Hanfgurkenhasser . I always loved listening to JD sing. It didn't happen too often, but sometimes the crowds were relentless, wanting him to sing the lowest notes. He's made a few speakers squak. Lol..... He loved his fans! 💜
Excellent!!! However, I only hear 2 bass vocalists, Gary Evans & J. D. Sumner, go below the double low C barrier. J. D. Sumner hits what sounds like a triple low B flat for a minute/split second. So does Gary Evans. I sure wish that I could sing that low!!! To the Bassmanadam:A huge thanks for putting this compilation together & posting it!!! Great job!!!!!
@GamingDrummer89 Tim Riley actually seems to do an Eb1 here: watch?v=oDtQ3JYvk2A&feature=related The 2 octave slide he does from Eb3-Eb1 starts at about 3:12, but you can't really hear any of the tone on the notes below like D2 because the video was taken using a camera. But still, that'd be his lowest note to date. He told me the lowest he's ever gotten was Eb1 and that he doesn't fry, so this might have been the note he was talking about.
How loooooooooooooooooooooooow can you gooooooooooo...... incredible! It is like growling thunder in the mountains. Being a soprano myself, I am duly fascinated! :-)))
It's interesting to hear the different tones in each bass singers voice.They are all good but some stand out. Bill Lawrence, Tim Riley, and JD Sumner are my favorites. Tim has that perfect cut in a low note, and he can blend with any group. JD Sumner could make extremely low notes sound good, and he really is just a legend. Bill Lawrence is almost a mix of Tim and JD in a good way. He can hit those lows at least down to an Eb1, and he still has a thick fantastic tone. It's sad that JD is gone, and Tim and Bill don't sing that often anymore.
yeah i know the feeling. wait till you voice keeps getting lower and you feel yourself hit a B1, i love it when i find myself singing a lower note than normal.
@MrWonnabee There is a reason that JD Sumner is still the measuring stick by which all basses are compared too,even Tim Storms. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of Tim and featured him at decent length in my 19 minute bass singers video I just don't think he has anything on JD but that is just my opinion and since JD is dead we will never know for sure.
@Gandalf930 Also, JD in one breath did that 28 second slide down the scales then back up them. No way can you do that utilizing vocal fry no matter how good you are.
Lmao I completely forgot I posted this. I'm actually 21 and I sing bass in my choir. My legit lowest note is a C2-B2. With a cold I can sing an A1, but that's about it.
He probably can't quite go as low as Hester and Younce do here, but Jimmy Jones of the old Harmonizing Four was an astounding deep-bass singer. Do you have anythying on him?
I've only heard one person at 13 that could hit Richard's Eb1; my cousin. He's 17 now, and goes all the way to A0, the lowest piano key (maybe lower). The deepest bass I know. Never heard anyone else that can even fathom going that low (second lowest being a friend at school that goes to an F1, third being my 50yo dad at Ab1). I'm sadly stuck at C2 and feel puny next to these three, despite technically being a basso profundo at a fairly young age.
Matt M Actually, singing is the harmonic phonating of the vocal folds (hence why falsetto and whistle register count for some people), normal speech has irregular sound waves while singing has even paced, equalized sound waves. And he can sing a low E in full chest voice no problem, I've heard him do scales with his piano. He got to about F0 before his voice went into fry (yes, he went lower than the piano). It's crazy, and about a 1/100,000,000 chance. He's truly gifted. His upper range is pretty impressive for his lowness as well, managing to sustain an Eb4 in chest voice (his falsetto kinda sucks though, only gets to Bb4). Hear your C2 from 30m away? Damn impressive. I'm a lyrical bass, so my sound doesn't carry very far, though you can tell the tones I'm hitting are genuine. I'm curious, how does your upper range pan out? My chest range is C2 to A4 (I often switch between bass and tenor in my choir) and I have falsetto up to F6 (I can use whistle register well too, but I don't because high frequencies hurt my ears). How about you?
That's not completely true. When I was 13 my voice was actually lower than it is now. I could sing low C on command with no problem. In the morning or with a cold I could sing low G and A. Now, even with a cold I can barely get past low C
@musicmanJ92 Blessed Assurance is the song and its from the album Timeless Hymns and Classics Vol1 by Brian Free and Assurance. You can find it just about anywhere.
Just found a statemant of Storms: 1,5" vocal cord, at least 0.5 more tha usual. more importand is the hypermobility of his arytenoids, which allows him to configurate lower tension in relation to the pressure of air. BTT: also the surrounding mucosa and the resonating cavities are REALLY important for the outcome of a sound. To the numbers at all: there is a bit of range around every number, but anatomic "abnormalities" are pretty rare and the most singers don't reachdown to 40hz.
That is true, different countries different explanations, techniques and so on..I did find the info you provided to be very interesting and educating! I will correct one thing, Tom Stoms did indeed set a new record on April 3rd of this year and 0.189hz... He stated that he felt he could go lower because when he does vocal warm up exercises he goes as low as he can but can't hear a thing but knows he's producing sound because he can feel it!! That to me is just amazing!
