that last drop when he says OH YEAH,, and also the last note of this ,,

    I'm listening to this with good headphones and each time Tim starts singing low notes, I can hear that the audio is amplified significantly and that he's singing very close to the microphone (lots of popping). I kinda spoils it for me. I'm sure he has a super bass voice but pushing it this low (below low D) is too much for me if it requires electronic gimmickry to be heard.

    Lowest note?
    Eh who cares honestly.
    I Kilda deep rich bass that gives the tenors baritones and lead parts something to stand on.
    Summer was lower but he didn't give the group much to build on. Most of their songs don't even sound like anyone is singing bass.

    I'm not sure what you're doing to amplify the bass part in this video, but it doesn't sound good. It is often off pitch, which tells me it's not Tim's voice. It actually covers up Tim's voice, and takes away from the video. I would recommend taking that part off. Sorry if I sound rude, just trying to help.