I'm sorry but I've heard Tim Storms, and I heard him hit a low D in real voice, but still weak - When he goes down to C#, which is next half step down- He did hit the C# all the way down to A0-- BUT FROM C# TO A0, IT ALL SOUNDED LIKE VOCAL FRYE AND VERY WEAK. I CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE. A GOOD EXAMPLE IS--(A GUY HAS A NATURAL BREAK IN HIS CHEST TO HEAD VOICE, AND HEAD VOICE TO FALSETTO. WELL, IT IS THE SAME THING WHEN HE GOES DOWN THE SCALE INTO THE BASS REGISTER. HE STARTS WITH FALSETTO, THEN A NATURAL BREAK INTO HIS HEAD VOICE, THEN FROM HEAD VOICE ON DOWN TO CHEST VOICE W/ A BREAK--AND LASTLY FROM CHEST VOICE TO A "BASS FALSETTO"-(THERE IS ALSO A BREAK) U DON'T HEAR MANY SINGERS TALK ABOUT IT- BUT, FALSE SETTO BASS IS WHERE MOST MEN WHO SING BASS CAN GO ABOUT 3-4 HALF STEPS LOWER AFTER THEIR VOICE BREAKS FROM CHEST VOICE TO FALSETTO BASS - AND YES, AS THEY GO LOWER, THEY CAN HIT THE NOTES ON PITCH W/ OUT VOCAL FRYING- BUT, THEIR NOTES SOUND ABOUT 40%-70% SOFTER THAN THEIR FULL CHEST VOICE WOULD SOUND. AND WITHOUT A HOT MIC, THEY CAN,'T BE HEARD. ( THAT'S WHY ALL BASSES WANT A HOT MIC- CZ THEY CAN STAY ON PITCH IN BASS FALSETTO, BUT THEY LOSE OVER HALF THEIR VOLUME. OKAY, THEN ANYTHING AFTER THE LAST BASS FALSETTO NOTE IS IT. I DONT CARE IF THE MIC IS SO HOT ITS ON FIRE- HE WILL NOT GO ANY LOWER UNLESS, AND I MEAN UNLESS, LOL!!! UNLESS HE EITHER GOES INTO THE HORRIFIC SOUND CALLED VOCAL FRY,-- OR, HE DECIDES TO MASTERS THE SUB- HARMONIC BASS TONES-AND THE SUBHARMONIC VOICE SOUNDS LIKE U ARE COMBINING YOUR HEAD VOICE W/ YOUR FALSETTO BASS. SUPPORTED BY GOOD BREATHING, STRONG DIAPHRAGM, AND A LOT OF GOOD MONTHS AND EVEN Years of PRACTICE- ENOUGH practiceTO GET THE CRACKLING OUT OF YOUR FALSETTO BASS, JUST LIKE A BARITONE OR TENOR HAVE TO GET THE CRACKS OUT OF THEIR FALSETTO WHEN THEIR HEAD VOICE TOPS OUT. The SMOOTHER THE TRANSITION, THE MORE BREATH SUPPORT AND SINGING W/ THE DIAPHRAM, AND THE MORE U PRACTICE AN STRETCH YOUR VOCAL CHORDS W/ OUT BREAKING OR DAMAGING THEM- THEN THE STRONGER AND CLEARER A TENOR OR A BASS WILL SOUND WHEN THE TENORS GO UP THE SCALE FROM HEAD TO FALSETTO VOICE.-- AND THE SAME CONCEPT APPLIES TO THE BASS SINGER GOING LOWER FROM HIS HEAD VOICE TO HIS CHEST VOICE TO HIS FALSETTO VOICE BASS VOICE, THEN THE FALSETTO BASS TO THE SUB- HARMONIC BASS. WHICH WILL GET U 5 NOTES LOWER MAX. BUT BECUZ MOST BASS SINGERS HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THE SUB HARMONIC RANGE, AND DON'T KNOW HOW TO PRACTICE IT. THEY JUST GO TO THE GOOD OLE VOCAL FRYE!!! I HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT- UNTIL A GUY DID SOME TEACHING ON UTUBE ABOUT 6 YRS AGO. THEN SNOTHER DTSRTED 4 YESRS AGO. THEY DO A BETTER JOB OF EXPLAINING IT, BECUZ THEY ALSO DEMONSTRATE IT- AND HAVE MASTERED SINGING IN THAT RANGE. SOUNDS REAL, NO FAKE. ( NOW, KEN TURNER MASTERED THE SUB-HARMONIC REGISTER- WHICH IS REALLY JUST VOCAL FRY; COMBINED WITH HIS CHEST AN FALSETTO BASS VOICE, W/ GOOD BREATHING AND A STRONG DIAPHRAM--THAT SOUNDS ALMOST REAL-BUT NOT QUITE. I'VE BEEN SINGING BASS LONG ENOUGH TO KNOW WHEN SOMEBODY HAS ALMOST MASTERED IT, BUT NOT QUITE. MEANING. IT IS EITHER A HIT OR MISS FOR HIM. ( IT WILL ALLOW ANY BASS TO GO 5 NOTES LOWER AFTER HE BOTTOMS OUT WITH HIS BASS FALSETTO.) BUT IT TAKES PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!! CZ AFTER THE LOW G HE HITS IN FULL CHEST VOICE. TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE ON DOWN THE SCALE-- AND HAVE A FULL SOUND ON PITCH WITH NO CRACKING OR FUZZY SOUNDS-- AND TO DO IT RIGHT EVERY TIME WHERE IT SOUNDS GOOD, AND UFOOL 95% OF THE PEOPLE EACH TIME- U HAVE TO MASTER IT. ( KEN TURNERS SOUNDS GOOD- BUT HE BOTTOMS OUT AROUND G OR F# -- THEN SLIDES ON DOWN JUST ABOUT 4 MORE HALF STEPS TO HIT THE DOUBLE LOW C IN THE SONG-" "RAINBOW OF LOVE." USING HIS SUBHARMONIC TECHNIQUE. IN MY OPINION-- SO I GIVE THE MAN HIS PROPS- HE MASTERED THE SUBHARMOMIC REGISTER. I DAID ALL THAT TO SAY THIS, JD SUMNER SLIDES DOWN 3 HALF STEPS OFF THE PIANO ON UTUBE WITH NO VOCAL FRY PERIOD. AFTER HE HITS THE LAST NOTE ON THE PIANO, WHICH IS AN A- I GOT MY SCALE TUNER NOTE REGISTER OUT 3 TIMES, AND WITH ELVIS IN LIVE CONCERT GOES FROM THE A TO 3 MORE HALF STEPS DOWN PIANO TO HIT G#,G,,THEN F#. AND HE MIGHT Have used his falsetto bass just to hit last 3 notes half steps, BUT, I CAN HEAR HIM WITH ZN OLD MIC IN A 1976 CONCERT WITH ELVIS PRESSLEY. AND IN MY OPINION, IM NOT EVEN SURE HE USED HIS FALSETTO BASS FOR THE LAST NOTE, AND DEFINITELY NOT VOCAL FRY. BECUZ HE RETAINS 70% OF HIS FULL VOLUME- AND WHEN U GET THAT LOW- 3 HALF STEPS OFF THE Piano, your gonna sound softer. To me, if I can't hear Tim storms, and he doesn't register on my pitch scale measurer- then IT DON'T count. A0 is all I get. And in 1963 JD is in LI E concert WITH Blackwood brothers singing a bass solo part on the song - I think it's called I'm free, or it is the song on the SAME LOVE record on utube- And this is when JD was in his prime- HE WAS 38 OR 39, HIS VOICE WAS SO CLEAR, CRISP, STRONGER THAN IVE EVER HEARD JD 1ST TIME I HEARD THIS ALBUM. BUT THEY ARE LIVE WITH THE STATESMAN THERE ALSO, CZ WHILE HES SINGING HE CRACKS A JOKE WITH BIG CHEIF FROM STATESMAN QUARTET--AND A BABY STARTS CRYING- JD SAID BLESS ITS HEART- IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS SIGNATURE SONG- LOW BASS SOLO PART- HE DIDN'T BAT AN EYE THEN STARTED AROUND AN A1, AND SLID STRAIGHT DOWN TO A0- LAST NOTE ON THE PIANO, --AND THEN SLID BACK UP TO MAYBE A0 OR LOW C0, AND I THINK HE ENDED THE SONG ON ABOUT A LOW C OR D. AND HE HIT A SUSTAINED A0 WITH POWER AND HELD IT FOR 6 OR 7 SECONDS- LAST NOTE ON THE PIANO IN FULL VOICE. BUT HE WAS MUCH YOUNGER THEN. I MEASURED IT WITH MY PITCH METER TWICE, AND ALL 3 TIMES IT REGISTERED A0! THE CROWD WENT WILD!!! SO TO ME--HE'S STILL THE MAN, THOUGH HE PASSED AWAY IN 1997.- SO, IN MY OPINION W/ FACTS- HE IS STILL THE GREATEST LOWEST BASS SINGER EVER!!!! AN REMEMBER ALSO, JD NEVER GOT THE GUINNESS RECORD HITTING A DOUBLE LOW C- BUT SOMEBODY GAVE THE GUINESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS A RECORD WITH HIM HITTING A DOUBLE LOW C ON THE THE SONG HOW GREAT THOU ART I THINK.HE DIDN'T HAVE TO GO AN PERFORM FOR THE GUINESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORD. BUT IF HE CD HIT A DOUBLE LOW C IN HIS LATE 20S! AND THEN, HIT AN A0, THE VERY LAST NOTE ON THE PIANO AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 38 IN A LIVE CONCERT WITH THE BLACKWOOD BROTHERS QUARTET. AND THEN, AT THE ANCIENT OLD AGE OF JUST #52-- HE NAILED AN F#, 3 NOTES OFF THE PIANO IN AN ELVIS CONCERT IN 1976 DOING A SECULAR SONG, WITH A 70S MIC AN SOUND SYSTEM, AND DID IT ON THE SPOT IN FRONT OF 1000' S OF PEOPLE!!!( LOL!!!) WOW!!!! AMAZING!!! SO, DID THE KING OF THE BASS SINGERS BOTTOM OUT WITH AN F# SINGING FOR ELVIS P., THE KING OF ROCK AND ROLL??? WE WILL NEVER KNOW. BUT WE DO KNOW HE HIT AN F# THAT COULD BE HEARD 3 HALF STEPS OFF THE PIANO AND MEASURED TODAY. AND WE DO KNOW THAT EVERY DECADE, HIS VOICE SEEMED TO GET A LITTLE WEAKER- BUT AT THE SAME TIME A LITTLE LOWER. AND WE KNOW THAT HE LIVED TILL HE WAS 76, AND WAS SINGING CLOSE TO THE DAY HE DIED. AND WAS HITTING GS AN FS IN HIS SPEAKING VOICE. LOL!!!! AMAZING!!! SO, IF HE HAD BEEN MEASURED JUST ONE MORE TIME IN HIS 70S- INSTEAD OF AT #53( WHEN HE HIT THE F# W/ ELVIS THE KING OF ROCK AN ROLL) COULD HE HAVE GONE A LITTLE LOWER.23 YEARS LATER??? IN MY OPINION - YES!!! CZ MOST LOW BASS PROFUNDOS SINGERS JUST KEEP GETTING LOWER N LOWER EVERY 10 YEARS! SO MY ANSWER IS A DOUBLE YES!!! I THINK HE WOULD HAVE BOTTOMED OUT AT AN E BELOW THE A0 WITH NO VOCAL FRY!!! AND JD NEVER LET HIS AUDIENCE DOWN. I HEARD HIM LIVE WITH THE MASTERS 5 IN 1984 IN ATHENS GA, AND HE WAS AWESOME!!! NEVER HEARD ANYTHING THAT LOW IN MY LIFE! U THOUGHT, THIS DUDES GOTTA BE CHEATING. NO! HE WAS JUST THAT INCREDIBLE!!!!! EVEN LIVE!!!! AWESOME!!! JD IS STILL THE MAN!!! THE LEGEND!!!!
@dasenteney it sure is!!! JD Sumner was the master at it. Tim Riley can nail low notes without a slide as can Mike Holecomb. Most of the the low basses here didn't slide into their notes. Paul Kennemer didn't and his note was well into contra bass. Sliding is just more dramatic but no, they don't need to do it to achieve these low notes.
A fry pitched down to 7 hz isn't even a audible sound, it's known as infrasound. And btw, given the mucosal structure of your vocalcords, every frequenze lower than 54Hz is a fry, otherwise a hundred year of phoniatrics would be wrong, which is highly improbable. So it seems, you might have studies the music-components of bass, but not the physiological ones, which i did. And if I'm wrong, i would love to see a spectrogram of your 7Hz fry, alongside a FLAC file for the audiolab.
Low notes without Vocal fry are impossible people, the smooth ones are chest notes, which are a mix of a low note with other overtones to create a smooth sound. Any pitch that is tonally true in this sense will have so called "vocal fry" This is because the measure of Hz measures oscillations per minute and that is perceived "Vocal Fry" while in reality its simply them hitting the note without boatloads of overtones. The concept seems to be quite mispercieved across music in general and even on a wikipedia page or two. The only way wee can hear some of those super low notes are because we are hearing the oscillations which always seem to be percieved as "Vocal fry" Dont get me wrong, vocal fry does exist in low singers and the world, its just mispercieved that some people use it to hit low notes.
Jacob Halfman Not impossible, just check out the Russian Oktavists, the SING super low notes perfectly and powerfully WITHOUT all the technical enhancement or vocal fry. And they do so WITHOUT any microphones.
Way to start off the video with one of my favorites, Buddy Liles. I heard him live and he literally shook the place with his low notes! I don't think he gets the proper credit for his voice. I see a lot of these bass singer videos and this is the first one to have him that I've noticed. Thanks for bringing him out for everyone to hear!
All these basses are just amazing. It seems like a joke to someone reach so low notes like they do here. I can say that this is a gift of God and God's gift no one can take or change when used properly.
Vocal Fry is NOT cheating. It takes a lot of practice and breath control to pull it off well. It is also difficult to produce much volume singing fry. As Dylan would say "don't criticize what you don't understand".
You're right...this is cool when it comes through a set of descent stereo speakers. From time to time, I had a hard time believing these notes were really produced by humans! ha ha Cool post! Thank you for it!
@Gandalf930 I have never heard that a beard changes ones masculinity. JD Sumner looked like a bass in every sense of the word and all he had was a mustache. As said before, a beard doesn't change how their vocal cords are. Its tradition is Southern Gospel to be presented well by appearance and not look scruffy shall we say. They always dress nice , their hair is done nice and for the most part they don't have scruffy looking beards. Different cultures is the best way to put it I guess.
The only ones I'm skeptical of here are PDK's (of course you can't really hear pitch at a C0 other than overtones so it's almost impossible to tell if it's vocal fry or not) and Christian Davis' (I've heard that song quite a few times before and it always sounded too much like a croak or a burp to be anywhere near full voice). George Younce here sounded like he started off on fry but you can hear his full voice tone come in during the last half of the note
@BenBistro004 Bout time someone said that! I use it all the time and for those that think its not look it up on Wikipedia. Its been recently accepted as a legitimate part to ones range and singing just like falsetto has. Its an extension of ones natural range and some can do it musically. Well said sir!! I wish i knew it was frowned upon by so many unless those many are jealous?!
@zinpgh Well, I wouldn't quite classify it as 'cheating' since many of the Pros (the really really good ones) use Fry and they are able to control it very well. Most of the time you will never even notice they are using fry. But in most cases, as you said it is very difficult to sustain a fry note and changing pitch can be tough as well, but if you're a pro like the guys in this video, you can do it without too much of an issue.
zane7949 At least he uses his natural voice while singing, while everyone on this video uses a lot of fry in a melodic way. Not even JD Sumner is natural, every note of him is fry below F1. Also, lowest Avi note is a D1/Eb1, pretty near to guys like Davis, Adams or Lawrance, and surely lower than overrated ones like Younce, Riley and Dustin. The bad thing is, he doesn't sing too much with his bass register, he just does notes in the background.
@BenBistro004 Good points as well!! My normal range before I got sick back in the fall ended at F#1 but with fry I could sing it down to 7hz. I believe that song is on my page somewhere. Not too musical just doing it to do it. My most comfortable note to fry with sustainability and tone is C#1-D#1. I have practiced it for almost 20 years. any clips of you singing with fry?
"This is a compliation of Southern Gospel's lowest natural bass singers." Avi Kaplan is not southern gospel. Please stop asking why he's not on here...
@DJRanchIncorperated I heard Glenn in concert a few times as they perform here in MI right down the street from me every spring and if he uses vocal fry a lot which I have no problem because its just an extension of ones range like falsetto then he uses it like a true pro. He sounds awesome live!!! Its super tough sometimes to tell who is and isn't using it so I just take my best guess as someone who uses both types of singing.
+siloanos nos i know now what fry is... its just whats gonna happen when getting that low, its unavoidable but theres really nothing wrong with it, its actually how the soundwaves work at those frequencies. but it doesnt sound bad. it sounds equally as good when sang in a group (duet at least). in a group its hardly noticable
+Matthew Lynn yeah I know it's still good but ... if you say why tim didn't in here coz he can't sing like bass singer in here .. tim use his mic for his low note ...
Sorry, but nobody has that range. There are not even 10 octaves on a piano and I know a good bass can not sing like a soprano. Only 8 octaves on a piano, so you need to recheck your stats. Nobody can sing that many octaves. The lowest singer is J.D. Sumner. He's in the record books as the lowest recorded note.
pickin4you Actually search Tim Storms.He even said so himself.There is a lot of videos on him.He sings so low the naked human ear cannot hear it.I think YOU should check YOUR stats
MarioDoesMinecraft I have checked and rechecked. JD still holds the record. Anyone can sing into a microphone and force low note out, but JD Sumner actually recorded his on an album while singing a song. I looked up Tim, and its such a joke. His muoth was closed, so I do not see how they can count that as actually singing.. JD Sumners record was of him actually singing and recording a song for an album. Nobody has beat that record. Tim Storms so called record... everyone is doubting it. Guinness even said it was the lowest SOUND. He did not actually SING the note. JD could sing lower than anyone. I did my research, now time for you to double check yours. There is a video of Tim "HUMMING" the low "sound".
Ooh, I may have hit B0 and C1s once or twice but only with growls, these are the monsters that truly inspire me. I find low notes are a lot more thrilling, I know I just gotta hit those.
@MrKyledude18 Thank you very much for the compliment! I love singing and love putting those videos together and always make sure they are of the highest quality. being a low bass at 17 is always impressive and that means you have lots of years ahead of you where your voice will only get lower and better! Do you have any recordings posted of you singing? I am not too good with knowing what notes are what so how low is your lowest fry note. My comfortable lowest fry is D#1
What is it with the Avi lovers? He's good at what he does but he can't touch any on the list! Not only will he NEVER be among the true greats, but this video is clearly comprised of some of the LOWEST notes in bass singing. Way out of Avi's league and range.
+TheDwoods14 Because it's obvious. It's not like he's 15. I'm a singer. I was lead bass in high school and continue to play and sing music to this day. It's probably safe to say I can sing lower than at least 95% of the population. I can hit Avi's low notes. Trust me when I say he will never be labeled as one of the greats. Again, I take nothing away from him. I am a fan and he is very talented.
+Zackybin Gameplay Wow. You make it painstakingly obvious that it is you who knows nothing. I've seen the daft punk video and I just watched it again. There's not a single note of Avi's in that that video that I can't hit. I'm not bragging, just putting it into perspective. I suppose to the untrained ear, a deep note is a deep note. If you listen to Avi, then listen to the likes of J.D. Sumner, Tim Storms, or anyone in this video, and come to the conclusion that Avi can match their lower register, than your credibility via music/vocals are worthless.
Avi Kaplan is an amazing singer, yes. However, there's two reasons why he's not in this video. One: it very clearly states at the beginning of the video that this is a compilation of southern gospel singers. Avi is not one of those as it happens. And two: while Avi's a talented bass singer with a unique and recognizable voice, his vocal range is nowhere near low enough to be grouped in with this video. While there's no doubt he'll catch up in range as he gets older, at this point, he's still young and his voice isn't nearly as low as these men can stretch.
actually the reason he's not in this video was bc this video was made in 2011, they werent well known then if at all so naturally this guy went with more known singers bc he probably didnt know avi
I generally don't waste time with these "I'm 5 years old and can sing C0 so loud it breaks your windows" type comments. You see them everywhere on these sort of videos.
Holy crap y'all I'm 2 weeks old and can hit an Eb-5 comment if I should make a video. Jk but seriously we all know that none of u can hit the notes u say u can hit
You don't LISTEN to JD Sumner, you FEEL him.
Well said!!! The King of low bass singers!!!
@@backtothefathershouse6758 JD Sumner puts all these other bass singers to shame.
He sounds like a fucking aeroplne landing
If you listen to J D'S low notes they actually somewhat musical. He's able to hit those notes with much more authority than anyone else too.
@Mega1Happyman that’s because JD was the best!
JD Sumner has the longest vocal cord in medical history allegedly.
Would have loved to see him sing opera or classical music with the same resonance tho(without a mic). Nobody is lower than Mikhail Zlatopolsky in that regard.May both rest in peace.
@@baxtita Zlatopolsky is the king of basses.

Surprisingly, this video doesn't include PDK's C0 :(

hello thebassmanadam thanks for shareing some of my favorite southern gospel artists bass singers.
There is absolutely vocal fry in this video
Said in sarcasm?
No?
There's a lot of vocal fry, the bass boost covers a lot of it but some of it's still noticeable.
Oh, I read what you wrote as "There is absolutely NO vocal fry", my bad haha
do you even know how physics work ffs?
Excellent!!! However, I only hear 2 bass vocalists, Gary Evans & J. D. Sumner, go below the double low C barrier. J. D. Sumner hits what sounds like a triple low B flat for a minute/split second. So does Gary Evans. I sure wish that I could sing that low!!! To the Bassmanadam:A huge thanks for putting this compilation together & posting it!!! Great job!!!!!
Ronald Shank it’s a F0
Guys, these gentlemen ARE in fact singing, it's just that the lower you go, the slower your vocal cords vibrate.
@thebassmanadam I would have to agree with you there.....JD was the Man..I'm a big JD fan as well....Touche.
My Subwoofer activated during this. Impressive.

@GamingDrummer89 Tim Riley actually seems to do an Eb1 here: watch?v=oDtQ3JYvk2A&feature=related
The 2 octave slide he does from Eb3-Eb1 starts at about 3:12, but you can't really hear any of the tone on the notes below like D2 because the video was taken using a camera. But still, that'd be his lowest note to date. He told me the lowest he's ever gotten was Eb1 and that he doesn't fry, so this might have been the note he was talking about.
Where's the guy with creepy eyes singing about rainbows?
Ken Turner? I don't know, he's great.
lol i love this description :)
Look on here for The Crystal River Boys, singing the song "Rainbow of Love. That's where you'll hear some of the lowest Bass singing known to man!
Yes why he isn't here?
David Hester shook the windows! Dang! Then J.D. Sumner says, "O.K., not bad. Try THIS!"
jds low is in a class by itself,,,,,dang!!
How loooooooooooooooooooooooow can you gooooooooooo...... incredible! It is like growling thunder in the mountains. Being a soprano myself, I am duly fascinated! :-)))
Someone in the audience told J.D. Sumner, "You're breaking the speaker up." lol!
hetaes it was elvis
J.D. SUMMER BRAVO
I finally hit a C2 in practice today. Nothing to brag about compared to these monsters but I'm kinda pumped about it.
yeah i know the feeling. wait till you voice keeps getting lower and you feel yourself hit a B1, i love it when i find myself singing a lower note than normal.
***** do you mean B1 and D2? also, which note are you using for middle C.
***** sure.
@MrWonnabee
There is a reason that JD Sumner is still the measuring stick by which all basses are compared too,even Tim Storms. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of Tim and featured him at decent length in my 19 minute bass singers video I just don't think he has anything on JD but that is just my opinion and since JD is dead we will never know for sure.
jd Sumner r.i.p ol buddy, what a legend 👌👌
Jesus i wish i could hit that G0 J.D. Sumner hits
@@Vanerov one octave higher man its only E1
put this on a subwoofer 😂
JLy97 I've listened to JD on my subs. Pretty insane!
jajajajajajajaajaj kind of funny!
I have a Definitive Technology sub and i couldn't crank it up without breaking windows.
The J.D. one sounds like a airplane
I was about to write that when I decided to check the previous comments. You're totally right!
@Gandalf930
Also, JD in one breath did that 28 second slide down the scales then back up them. No way can you do that utilizing vocal fry no matter how good you are.
thebassmanadan 0:08 link ?
My lowest note is a C -1. I'm only 4 years old too!
+Wesley Hyzell what dont troll you are only 4 years old and you cant sing this frequency
+Bora SUT he's joking. Lol
Im 15 years old and i dont know can i sing this frequency
his lowest note is probably a c3 at best
Lmao I completely forgot I posted this. I'm actually 21 and I sing bass in my choir. My legit lowest note is a C2-B2. With a cold I can sing an A1, but that's about it.
He probably can't quite go as low as Hester and Younce do here, but Jimmy Jones of the old Harmonizing Four was an astounding deep-bass singer. Do you have anythying on him?
If you are 13 or 14...then you cannot hit these notes. Stop trolling these videos.
***** i can hit a g1 and im 14.
How about you?
i acually have a friend in my school jazz choir who can hit an f1 clear as day
That's not completely true. When I was 13 my voice was actually lower than it is now. I could sing low C on command with no problem. In the morning or with a cold I could sing low G and A. Now, even with a cold I can barely get past low C
@musicmanJ92
Blessed Assurance is the song and its from the album Timeless Hymns and Classics Vol1 by Brian Free and Assurance. You can find it just about anywhere.
Ol JD made my ears pop. Great compilation. Hester was amazing too.
J.D Sumner got this
Mark Francis Alcantara forever the best
And in 1963 JD is in LI E concert WITH Blackwood brothers singing a bass solo part on the song - I think it's called I'm free, or it is the song on the SAME LOVE record on utube- And this is when JD was in his prime- HE WAS 38 OR 39, HIS VOICE WAS SO CLEAR, CRISP, STRONGER THAN IVE EVER HEARD JD
1ST TIME I HEARD THIS ALBUM.
@dasenteney
it sure is!!!
This is a nice compilation. These guys are incredible singers.
JD still takes the blue ribbon!!!
I love hearing low notes... always gives me shivers
Gary Evans sounded like my dog grunting, or it sounded like my morning farts, idk which one
LMAO
+Gunter Penguin Or a high schooler poorly bottoming out a tuba.
J.D. Sumner is still the lowest for me.
So totally awesome. Its a wonder how can anyone get that low.
I disagree. If you hear JD sumners, his notes sound very clean compared to some of the others like Gene Mcdonald, where you can clearly hear the fry
That's just the timbre of his voice that is different from others.
Jacob Halfman Not impossible, just check out the Russian Oktavists, the SING super low notes perfectly and powerfully WITHOUT all the technical enhancement or vocal fry. And they do so WITHOUT any microphones.
As you go lower, notes just sound like the have vocal fry in them (in the contra octave lower than like E1)
Mike Holcomb is my match
Definitely vocal fry going on.
BassActionHero what is vocal fry
Well no wonder, given how fucking low they go.
Vocal fry is not a true voice.
Ok guys, do I need to google this for you?
none of it is vocal fry. vocal fry sounds very dry. hitting those notes with fry would sound like the predator.
Half of these singers voices don't match their faces! Guess that's what makes them so great!
My farts hit at least an f#1
LMAO
no joke I have heard some farts that had some bass to it. I said a small prayer for the person, and the janitor cuz I'm sure there wasn't much left.
ROFL! 😂😂😂
My farts rnt even heard just like Tim storms lowest note
All these basses are just amazing.
It seems like a joke to someone reach so low notes like they do here. I can say that this is a gift of God and God's gift no one can take or change when used properly.
With the exception of vocal fry, I can hit these notes. But, vocal fry is technically "cheating"
Vocal Fry is NOT cheating. It takes a lot of practice and breath control to pull it off well. It is also difficult to produce much volume singing fry. As Dylan would say "don't criticize what you don't understand".
Papa Joshua Not much. If you can Control it and sing with it with no cracking then I would consider it a part of your range.
I am a professional then because I’ve know how to fry loud since I was 5
You're right...this is cool when it comes through a set of descent stereo speakers. From time to time, I had a hard time believing these notes were really produced by humans! ha ha Cool post! Thank you for it!
Most of these guys do not look like they have deep voices lol.
Holy shit JD u shook my spine, that's crazy man "you're breaking the speakers up"😂😂
@Gandalf930
I have never heard that a beard changes ones masculinity.
Buddy Liles and J.D. Sumner' we're just the best.
@MrWonnabee
Furthermore, JD is by far the lowest in this clip!!
thebassmanadam Thanks Adam, JD will always be the lowest and the best.
George Younce here sounded like he started off on fry but you can hear his full voice tone come in during the last half of the note
jd is definetly the best!!!
@BenBistro004
Bout time someone said that!
Nik Val should be on here. Fantastic bass singer
as should be London parris
i heard nic val uses vocal fry
@@OutrageousGamingNes He is a natural bass. There are videos of him speaking and he speaks in the bass register, not the deepest, but its up there.
@@Vanerov perhaps so, yeah. can be difficult to judge
PLEASE TELL ME HOW CAN I REACH THIS LEVEL OF LOW NOTES ??????
now my brain won't stop vibrating :(
Great video and selection! Would like to have seen Todd Dunaway, Wes McKinzie, Tim Storms, and Rodney Britt. All amazing basses.
glenn dustin's impressed me the most
Along with J.D. Sumner's it sounded the most..."clean".
Holy cwap. I listened to the first guy in my earbuds and got a freakin headache for like five minutes and then got lightheaded...
it sounds like the earth is pooping
@zinpgh Well, I wouldn't quite classify it as 'cheating' since many of the Pros (the really really good ones) use Fry and they are able to control it very well. Most of the time you will never even notice they are using fry. But in most cases, as you said it is very difficult to sustain a fry note and changing pitch can be tough as well, but if you're a pro like the guys in this video, you can do it without too much of an issue.
WHAT ABOUT VLADIMIR MILLER!?!?!?
He doesn't sing Gospel.
Joseph Morinello good for him.
Thank god.
Vocal fry is a legitimate way to sing. Everyone needs to stop saying otherwise.
Where is Avi Kaplan, he is awesome! Look him up
music kittens He's not low enough to compare to these Beast, IMO.
He's more of a vocal bass, not a bass singer. I haven't heard him singing lyrics with his low range.
Yeah I've only really heard a fry F#1. The best without fry is G#1.
zane7949 At least he uses his natural voice while singing, while everyone on this video uses a lot of fry in a melodic way. Not even JD Sumner is natural, every note of him is fry below F1.
Also, lowest Avi note is a D1/Eb1, pretty near to guys like Davis, Adams or Lawrance, and surely lower than overrated ones like Younce, Riley and Dustin.
The bad thing is, he doesn't sing too much with his bass register, he just does notes in the background.
zane7949 The only times I've heard him like singing bass is in "Love again", "Daft punk" and maybe "Silent Night". The rest are background notes.
The lowest I've heard here is Bb0, lowest contrabassoon note and also 2nd lowest note on the piano (after A0). Wow!!
I prefer Glenn Miller and other oktavists like him
@BenBistro004
Good points as well!!
Tim Foust is lower than Avi
JD Summer rocks!
J.D. =boss
I love the fact that you've boosted the bass a little so the bass is even more immersive.
Uhm. These do have vocal fry. Js.
JD isn't using vocal fry, he doesn't know what vocal fry is.
@DJRanchIncorperated
I heard Glenn in concert a few times as they perform here in MI right down the street from me every spring and if he uses vocal fry a lot which I have no problem because its just an extension of ones range like falsetto then he uses it like a true pro. He sounds awesome live!!! Its super tough sometimes to tell who is and isn't using it so I just take my best guess as someone who uses both types of singing.
Jd got it
@Shmecklecka
Who is that? have never heard of him but will look him up for sure!
why is Tim Storms not in this???!!!! he holds Guinness world record lowest voice at a G(-7)
Cause that's useless fry.
+Triffton what do you mean by useless fry?
+Matthew Lynn just fry not chest voice like Jd.Sumner
+siloanos nos i know now what fry is... its just whats gonna happen when getting that low, its unavoidable but theres really nothing wrong with it, its actually how the soundwaves work at those frequencies. but it doesnt sound bad. it sounds equally as good when sang in a group (duet at least). in a group its hardly noticable
+Matthew Lynn yeah I know it's still good but ... if you say why tim didn't in here coz he can't sing like bass singer in here .. tim use his mic for his low note ...
Have you ever heard of Zdenko Burnać? He is singing in Croatian group Vokalisti Salone and is very low and powerful bass singer
Tim storms can hit low E.He has 10 octaves!
MarioDoesMinecraft
I have checked and rechecked.
No one can sing 10 octaves. where is this person who can sing 10 octaves? A piano doesn't even have 10 octaves. Do you even know what an octave is?
TruthSurge SEARCH TIM STORMS.HE CAN HIT IT
Ooh, I may have hit B0 and C1s once or twice but only with growls, these are the monsters that truly inspire me. I find low notes are a lot more thrilling, I know I just gotta hit those.
NO vocal fry? come on man, don't give me that crap.
JD is using full voice, he doesn't know what vocal fry is.
0:45 why can't I have that note?! ;-;
This video has so much Vocal Fry and Bass boost its pathetic. Maybe you should change the opening credits.
Dalton Watson doesn't change the pitch
Yeet Yoot also doesn't change the fact that the opening crawl says "absolutely no fry!"
Dalton, You can look up JD Sumner in the Guinness Book of World Records, and then retract your erroneous comment.
I know , people need to know their shit before they start talking shit . Lmao . Jd also , held the longest note in this video and the lowest .
And I didn't even know they had such a thing as bass boosting back in the 70s when the clip of jd was recorded . Haha
@MrKyledude18
Thank you very much for the compliment!
My comfortable lowest fry is D#1
where is avi kaplan
